2 Samuel

18

1And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds over them.
1 Rhestrodd Dafydd y bobl oedd gydag ef, a phenodi capteiniaid ar filoedd a chapteiniaid ar gannoedd.
2And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
2 Yna rhannodd y fyddin yn dair, traean o dan Joab, traean dan Abisai fab Serfia, brawd Joab, a thraean dan Itai y Gethiad; a dywedodd y brenin wrth y fyddin, "Mi ddof finnau hefyd gyda chwi."
3But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succor us out of the city.
3 Ond atebasant, "Ni chei di ddod. Petaem ni yn ffoi am ein heinioes, ni fyddai neb yn meddwl dim o'r peth; a phetai ein hanner yn marw, ni fyddai neb yn malio amdanom; ond yr wyt ti cystal deng mil ohonom ni. Felly'n awr y mae'n well i ni dy fod yn aros i'n cynorthwyo o'r ddinas."
4And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
4 Dywedodd y brenin y gwni'r hyn a dybient hwy yn orau, a safodd yn ymyl y porth fel yr oedd y fyddin yn mynd allan yn ei channoedd a'i miloedd.
5And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
5 Gorch-mynnodd y brenin i Joab, Abisai ac Itai, "Er fy mwyn i byddwch yn dyner wrth y llanc Absalom." Yr oedd y fyddin i gyd yn clywed pan roes y brenin orchymyn i'r capteiniaid ynglu375?n ag Absalom.
6So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
6 Aeth y fyddin i'r maes i gyfarfod ag Israel, a digwyddodd y frwydr yng nghoetir Effraim.
7Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.
7 Gorchfygwyd byddin Israel yno gan ddilynwyr Dafydd, a bu colledion mawr yno ugain mil o fewn y diwrnod hwnnw.
8For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
8 Lledodd yr ymladd dros y wlad i gyd, a difaodd y goedwig fwy o'r fyddin nag a wnaeth y cleddyf y diwrnod hwnnw.
9And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.
9 Digwyddodd dilynwyr Dafydd daro ar Absalom. Fel yr oedd Absalom yn marchogaeth ar ei ful, aeth hwnnw dan gangen derwen fawr; daliwyd pen Absalom yn y dderwen, a'i adael rhwng nef a daear wrth i'r mul oedd dano fynd yn ei flaen.
10And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.
10 Gwelodd rhywun ef, a dweud wrth Joab ei fod wedi gweld Absalom ynghrog mewn derwen.
11And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.
11 Ac meddai Joab wrth y dyn oedd wedi dweud wrtho, "Os gwelaist ti ef, pam na fu iti ei daro i lawr yn y fan? Fe fyddwn wedi gofalu am roi iti ddeg darn arian a gwregys."
12And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
12 Ond dywedodd y dyn wrth Joab, "Petawn i'n cael mil o ddarnau arian ar gledr fy llaw, ni feiddiwn estyn llaw yn erbyn mab y brenin; oherwydd fe glywsom 'n clustiau ein hunain pan roddodd y brenin orchymyn i ti ac i Abisai ac i Itai, a dweud, 'Cymerwch ofal, bawb, o'r llanc Absalom.'
13Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.
13 Pe bawn i wedi troseddu yn erbyn ei einioes, ni fyddai modd cuddio dim rhag y brenin; a byddit tithau wedi sefyll o'r naill ochr."
14Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
14 Atebodd Joab, "Nid wyf am wastraffu amser fel hyn gyda thi." Cymerodd dair picell yn ei law a thrywanu Absalom yn ei galon, ac yntau'n dal yn fyw yng nghanol y dderwen.
15And ten young men that bare Joab's armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
15 Yna tyrrodd deg llanc oedd yn gofalu am arfau Joab o gwmpas Absalom, a'i daro a'i ladd.
16And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
16 Ar hyn canodd Joab yr utgorn, a dychwelodd y fyddin o erlid yr Israeliaid am i Joab eu galw'n l.
17And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
17 Cymerwyd Absalom a'i fwrw i geubwll mawr oedd yn y goedwig, a chodi tomen enfawr o gerrig drosto. Ffodd yr Israeliaid i gyd adref.
18Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.
18 Yn ystod ei fywyd yr oedd Absalom wedi cymryd colofn a'i gosod i sefyll yn Nyffryn y Brenin, "Oherwydd," meddai, "nid oes gennyf fab i gadw f'enw mewn cof." Galwodd y golofn ar ei enw ei hun, ac fe'i gelwir hi'n Gofeb Absalom hyd heddiw.
19Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
19 Dywedodd Ahimaas fab Sadoc, "Gad i mi redeg a rhoi'r newydd i'r brenin fod yr ARGLWYDD wedi achub ei gam oddi ar law ei elynion."
20And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.
20 Ond dywedodd Joab wrtho, "Nid ti fydd y negesydd heddiw; cei fynd 'r neges rywdro arall, ond nid heddiw, oherwydd bod mab y brenin wedi marw."
21Then said Joab to Cushy, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushy bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
21 Yna meddai Joab wrth ryw Ethiopiad, "Dos, dywed wrth y brenin yr hyn a welaist." Moes-ymgrymodd yr Ethiopiad i Joab a rhedodd ymaith.
22Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushy. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
22 Ond gwnaeth Ahimaas fab Sadoc gais arall, ac meddai wrth Joab, "Beth bynnag a ddigwydd, yr wyf finnau hefyd am gael rhedeg ar l yr Ethiopiad." Gofynnodd Joab, "Pam y mae arnat ti eisiau mynd, fy machgen? Ni chei wobr am ddwyn y neges."
23But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushy.
23 Ond plediodd, "Sut bynnag y bydd, gad imi fynd." Felly dywedodd wrtho, "Dos, ynteu." Rhedodd Ahimaas ar hyd y gwastadedd, ac ennill y blaen ar yr Ethiopiad.
24And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
24 Yr oedd Dafydd yn eistedd rhwng y ddeuborth. Pan aeth gwyliwr i fyny uwchben y porth i ben y mur, a chodi ei lygaid ac edrych, dyna lle'r oedd dyn yn rhedeg ar ei ben ei hun.
25And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
25 Galwodd y gwyliwr a hysbysu'r brenin. Atebodd y brenin, "Os yw ar ei ben ei hun, y mae'n dod neges."
26And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
26 Fel yr oedd yn dal i agosu, sylwodd y gwyliwr ar ddyn arall yn rhedeg, a galwodd i lawr at y porthor a dweud, "Dacw ddyn arall yn rhedeg ar ei ben ei hun." Dywedodd y brenin, "Negesydd yw hwn eto."
27And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
27 Yna dywedodd y gwyliwr, "Yr wyf yn gweld y cyntaf yn rhedeg yn debyg i Ahimaas fab Sadoc." Ac meddai'r brenin, "Dyn da yw hwnnw; daw ef newyddion da,"
28And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
28 Pan gyrhaeddodd Ahimaas, dywedodd wrth y brenin, "Heddwch!" Yna moesymgrymodd i'r brenin 'i wyneb i'r llawr, a dweud, "Bendigedig fyddo'r ARGLWYDD dy Dduw, sydd wedi cau am y dynion a gododd yn erbyn f'arglwydd frenin."
29And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
29 Gofynnodd y brenin, "A yw'r llanc Absalom yn iawn?" Ac meddai Ahimaas, "Yr oedd dy was yn gweld cynnwrf mawr pan anfonodd Joab, gwas y brenin, fi i ffwrdd, ond ni wn beth oedd."
30And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
30 Dywedodd y brenin, "Saf yma o'r neilltu." Felly safodd o'r neilltu.
31And, behold, Cushy came; and Cushy said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
31 Yna cyrhaeddodd yr Ethiopiad a dweud, "Newydd da, f'arglwydd frenin! Oherwydd y mae'r ARGLWYDD wedi achub dy gam heddiw yn erbyn yr holl rai oedd yn codi yn dy erbyn."
32And the king said unto Cushy, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushy answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
32 Gofynnodd y brenin i'r Ethiopiad, "A yw'r llanc Absalom yn iawn?" Atebodd yr Ethiopiad, "Bydded i elynion f'arglwydd frenin a phawb sy'n codi yn d'erbyn er drwg, fod fel y llanc."
33And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
33 Cynhyrfodd y brenin, ac aeth i fyny i'r llofft uwchben y porth ac wylo; ac wrth fynd, yr oedd yn dweud fel hyn, "O Absalom fy mab, fy mab Absalom! O na fyddwn i wedi cael marw yn dy le, O Absalom fy mab, fy mab!"
