¹This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

¹Rakkaat ystävät! Tämä on jo toinen kirje, jonka teille kirjoitan. Molemmissa olen herätellyt ja muistuttanut teitä, joiden ajatukset ovat vilpittömiä,

²That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

²pitämään mielessänne pyhien profeettojen ennalta lausumat sanat sekä apostoleilta saamanne Herran ja Vapahtajan käskyn.

³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

³Erityisesti tietäkää, että lopun aikoina tulee pilkkaajia, jotka ovat omien himojensa vietävinä.

⁴And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

⁴He sanovat pilkaten: "Onko hän muka tullut, niin kuin lupasi? Isämme ovat nukkuneet pois, ja kaikki on entisellään, niin kuin on ollut maailman luomisesta asti."

⁵For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

⁵Tieten tahtoen he unohtavat, että jo aikojen alussa olivat olemassa taivaat ja maa, jotka Jumalan sana vedestä ja vedellä loi ja jotka se piti koossa.

⁶Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

⁶Vedellä ja sanalla sen ajan maailma myös hävitettiin vedenpaisumuksessa.

⁷But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

⁷Ja sen saman sanan varassa ovat nykyiset taivaat ja nykyinen maa tulen tuhoa odottamassa. Niitä säilytetään sitä päivää varten, jona tuomio tulee ja jumalattomat tuhotaan.

⁸But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

⁸Mutta älkää te, rakkaat ystävät, unohtako tätä: Herralle yksi päivä on kuin tuhat vuotta ja tuhat vuotta kuin yksi päivä.

⁹The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁹Ei Herra vitkastele täyttäessään lupaustaan, vaikka hän joidenkin mielestä on myöhässä. Päinvastoin: hän on kärsivällinen teitä kohtaan, koska ei halua kenenkään tuhoutuvan vaan tahtoo, että kaikki kääntyisivät.

¹⁰But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

¹⁰Herran päivä tulee kuin varas. Sinä päivänä taivaat katoavat jylisten, taivaankappaleet palavat ja hajoavat. Silloin paljastuu maa ja kaikki, mitä ihminen on maan päällä saanut aikaan.

¹¹Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

¹¹Koska tämä kaikki näin hajoaa, millaisia onkaan pyhässä elämässä ja hurskaissa teoissa oltava niiden,

¹²Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

¹²jotka odottavat Jumalan päivää ja jouduttavat sen tuloa -- tuon päivän, joka saa taivaat liekehtien hajoamaan ja taivaankappaleet sulamaan kuumuudesta.

¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

¹³Mutta meillä on hänen lupauksensa, ja siihen luottaen me odotamme uusia taivaita ja uutta maata, joissa vanhurskaus vallitsee.

¹⁴Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

¹⁴Rakkaat ystävät! Kun te tätä kaikkea odotatte, pyrkikää siihen, että Herra aikanaan voisi havaita teidät puhtaiksi ja moitteettomiksi ja teillä olisi rauha.

¹⁵And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

¹⁵Ja pitäkää sitä pelastuksenanne, että Herra on kärsivällinen. Näinhän myös rakas veljemme Paavali on hänelle annetun viisauden mukaisesti teille kirjoittanut.

¹⁶As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

¹⁶Samaa hän sanoo kaikissa kirjeissään, joissa puhuu näistä asioista. Niissä tosin on yhtä ja toista vaikeatajuista, mitä tietämättömät ja haihattelevat ihmiset omaksi tuhokseen vääristelevät niin kuin kaikkia muitakin pyhiä kirjoituksia.

¹⁷Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

¹⁷Kun siis te, rakkaat ystävät, olette ennalta selvillä tästä kaikesta, niin olkaa varuillanne. Älkää antako jumalattomien johtaa itseänne harhaan, niin että putoatte omalta varmalta pohjaltanne.

¹⁸But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

¹⁸Kasvakaa meidän Herramme Jeesuksen Kristuksen armossa ja tuntemisessa. Hänelle kunnia nyt ja iankaikkisuuden päivään asti. Aamen.
