¹This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

¹Tämä sana on varma: joka pyrkii seurakunnan kaitsijan virkaan, tahtoo jaloon työhön.

²A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

²Seurakunnan kaitsijan tulee olla moitteeton, yhden vaimon mies, raitis, harkitseva, rauhallinen, vieraanvarainen ja taitava opettamaan,

³Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

³ei juomiseen taipuvainen, ei väkivaltainen eikä rahanahne, vaan lempeä ja sopuisa.

⁴One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

⁴Hänen on pidettävä hyvää huolta perheestään, kasvatettava lapsensa tottelevaisiksi ja saavutettava kaikkien kunnioitus.

⁵(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

⁵Jos joku ei osaa pitää huolta omasta perheestään, kuinka hän voisi huolehtia Jumalan seurakunnasta?

⁶Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁶Hän ei saa olla vastakääntynyt, jotta hän ei ylpistyisi eikä joutuisi tuomittavaksi Paholaisen kanssa.

⁷Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁷Hänen on nautittava myös ulkopuolisten arvonantoa, jottei hänestä puhuttaisi pahaa ja jottei hän lankeaisi Paholaisen virittämään ansaan.

⁸Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

⁸Myös seurakunnanpalvelijoiden on oltava arvokkaita ja vilpittömiä. He eivät saa käyttää liikaa viiniä eivätkä tavoitella omaa hyötyään.

⁹Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

⁹Heidän tulee tuntea uskon salaisuus ja pitää omatuntonsa puhtaana.

¹⁰And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

¹⁰Myös heidät on ensin tutkittava, ja kun heidät on todettu moitteettomiksi, he saavat ryhtyä hoitamaan tehtäväänsä.

¹¹Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

¹¹Samoin tulee naisten olla arvokkaita, eivätkä he saa puhua muista pahaa. Heidän on oltava raittiita ja kaikessa luotettavia.

¹²Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

¹²Seurakunnanpalvelijan on oltava yhden vaimon mies, ja hänen on pidettävä hyvää huolta lapsistaan ja perheväestään.

¹³For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹³Ne, jotka hoitavat virkansa hyvin, saavat arvostetun aseman ja voivat rohkeasti julistaa uskoa Kristukseen Jeesukseen.

¹⁴These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

¹⁴Kirjoitan tätä siinä toivossa, että pääsen pian tulemaan luoksesi.

¹⁵But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

¹⁵Jos tuloni kuitenkin viivästyy, saat tästä tietää, miten on käyttäydyttävä Jumalan temppelissä, elävän Jumalan seurakunnassa, joka on totuuden pylväs ja perustus.

¹⁶And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

¹⁶Me tunnustamme, että meidän uskomme pyhä salaisuus on suuri: Hän ilmestyi ihmisruumiissa, hänet julistettiin vanhurskaaksi Hengen voimasta, enkelit saivat hänet nähdä, hänestä saarnattiin kansoille, häneen uskottiin maailmassa, hänet korotettiin kirkkauteen.
