1Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
1Samoin te, vaimot, olkaa kuuliaisia miehellenne, jotta myös ne miehet, jotka ehkä eivät usko Jumalan sanaan, nyt vaimonsa elävällä esimerkillä ilman sanojakin voitettaisiin,
2While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
2kun he näkevät teidän elävän jumalanpelossa puhdasta elämää.
3Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
3Älkää pitäkö tärkeänä ulkonaista kaunistusta, älkää hiuslaitteita, kultakoruja tai hienoja vaatteita.
4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
4Teidän kaunistuksenne olkoon katoamatonta: salassa oleva sydämen ihminen, lempeä ja sävyisä henki. Tämä on Jumalan silmissä kallisarvoista.
5For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
5Näin kaunistivat itsensä entisajankin pyhät vaimot, jotka panivat toivonsa Jumalaan. He olivat miehilleen kuuliaiset --
6Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
6Saarakin oli kuuliainen Abrahamille ja kutsui häntä herraksi. Ja Saaran tyttäriä tekin olette, kun teette hyvää ettekä anna minkään uhkailun pelottaa itseänne.
7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
7Samoin te, miehet, eläkää vaimonne kanssa ymmärtäväisesti, muistaen, että hän on heikompi osapuoli. Osoittakaa hänelle kunnioitusta, sillä hän on yhtä lailla armon ja elämän perillinen. Näin ei mikään tule esteeksi rukouksillenne.
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
8Ja lopuksi: olkaa kaikki yksimielisiä, jakakaa toistenne ilot ja surut, rakastakaa toisianne ja olkaa hyväsydämisiä ja nöyriä.
9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
9Älkää vastatko pahaan pahalla älkääkä herjaukseen herjauksella, vaan päinvastoin siunatkaa. Siihen teidät on kutsuttukin, jotta perisitte siunauksen.
10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
10Sillä se, joka tahtoo rakastaa elämää ja haluaa nähdä hyviä päiviä, hillitköön kielensä pahoista sanoista ja huulensa valhetta puhumasta.
11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
11Kääntyköön hän pois pahasta ja tehköön hyvää, etsiköön rauhaa ja pyrkiköön siihen.
12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
12Sillä Herran silmät katsovat hurskaiden puoleen, hänen korvansa kuulevat heidän rukouksensa, mutta Herran kasvot kääntyvät pahantekijöitä vastaan.
13And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
13Kuka voi tehdä teille pahaa, jos te kiihkeästi pyritte tekemään hyvää?
14But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
14Ja vaikka joutuisittekin kärsimään vanhurskauden tähden, te olette autuaita. "Älkää heitä pelätkö älkääkä hämmentykö",
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
15vaan pyhittäkää Herra Kristus sydämessänne ja olkaa aina valmiit antamaan vastaus jokaiselle, joka kysyy, mihin teidän toivonne perustuu.
16Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
16Mutta vastatkaa sävyisästi ja kunnioittavasti ja säilyttäkää omatuntonne puhtaana -- silloin ne, jotka parjaavat teidän hyvää vaellustanne kristittynä, joutuvat häpeään juuri siinä, mistä teitä panettelevat.
17For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
17Parempi on tehdä hyvää ja kärsiä, jos niin on Jumalan tahto, kuin kärsiä pahojen tekojen tähden.
18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
18Kärsihän Kristuskin ainutkertaisen kuoleman syntien tähden, syytön syyllisten puolesta, johdattaakseen teidät Jumalan luo. Hänen ruumiinsa surmattiin, mutta hengessä hänet tehtiin eläväksi.
19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
19Ja niin hän myös meni ja saarnasi vankeudessa oleville hengille,
20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
20jotka muinoin eivät totelleet Jumalaa, kun hän Nooan päivinä kärsivällisesti odotti sen ajan, kun arkkia rakennettiin. Vain muutama ihminen, kaikkiaan kahdeksan, pelastui arkissa veden kantamana.
21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
21Tuon esikuvan mukaisesti teidät pelastaa nyt kaste, ei siksi että te siinä luovuitte saastaisesta elämästä, vaan koska Jumala teki kanssanne hyvän omantunnon liiton. Sen perustuksena on Jeesuksen Kristuksen ylösnousemus,
22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
22hänen, joka on mennyt taivaaseen ja istuu Jumalan oikealla puolella ja jolle on alistettu enkelit, vallat ja voimat.
