¹The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

¹Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël,

¹משלי שלמה בן דוד מלך ישראל׃

²To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;

²Pour connaître la sagesse et l'instruction, Pour comprendre les paroles de l'intelligence;

²לדעת חכמה ומוסר להבין אמרי בינה׃

³To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;

³Pour recevoir des leçons de bon sens, De justice, d'équité et de droiture;

³לקחת מוסר השכל צדק ומשפט ומישרים׃

⁴To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:

⁴Pour donner aux simples du discernement, Au jeune homme de la connaissance et de la réflexion.

⁴לתת לפתאים ערמה לנער דעת ומזמה׃

⁵That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

⁵Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera son savoir, Et celui qui est intelligent acquerra de l'habileté,

⁵ישמע חכם ויוסף לקח ונבון תחבלות יקנה׃

⁶To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

⁶Pour saisir le sens d'un proverbe ou d'une énigme, Des paroles des sages et de leurs sentences.

⁶להבין משל ומליצה דברי חכמים וחידתם׃

⁷The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

⁷La crainte de l'Eternel est le commencement de la science; Les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l'instruction.

⁷יראת יהוה ראשית דעת חכמה ומוסר אוילים בזו׃

⁸My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

⁸Ecoute, mon fils, l'instruction de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère;

⁸שמע בני מוסר אביך ואל תטש תורת אמך׃

⁹For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

⁹Car c'est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, Et une parure pour ton cou.

⁹כי לוית חן הם לראשך וענקים לגרגרתיך׃

¹⁰My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not.

¹⁰Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, Ne te laisse pas gagner.

¹⁰בני אם יפתוך חטאים אל תבא׃

¹¹If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

¹¹S'ils disent: Viens avec nous! dressons des embûches, versons du sang, Tendons des pièges à celui qui se repose en vain sur son innocence,

¹¹אם יאמרו לכה אתנו נארבה לדם נצפנה לנקי חנם׃

¹²Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit;

¹²Engloutissons-les tout vifs, comme le séjour des morts, Et tout entiers, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse;

¹²נבלעם כשאול חיים ותמימים כיורדי בור׃

¹³We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil;

¹³Nous trouverons toute sorte de biens précieux, Nous remplirons de butin nos maisons;

¹³כל הון יקר נמצא נמלא בתינו שלל׃

¹⁴Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse:

¹⁴Tu auras ta part avec nous, Il n'y aura qu'une bourse pour nous tous!

¹⁴גורלך תפיל בתוכנו כיס אחד יהיה לכלנו׃

¹⁵My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path:

¹⁵Mon fils, ne te mets pas en chemin avec eux, Détourne ton pied de leur sentier;

¹⁵בני אל תלך בדרך אתם מנע רגלך מנתיבתם׃

¹⁶For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

¹⁶Car leurs pieds courent au mal, Et ils ont hâte de répandre le sang.

¹⁶כי רגליהם לרע ירוצו וימהרו לשפך דם׃

¹⁷For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird:

¹⁷Mais en vain jette-t-on le filet Devant les yeux de tout ce qui a des ailes;

¹⁷כי חנם מזרה הרשת בעיני כל בעל כנף׃

¹⁸And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives.

¹⁸Et eux, c'est contre leur propre sang qu'ils dressent des embûches, C'est à leur âme qu'ils tendent des pièges.

¹⁸והם לדמם יארבו יצפנו לנפשתם׃

¹⁹So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

¹⁹Ainsi arrive-t-il à tout homme avide de gain; La cupidité cause la perte de ceux qui s'y livrent.

¹⁹כן ארחות כל בצע בצע את נפש בעליו יקח׃

²⁰Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places;

²⁰La sagesse crie dans les rues, Elle élève sa voix dans les places:

²⁰חכמות בחוץ תרנה ברחבות תתן קולה׃

²¹She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words:

²¹Elle crie à l'entrée des lieux bruyants; Aux portes, dans la ville, elle fait entendre ses paroles:

²¹בראש המיות תקרא בפתחי שערים בעיר אמריה תאמר׃

²²How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

²²Jusqu'à quand, stupides, aimerez-vous la stupidité? Jusqu'à quand les moqueurs se plairont-ils à la moquerie, Et les insensés haïront-ils la science?

²²עד מתי פתים תאהבו פתי ולצים לצון חמדו להם וכסילים ישנאו דעת׃

²³Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you.

²³Tournez-vous pour écouter mes réprimandes! Voici, je répandrai sur vous mon esprit, Je vous ferai connaître mes paroles...

²³תשובו לתוכחתי הנה אביעה לכם רוחי אודיעה דברי אתכם׃

²⁴Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;

²⁴Puisque j'appelle et que vous résistez, Puisque j'étends ma main et que personne n'y prend garde,

²⁴יען קראתי ותמאנו נטיתי ידי ואין מקשיב׃

²⁵But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof:

²⁵Puisque vous rejetez tous mes conseils, Et que vous n'aimez pas mes réprimandes,

²⁵ותפרעו כל עצתי ותוכחתי לא אביתם׃

²⁶I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

²⁶Moi aussi, je rirai quand vous serez dans le malheur, Je me moquerai quand la terreur vous saisira,

²⁶גם אני באידכם אשחק אלעג בבא פחדכם׃

²⁷When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you.

²⁷Quand la terreur vous saisira comme une tempête, Et que le malheur vous enveloppera comme un tourbillon, Quand la détresse et l'angoisse fondront sur vous.

²⁷בבא כשאוה פחדכם ואידכם כסופה יאתה בבא עליכם צרה וצוקה׃

²⁸Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

²⁸Alors ils m'appelleront, et je ne répondrai pas; Ils me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas.

²⁸אז יקראנני ולא אענה ישחרנני ולא ימצאנני׃

²⁹For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah:

²⁹Parce qu'ils ont haï la science, Et qu'ils n'ont pas choisi la crainte de l'Eternel,

²⁹תחת כי שנאו דעת ויראת יהוה לא בחרו׃

³⁰They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof.

³⁰Parce qu'ils n'ont point aimé mes conseils, Et qu'ils ont dédaigné toutes mes réprimandes,

³⁰לא אבו לעצתי נאצו כל תוכחתי׃

³¹Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.

³¹Ils se nourriront du fruit de leur voie, Et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils,

³¹ויאכלו מפרי דרכם וממעצתיהם ישבעו׃

³²For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

³²Car la résistance des stupides les tue, Et la sécurité des insensés les perd;

³²כי משובת פתים תהרגם ושלות כסילים תאבדם׃

³³But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.

³³Mais celui qui m'écoute reposera avec assurance, Il vivra tranquille et sans craindre aucun mal.

³³ושמע לי ישכן בטח ושאנן מפחד רעה׃
