¹Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

¹Älkäämme siis enää viipykö Kristuksen opin alkeissa, vaan edetkäämme täyteen tietoon. Emme voi uudestaan laskea perustusta ja opettaa sellaisia asioita kuin parannus kuolemaan johtavista teoista, usko Jumalaan,

²Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

²oppi kasteista ja puhdistusmenoista sekä kätten päällepanemisesta, kuolleiden ylösnousemus ja iankaikkinen tuomio.

³And this will we do, if God permit.

³Menkäämme eteenpäin, jos Jumala suo.

⁴For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

⁴Mahdotontahan on auttaa niitä, jotka kerran ovat päässeet valoon, maistaneet taivaan lahjaa ja tulleet osallisiksi Pyhästä Hengestä,

⁵And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

⁵nauttineet Jumalan hyvää sanaa ja kokeneet tulevan maailman voimia

⁶If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

⁶mutta luopuneet uskostaan. Ei heitä voi toistamiseen johdattaa kääntymykseen -- niitä, jotka nyt itse ristiinnaulitsevat Jumalan Pojan ja nostavat hänet kaikkien pilkattavaksi!

⁷For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

⁷Jos maa imee sisäänsä sateen, joka sitä usein kastelee, ja tuottaa sadon viljelijöilleen, se saa osakseen Jumalan siunauksen.

⁸But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

⁸Mutta jos se kasvaa ohdaketta ja orjantappuraa, se ei kelpaa mihinkään. Sitä uhkaa kirous, ja niin se lopulta poltetaan.

⁹But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

⁹Te, rakkaat ystävät, olette kuitenkin tuo parempi maa, ja teitä odottaa pelastus. Olemme siitä varmoja, vaikka puhunkin näin.

¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

¹⁰Eihän Jumala ole epäoikeudenmukainen, ei hän unohda teidän tekojanne eikä rakkauttanne, jota olette osoittaneet hänen nimeään kohtaan, kun olette palvelleet hänen pyhiään ja yhä palvelette heitä.

¹¹And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

¹¹Hartaasti vain odotamme, että te itse kukin loppuun asti yhtä innokkaasti haluatte kokea yhteisen toivomme täyttymisen.

¹²That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

¹²Älkää päästäkö itseänne veltostumaan, vaan seuratkaa niiden esimerkkiä, jotka ovat uskoneet ja kärsivällisesti odottaneet ja sen tähden saavat omakseen sen, minkä Jumala on luvannut.

¹³For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

¹³Antaessaan Abrahamille lupauksensa Jumala vannoi omaan nimeensä, koska ei ollut ketään suurempaa, jonka nimeen hän olisi vannonut.

¹⁴Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

¹⁴Hän lupasi: "Minä siunaan sinua runsain määrin ja annan sinulle runsaasti jälkeläisiä",

¹⁵And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

¹⁵ja kärsivällisesti odotettuaan Abraham sai, mitä hänelle oli luvattu.

¹⁶For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

¹⁶Ihmiset vannovat jonkun itseään suuremman nimeen. Vala merkitsee heille asian vahvistusta, se lopettaa kaikki vastaväitteet.

¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

¹⁷Siksi myös Jumala vannoi lupauksensa takeeksi vielä valan. Hän tahtoi tällä erityisellä tavalla osoittaa niille, joita lupaus koskee, että hänen päätöksensä ei muutu.

¹⁸That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

¹⁸Noilla kahdella järkähtämättömällä sanallaan, joissa hän, Jumala, ei voi valehdella, hän tahtoi rohkaista meitä, hänen turviinsa paenneita, ja kannustaa pitämään kiinni toivosta, joka on edessämme.

¹⁹Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

¹⁹Se toivo on elämämme ankkuri, luja ja varma. Se ulottuu väliverhon tuolle puolen.

²⁰Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

²⁰Sinne Jeesus meidän edelläkävijänämme meni, kun hän oli tullut ylipapiksi, jonka pappeus on ikuista, Melkisedekin pappeutta.
