¹Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

¹Sarai, Abramin vaimo, ei ollut synnyttänyt miehelleen lasta. Mutta Sarailla oli egyptiläinen orjatar, jonka nimi oli Hagar.

²And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

²Niin Sarai sanoi Abramille: "Herra ei ole sallinut minun synnyttää. Makaa siis minun orjattareni kanssa; ehkäpä hän voi synnyttää minulle lapsen." Abram myöntyi Sarain ehdotukseen.

³And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

³Abram oli asunut kymmenen vuotta Kanaaninmaassa, kun hänen vaimonsa Sarai antoi egyp- tiläisen orjattarensa Hagarin miehelleen Abramille sivuvaimoksi.

⁴And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

⁴Abram yhtyi Hagariin, ja tämä tuli raskaaksi. Kun Hagar huomasi olevansa raskaana, hän alkoi väheksyä emäntäänsä.

⁵And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

⁵Silloin Sarai sanoi Abramille: "Minua on loukattu, etkä sinä tee mitään. Minä itse annoin orjattareni sinun syliisi, mutta siitä saakka, kun hän sai tietää olevansa raskaana, hän on halveksinut minua. Herra ratkaiskoon meidän riitamme."

⁶But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

⁶Abram sanoi Saraille: "Hän on sinun orjattaresi. Voit tehdä hänelle, mitä hyväksi näet." Ja Sarai kuritti Hagaria niin että Hagar pakeni hänen luotaan.

⁷And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

⁷Herran enkeli kohtasi Hagarin autiomaassa vesilähteellä, joka oli Surin tien varressa.

⁸And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

⁸Hän sanoi: "Hagar, Sarain orjatar, mistä olet tulossa ja minne olet menossa?" Hagar vastasi: "Minä olen paennut emäntäni Sarain luota."

⁹And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

⁹Silloin Herran enkeli sanoi hänelle: "Palaa emäntäsi luo ja ota nöyrästi vastaan hänen kurituksensa."

¹⁰And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

¹⁰Herran enkeli sanoi hänelle vielä: "Minä teen sinun jälke- läistesi määrän niin suureksi, ettei sitä voi laskea."

¹¹And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

¹¹Sitten Herran enkeli sanoi hänelle: -- Sinä olet raskaana, ja kun synnytät pojan, anna hänelle nimeksi Ismael, sillä Herra kuuli, kun valitit hätääsi.

¹²And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

¹²Poikasi on oleva kuin villiaasi, hänen kätensä on kaikkia vastaan, ja kaikkien käsi on häntä vastaan, aina hän on oleva vastakkain kaikkien veljiensä kanssa.

¹³And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

¹³Niin Hagar alkoi kutsua Herraa, joka oli puhunut hänelle, nimellä El-Roi, 'Jumala joka minut näkee', sillä hän ajatteli: "Olenko todella saanut tässä paikassa nähdä hänet, joka valvoo askeleitani?"

¹⁴Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁴Siksi alettiin tuota Kadesin ja Beredin välillä sijaitsevaa vesipaikkaa nimittää Lahai-Roin kaivok- si.

¹⁵And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

¹⁵Hagar synnytti Abramille pojan, ja Abram antoi pojalleen, jonka Hagar oli synnyttänyt, nimen Ismael.

¹⁶And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

¹⁶Abram oli kahdeksankymmentäkuusivuotias, kun Hagar synnytti hänelle Ismaelin.
