¹Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law: Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

¹Cantique d'Asaph. Mon peuple, écoute mes instructions! Prêtez l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche!

¹משכיל לאסף האזינה עמי תורתי הטו אזנכם לאמרי פי׃

²I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,

²J'ouvre la bouche par des sentences, Je publie la sagesse des temps anciens.

²אפתחה במשל פי אביעה חידות מני קדם׃

³Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.

³Ce que nous avons entendu, ce que nous savons, Ce que nos pères nous ont raconté,

³אשר שמענו ונדעם ואבותינו ספרו לנו׃

⁴We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah, And his strength, and his wondrous works that he hath done.

⁴Nous ne le cacherons point à leurs enfants; Nous dirons à la génération future les louanges de l'Eternel, Et sa puissance, et les prodiges qu'il a opérés.

⁴לא נכחד מבניהם לדור אחרון מספרים תהלות יהוה ועזוזו ונפלאותיו אשר עשה׃

⁵For he established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which he commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children;

⁵Il a établi un témoignage en Jacob, Il a mis une loi en Israël, Et il a ordonné à nos pères de l'enseigner à leurs enfants,

⁵ויקם עדות ביעקב ותורה שם בישראל אשר צוה את אבותינו להודיעם לבניהם׃

⁶That the generation to come might know [them], even the children that should be born; Who should arise and tell [them] to their children,

⁶Pour qu'elle fût connue de la génération future, Des enfants qui naîtraient, Et que, devenus grands, ils en parlassent à leurs enfants,

⁶למען ידעו דור אחרון בנים יולדו יקמו ויספרו לבניהם׃

⁷That they might set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep his commandments,

⁷Afin qu'ils missent en Dieu leur confiance, Qu'ils n'oubliassent pas les oeuvres de Dieu, Et qu'ils observassent ses commandements,

⁷וישימו באלהים כסלם ולא ישכחו מעללי אל ומצותיו ינצרו׃

⁸And might not be as their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that set not their heart aright, And whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

⁸Afin qu'ils ne fussent pas, comme leurs pères, Une race indocile et rebelle, Une race dont le coeur n'était pas ferme, Et dont l'esprit n'était pas fidèle à Dieu.

⁸ולא יהיו כאבותם דור סורר ומרה דור לא הכין לבו ולא נאמנה את אל רוחו׃

⁹The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, Turned back in the day of battle.

⁹Les fils d'Ephraïm, armés et tirant de l'arc, Tournèrent le dos le jour du combat.

⁹בני אפרים נושקי רומי קשת הפכו ביום קרב׃

¹⁰They kept not the covenant of God, And refused to walk in his law;

¹⁰Ils ne gardèrent point l'alliance de Dieu, Et ils refusèrent de marcher selon sa loi.

¹⁰לא שמרו ברית אלהים ובתורתו מאנו ללכת׃

¹¹And they forgat his doings, And his wondrous works that he had showed them.

¹¹Ils mirent en oubli ses oeuvres, Ses merveilles qu'il leur avait fait voir.

¹¹וישכחו עלילותיו ונפלאותיו אשר הראם׃

¹²Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

¹²Devant leurs pères il avait fait des prodiges, Au pays d'Egypte, dans les campagnes de Tsoan.

¹²נגד אבותם עשה פלא בארץ מצרים שדה צען׃

¹³He clave the sea, and caused them to pass through; And he made the waters to stand as a heap.

¹³Il fendit la mer et leur ouvrit un passage, Il fit dresser les eaux comme une muraille.

¹³בקע ים ויעבירם ויצב מים כמו נד׃

¹⁴In the day-time also he led them with a cloud, And all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁴Il les conduisit le jour par la nuée, Et toute la nuit par un feu éclatant.

¹⁴וינחם בענן יומם וכל הלילה באור אש׃

¹⁵He clave rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.

¹⁵Il fendit des rochers dans le désert, Et il donna à boire comme des flots abondants;

¹⁵יבקע צרים במדבר וישק כתהמות רבה׃

¹⁶He brought streams also out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers.

¹⁶Du rocher il fit jaillir des sources, Et couler des eaux comme des fleuves.

¹⁶ויוצא נוזלים מסלע ויורד כנהרות מים׃

¹⁷Yet went they on still to sin against him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

¹⁷Mais ils continuèrent à pécher contre lui, A se révolter contre le Très-Haut dans le désert.

¹⁷ויוסיפו עוד לחטא לו למרות עליון בציה׃

¹⁸And they tempted God in their heart By asking food according to their desire.

¹⁸Ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur coeur, En demandant de la nourriture selon leur désir.

¹⁸וינסו אל בלבבם לשאל אכל לנפשם׃

¹⁹Yea, they spake against God; They said, Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

¹⁹Ils parlèrent contre Dieu, Ils dirent: Dieu pourrait-il Dresser une table dans le désert?

¹⁹וידברו באלהים אמרו היוכל אל לערך שלחן במדבר׃

²⁰Behold, he smote the rock, so that waters gushed out, And streams overflowed; Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?

²⁰Voici, il a frappé le rocher, et des eaux ont coulé, Et des torrents se sont répandus; Pourra-t-il aussi donner du pain, Ou fournir de la viande à son peuple?

²⁰הן הכה צור ויזובו מים ונחלים ישטפו הגם לחם יוכל תת אם יכין שאר לעמו׃

²¹Therefore Jehovah heard, and was wroth; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also went up against Israel;

²¹L'Eternel entendit, et il fut irrité; Un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, Et la colère s'éleva contre Israël,

²¹לכן שמע יהוה ויתעבר ואש נשקה ביעקב וגם אף עלה בישראל׃

²²Because they believed not in God, And trusted not in his salvation.

²²Parce qu'ils ne crurent pas en Dieu, Parce qu'ils n'eurent pas confiance dans son secours.

²²כי לא האמינו באלהים ולא בטחו בישועתו׃

²³Yet he commanded the skies above, And opened the doors of heaven;

²³Il commanda aux nuages d'en haut, Et il ouvrit les portes des cieux;

²³ויצו שחקים ממעל ודלתי שמים פתח׃

²⁴And he rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them food from heaven.

²⁴Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour nourriture, Il leur donna le blé du ciel.

²⁴וימטר עליהם מן לאכל ודגן שמים נתן למו׃

²⁵Man did eat the bread of the mighty: He sent them food to the full.

²⁵Ils mangèrent tous le pain des grands, Il leur envoya de la nourriture à satiété.

²⁵לחם אבירים אכל איש צידה שלח להם לשבע׃

²⁶He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens; And by his power he guided the south wind.

²⁶Il fit souffler dans les cieux le vent d'orient, Et il amena par sa puissance le vent du midi;

²⁶יסע קדים בשמים וינהג בעזו תימן׃

²⁷He rained flesh also upon them as the dust, And winged birds as the sand of the seas:

²⁷Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la viande comme de la poussière, Et comme le sable des mers les oiseaux ailés;

²⁷וימטר עליהם כעפר שאר וכחול ימים עוף כנף׃

²⁸And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, Round about their habitations.

²⁸Il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, Tout autour de leurs demeures.

²⁸ויפל בקרב מחנהו סביב למשכנתיו׃

²⁹So they did eat, and were well filled; And he gave them their own desire.

²⁹Ils mangèrent et se rassasièrent abondamment: Dieu leur donna ce qu'ils avaient désiré.

²⁹ויאכלו וישבעו מאד ותאותם יבא להם׃

³⁰They were not estranged from that which they desired, Their food was yet in their mouths,

³⁰Ils n'avaient pas satisfait leur désir, Ils avaient encore leur nourriture dans la bouche,

³⁰לא זרו מתאותם עוד אכלם בפיהם׃

³¹When the anger of God went up against them, And slew of the fattest of them, And smote down the young men of Israel.

³¹Lorsque la colère de Dieu s'éleva contre eux; Il frappa de mort les plus vigoureux, Il abattit les jeunes hommes d'Israël.

³¹ואף אלהים עלה בהם ויהרג במשמניהם ובחורי ישראל הכריע׃

³²For all this they sinned still, And believed not in his wondrous works.

³²Malgré tout cela, ils continuèrent à pécher, Et ne crurent point à ses prodiges.

³²בכל זאת חטאו עוד ולא האמינו בנפלאותיו׃

³³Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, And their years in terror.

³³Il consuma leurs jours par la vanité, Et leurs années par une fin soudaine.

³³ויכל בהבל ימיהם ושנותם בבהלה׃

³⁴When he slew them, then they inquired after him; And they returned and sought God earnestly.

³⁴Quand il les frappait de mort, ils le cherchaient, Ils revenaient et se tournaient vers Dieu;

³⁴אם הרגם ודרשוהו ושבו ושחרו אל׃

³⁵And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their redeemer.

³⁵Ils se souvenaient que Dieu était leur rocher, Que le Dieu Très-Haut était leur libérateur.

³⁵ויזכרו כי אלהים צורם ואל עליון גאלם׃

³⁶But they flattered him with their mouth, And lied unto him with their tongue.

³⁶Mais ils le trompaient de la bouche, Et ils lui mentaient de la langue;

³⁶ויפתוהו בפיהם ובלשונם יכזבו לו׃

³⁷For their heart was not right with him, Neither were they faithful in his covenant.

³⁷Leur coeur n'était pas ferme envers lui, Et ils n'étaient pas fidèles à son alliance.

³⁷ולבם לא נכון עמו ולא נאמנו בבריתו׃

³⁸But he, being merciful, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: Yea, many a time turned he his anger away, And did not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸Toutefois, dans sa miséricorde, il pardonne l'iniquité et ne détruit pas; Il retient souvent sa colère et ne se livre pas à toute sa fureur.

³⁸והוא רחום יכפר עון ולא ישחית והרבה להשיב אפו ולא יעיר כל חמתו׃

³⁹And he remembered that they were but flesh, A wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

³⁹Il se souvint qu'ils n'étaient que chair, Un souffle qui s'en va et ne revient pas.

³⁹ויזכר כי בשר המה רוח הולך ולא ישוב׃

⁴⁰How oft did they rebel against him in the wilderness, And grieve him in the desert!

⁴⁰Que de fois ils se révoltèrent contre lui dans le désert! Que de fois ils l'irritèrent dans la solitude!

⁴⁰כמה ימרוהו במדבר יעציבוהו בישימון׃

⁴¹And they turned again and tempted God, And provoked the Holy One of Israel.

⁴¹Ils ne cessèrent de tenter Dieu, Et de provoquer le Saint d'Israël.

⁴¹וישובו וינסו אל וקדוש ישראל התוו׃

⁴²They remember not his hand, Nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;

⁴²Ils ne se souvinrent pas de sa puissance, Du jour où il les délivra de l'ennemi,

⁴²לא זכרו את ידו יום אשר פדם מני צר׃

⁴³How he set his signs in Egypt, And his wonders in the field of Zoan,

⁴³Des miracles qu'il accomplit en Egypte, Et de ses prodiges dans les campagnes de Tsoan.

⁴³אשר שם במצרים אתותיו ומופתיו בשדה צען׃

⁴⁴And turned their rivers into blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.

⁴⁴Il changea leurs fleuves en sang, Et ils ne purent en boire les eaux.

⁴⁴ויהפך לדם יאריהם ונזליהם בל ישתיון׃

⁴⁵He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; And frogs, which destroyed them.

⁴⁵Il envoya contre eux des mouches venimeuses qui les dévorèrent, Et des grenouilles qui les détruisirent.

⁴⁵ישלח בהם ערב ויאכלם וצפרדע ותשחיתם׃

⁴⁶He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, And their labor unto the locust.

⁴⁶Il livra leurs récoltes aux sauterelles, Le produit de leur travail aux sauterelles.

⁴⁶ויתן לחסיל יבולם ויגיעם לארבה׃

⁴⁷He destroyed their vines with hail, And their sycomore-trees with frost.

⁴⁷Il fit périr leurs vignes par la grêle, Et leurs sycomores par la gelée.

⁴⁷יהרג בברד גפנם ושקמותם בחנמל׃

⁴⁸He gave over their cattle also to the hail, And their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

⁴⁸Il abandonna leur bétail à la grêle, Et leurs troupeaux au feu du ciel.

⁴⁸ויסגר לברד בעירם ומקניהם לרשפים׃

⁴⁹He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, Wrath, and indignation, and trouble, A band of angels of evil.

⁴⁹Il lança contre eux son ardente colère, La fureur, la rage et la détresse, Une troupe de messagers de malheur.

⁴⁹ישלח בם חרון אפו עברה וזעם וצרה משלחת מלאכי רעים׃

⁵⁰He made a path for his anger; He spared not their soul from death, But gave their life over to the pestilence,

⁵⁰Il donna libre cours à sa colère, Il ne sauva pas leur âme de la mort, Il livra leur vie à la mortalité;

⁵⁰יפלס נתיב לאפו לא חשך ממות נפשם וחיתם לדבר הסגיר׃

⁵¹And smote all the first-born in Egypt, The chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.

⁵¹Il frappa tous les premiers-nés en Egypte, Les prémices de la force sous les tentes de Cham.

⁵¹ויך כל בכור במצרים ראשית אונים באהלי חם׃

⁵²But he led forth his own people like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

⁵²Il fit partir son peuple comme des brebis, Il les conduisit comme un troupeau dans le désert.

⁵²ויסע כצאן עמו וינהגם כעדר במדבר׃

⁵³And he led them safely, so that they feared not; But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

⁵³Il les dirigea sûrement, pour qu'ils fussent sans crainte, Et la mer couvrit leurs ennemis.

⁵³וינחם לבטח ולא פחדו ואת אויביהם כסה הים׃

⁵⁴And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, To this mountain, which his right hand had gotten.

⁵⁴Il les amena vers sa frontière sainte, Vers cette montagne que sa droite a acquise.

⁵⁴ויביאם אל גבול קדשו הר זה קנתה ימינו׃

⁵⁵He drove out the nations also before them, And allotted them for an inheritance by line, And made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

⁵⁵Il chassa devant eux les nations, Leur distribua le pays en héritage, Et fit habiter dans leurs tentes les tribus d'Israël.

⁵⁵ויגרש מפניהם גוים ויפילם בחבל נחלה וישכן באהליהם שבטי ישראל׃

⁵⁶Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, And kept not his testimonies;

⁵⁶Mais ils tentèrent le Dieu Très-Haut et se révoltèrent contre lui, Et ils n'observèrent point ses ordonnances.

⁵⁶וינסו וימרו את אלהים עליון ועדותיו לא שמרו׃

⁵⁷But turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers: They were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

⁵⁷Ils s'éloignèrent et furent infidèles, comme leurs pères, Ils tournèrent, comme un arc trompeur.

⁵⁷ויסגו ויבגדו כאבותם נהפכו כקשת רמיה׃

⁵⁸For they provoked him to anger with their high places, And moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁸Ils l'irritèrent par leurs hauts lieux, Et ils excitèrent sa jalousie par leurs idoles.

⁵⁸ויכעיסוהו בבמותם ובפסיליהם יקניאוהו׃

⁵⁹When God heard [this], he was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;

⁵⁹Dieu entendit, et il fut irrité; Il repoussa fortement Israël.

⁵⁹שמע אלהים ויתעבר וימאס מאד בישראל׃

⁶⁰So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent which he placed among men;

⁶⁰Il abandonna la demeure de Silo, La tente où il habitait parmi les hommes;

⁶⁰ויטש משכן שלו אהל שכן באדם׃

⁶¹And delivered his strength into captivity, And his glory into the adversary's hand.

⁶¹Il livra sa gloire à la captivité, Et sa majesté entre les mains de l'ennemi.

⁶¹ויתן לשבי עזו ותפארתו ביד צר׃

⁶²He gave his people over also unto the sword, And was wroth with his inheritance.

⁶²Il mit son peuple à la merci du glaive, Et il s'indigna contre son héritage.

⁶²ויסגר לחרב עמו ובנחלתו התעבר׃

⁶³Fire devoured their young men; And their virgins had no marriage-song.

⁶³Le feu dévora ses jeunes hommes, Et ses vierges ne furent pas célébrées;

⁶³בחוריו אכלה אש ובתולתיו לא הוללו׃

⁶⁴Their priests fell by the sword; And their widows made no lamentation.

⁶⁴Ses sacrificateurs tombèrent par l'épée, Et ses veuves ne pleurèrent pas.

⁶⁴כהניו בחרב נפלו ואלמנתיו לא תבכינה׃

⁶⁵Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, Like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

⁶⁵Le Seigneur s'éveilla comme celui qui a dormi, Comme un héros qu'a subjugué le vin.

⁶⁵ויקץ כישן אדני כגבור מתרונן מיין׃

⁶⁶And he smote his adversaries backward: He put them to a perpetual reproach.

⁶⁶Il frappa ses adversaires en fuite, Il les couvrit d'un opprobre éternel.

⁶⁶ויך צריו אחור חרפת עולם נתן למו׃

⁶⁷Moreover he refused the tent of Joseph, And chose not the tribe of Ephraim,

⁶⁷Cependant il rejeta la tente de Joseph, Et il ne choisit point la tribu d'Ephraïm;

⁶⁷וימאס באהל יוסף ובשבט אפרים לא בחר׃

⁶⁸But chose the tribe of Judah, The mount Zion which he loved.

⁶⁸Il préféra la tribu de Juda, La montagne de Sion qu'il aimait.

⁶⁸ויבחר את שבט יהודה את הר ציון אשר אהב׃

⁶⁹And he built his sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which he hath established for ever.

⁶⁹Et il bâtit son sanctuaire comme les lieux élevés, Comme la terre qu'il a fondée pour toujours.

⁶⁹ויבן כמו רמים מקדשו כארץ יסדה לעולם׃

⁷⁰He chose David also his servant, And took him from the sheepfolds:

⁷⁰Il choisit David, son serviteur, Et il le tira des bergeries;

⁷⁰ויבחר בדוד עבדו ויקחהו ממכלאת צאן׃

⁷¹From following the ewes that have their young he brought him, To be the shepherd of Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

⁷¹Il le prit derrière les brebis qui allaitent, Pour lui faire paître Jacob, son peuple, Et Israël, son héritage.

⁷¹מאחר עלות הביאו לרעות ביעקב עמו ובישראל נחלתו׃

⁷²So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

⁷²Et David les dirigea avec un coeur intègre, Et les conduisit avec des mains intelligentes.

⁷²וירעם כתם לבבו ובתבונות כפיו ינחם׃
