¹When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

¹এই প্রার্থনার পর যীশু তাঁর শিষ্যদের নিয়ে কিদ্রোণ উপত্যকার ওপারে চলে গেলেন৷ সেখানে একটি বাগান ছিল৷ যীশু তাঁর শিষ্যদের নিয়ে সেই বাগানের মধ্যে ঢুকলেন৷

²And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

²যীশু তাঁর শিষ্যদের নিয়ে প্রায়ই সেখানে আসতেন৷ এইজন্য যিহূদা সেই স্থানটি জানত৷ এই যিহূদা যীশুর সঙ্গে প্রতারণা করেছিল৷

³Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

³সে ফরীশীদের ও প্রধান যাজকদের কাছ থেকে একদল সৈনিক ও কিছু রক্ষী নিয়ে সেখানে এল৷ তাদের হাতে ছিল মশাল, লন্ঠন ও নানা অস্ত্র৷

⁴Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

⁴তখন যীশু, তাঁর প্রতি কি ঘটতে চলেছে সে সবই তাঁর জানা থাকার ফলে এগিয়ে গিয়ে বললেন, ‘তোমরা কাকে খুঁজছ?’

⁵They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

⁵তারা তাঁকে বলল, ‘নাসরতীয় যীশুকে৷’ যীশু বললেন, ‘আমিই তিনি৷’ য়ে যিহূদা যীশুর বিরুদ্ধে গিয়েছিল সেও তাদেরই সঙ্গে সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল৷

⁶As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

⁶তিনি যখন তাদের বললেন, ‘আমিই তিনি৷’ তখন তারা পিছু হটে গিয়ে মাটিতে পড়ে গেল৷

⁷Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

⁷তাই আবার একবার তিনি তাদের জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তোমরা কাকে খুঁজছ?’ তারা বলল, ‘নাসরতীয় যীশুকে৷’

⁸Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

⁸এর উত্তরে যীশু বললেন, ‘আমি তো তোমাদের আগেই বলেছি, ‘আমিই তিনি৷’ সুতরাং যদি তোমরা আমাকেই খুঁজছ, তাহলে এদের য়েতে দাও৷’

⁹That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

⁹এটা ঘটল যাতে তাঁর আগের বক্তব্য যথার্থ প্রতিপন্ন হয়, ‘তুমি আমায় যাদের দিয়েছ তাদের কাউকে আমি হারাই নি৷’

¹⁰Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

¹⁰তখন শিমোন পিতরের কাছে একটা তরোয়াল থাকায় তিনি সেটা টেনে বের করে মহাযাজকের চাকরকে আঘাত করে তার ডান কান কেটে ফেললেন৷ সেই চাকরের নাম মল্ক৷

¹¹Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

¹¹তখন যীশু পিতরকে বললেন, ‘তোমার তরোযাল খাপে ভরো, য়ে পানপাত্র পিতা আমায় দিয়েছেন, আমাকে তা পান করতেই হবে৷’

¹²Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

¹²এরপর সৈন্যরা ও তাদের সেনাপতি এবং ইহুদী রক্ষীরা যীশুকে গ্রেপ্তার করে বেঁধে প্রথমে হাননের কাছে নিয়ে গেল৷

¹³And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

¹³সেই বছর যিনি মহাযাজক ছিলেন৷ সেই কায়াফার শ্বশুর এই হানন৷

¹⁴Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

¹⁴এই কাযাফা ইহুদী নেতাদের পরামর্শ দিয়েছিলেন য়ে, জনস্বার্থে এক জনের মরণ হওযা ভালো৷

¹⁵And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

¹⁵শিমোন পিতর ও আর একজন শিষ্য যীশুর পেছনে পেছনে গেলেন৷ এই শিষ্যর সঙ্গে মহাযাজকের চেনা পরিচয় ছিল, তাই তিনি যীশুর সঙ্গে মহাযাজকের বাড়ির উঠোনে ঢুকলেন; কিন্তু পিতর ফটকের বাইরে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন৷

¹⁶But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

¹⁶তখন মহাযাজকের পরিচিত শিষ্য বাইরে এসে য়ে বালিকাটি ফটক পাহারায় ছিল তাকে বলে পিতরকে ভেতরে নিয়ে গেলেন৷

¹⁷Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

¹⁷তখন দ্বাররক্ষীরা পিতরকে বলল, ‘তুমিও সেই লোকটার শিষ্যদের মধ্যে একজন নও কি?’ পিতর বললেন, ‘না, আমি নই!’

¹⁸And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

¹⁸চাকররা ও মন্দিরের রক্ষীরা শীতের জন্য কাঠ কয়লার আগুন তৈরী করে তার চারপাশে দাঁড়িয়ে আগুন পোযাচ্ছিল৷ পিতরও তাদের সঙ্গে সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে আগুন পোযাচ্ছিলেন৷

¹⁹The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

¹⁹এরপর মহাযাজক যীশুকে তাঁর শিষ্যদের বিষয়ে ও তাঁর শিক্ষার বিষয়ে প্রশ্ন করতে লাগলেন৷

²⁰Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

²⁰যীশু এর উত্তরে তাঁকে বললেন, ‘আমি সর্বদাই সকলের কাছে প্রকাশ্যে কথা বলেছি৷ আমি মন্দিরের মধ্যে ও সমাজ-গৃহেতে য়েখানে ইহুদীরা একসঙ্গে সমবেত হয় সেখানে সব সময় শিক্ষা দিয়েছি৷ আর আমি কখনও কোন কিছু গোপনে বলিনি৷

²¹Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

²¹তোমরা আমায় কেন সে বিষয়ে প্রশ্ন করছ? যাঁরা আমার কথা শুনেছে তাদেরই জিজ্ঞেস কর আমি তাদের কি বলেছি৷ আমি কি বলেছি তারা নিশ্চয়ই জানবে!’

²²And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

²²তিনি যখন একথা বলছেন, তখন সেই মন্দির রক্ষীবাহিনীর একজন য়ে সেখানে দাঁড়িয়েছিল সে যীশুকে এক চড় মেরে বলল, ‘তোর কি সাহস, তুই মহাযাজককে এরকম জবাব দিলি!’

²³Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

²³এর উত্তরে যীশু তাকে বললেন, ‘আমি যদি অন্যায় কিছু বলে থাকি, তবে সকলকে বল কি অন্যায় বলেছি; কিন্তু আমি যদি সত্যি কথা বলে থাকি তাহলে তোমরা আমায় মারছ কেন?’

²⁴Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

²⁴এরপর হানন, যীশুকে মহাযাজক কায়াফার কাছে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন৷ যীশু তখনও বাঁধা অবস্থায় ছিলেন৷

²⁵And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

²⁵এদিকে শিমোন পিতর সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে আগুন পোযাচ্ছিলেন, লোকেরা তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেস করল, ‘তুমিও কি ওর শিষ্যদের মধ্যে একজন?’ কিন্তু তিনি একথা অস্বীকার করে বললেন, ‘না, আমি নই৷’

²⁶One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

²⁶মহাযাজকের একজন চাকর, পিতর যার কান কেটে ফেলেছিলেন তার এক আত্মীয় বলল, ‘আমি ওর সঙ্গে তোমাকে সেই বাগানের মধ্যে দেখেছি, ঠিক বলেছি না?’

²⁷Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

²⁷তখন পিতর আবার একবার অস্বীকার করলেন; আর তখনই মোরগ ডেকে উঠল৷

²⁸Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

²⁸এরপর তারা যীশুকে কায়াফার বাড়ি থেকে রাজ্যপালের প্রাসাদে নিয়ে গেল৷ তখন ভোর হয়ে গিয়েছিল৷ তারা নিজেরা রাজ্যপালের প্রাসাদের ভেতরে য়েতে চাইল না, পাছে অশুচি হয়ে পড়ে, কারণ তারা নিস্তারপর্বের ভোজ খেতে চাইছিল৷

²⁹Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

²⁹তারপর রাজ্যপাল পীলাত তাদের সামনে বেরিয়ে এসে বললেন, ‘তোমরা এই লোকটার বিরুদ্ধে কি অভিযোগ এনেছ?’

³⁰They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

³⁰এর উত্তরে তারা পীলাতকে বলল, ‘এই লোক যদি দোষী না হত, তাহলে আমরা তোমার হাতে একে তুলে দিতাম না৷’

³¹Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

³¹তখন পীলাত তাদের বললেন, ‘একে নিয়ে যাও এবং তোমাদের বিধি-ব্যবস্থা অনুসারে এর বিচার কর৷’ ইহুদীর তাকে বলল, ‘আমরা কাউকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিতে পারি না৷’

³²That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

³²কিভাবে তাঁর মৃত্যু হবে সে বিষয়ে যীশু যা ইঙ্গিত করেছিলেন তা পূরণ করতেই এই ঘটনাগুলি ঘটল৷

³³Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

³³তখন পীলাত আবার প্রাসাদের মধ্যে গিয়ে যীশুকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তুমি কি ইহুদীদের রাজা?’

³⁴Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

³⁴যীশু বললেন, ‘তুমি কি নিজে থেকে একথা বলছ, অথবা অন্য কেউ আমার বিষয়ে তোমাকে বলেছে?’

³⁵Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

³⁵পীলাত বললেন, ‘আমি কি ইহুদী? তোমার নিজের লোকেরা ও প্রধান যাজকেরা তোমাকে আমার হাতে সঁপে দিয়েছে৷ তুমি কি করেছ?’

³⁶Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

³⁶যীশু বললেন, ‘আমার রাজ্য এই জগতের নয়৷ যদি আমার রাজ্য এই জগতের হত তাহলে আমার লোকেরা ইহুদীদের হাত থেকে আমাকে রক্ষা করার জন্য লড়াই করত; কিন্তু না, আমার রাজ্য এখানকার নয়৷’

³⁷Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

³⁷তখন পীলাত তাঁকে বললেন, ‘তাহলে তুমি একজন রাজা?’ যীশু এর উত্তরে বললেন, ‘আপনি বলছেন য়ে আমি রাজা৷ আমি এই জন্যই জন্মেছিলাম, আর এই উদ্দেশ্যেই আমি জগতে এসেছি, য়েন সত্যের পক্ষে সাক্ষ্য দিই৷ য়ে কেউ সত্যের পক্ষে আছে, সে আমার কথা শোনে৷’

³⁸Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

³⁸পীলাত তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘সত্য কি?’ এই কথা জিজ্ঞেস করে তিনি পুনরায় ইহুদীদের কাছে গেলেন, আর তাদের বললেন, ‘আমি তো এই লোকটির মধ্যে কোন দোষ দেখতে পাচ্ছি না?’

³⁹But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

³⁹কিন্তু তোমাদের এমন এক রীতি আছে, সেই অনুসারে নিস্তারপর্বের সময়ে একজন বন্দীকে মুক্তি দিয়ে থাকি৷ বেশ তোমাদের কি ইচ্ছা, আমি তোমাদের জন্য ‘ইহুদীদের রাজাকে’ ছেড়ে দেব?’

⁴⁰Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

⁴⁰তারা আবার চিত্‌কার করে বলল, ‘একে নয়! বারাব্বাকে!’ এই বারাব্বা ছিল একজন বিদ্রোহী৷
