¹After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

²Now the Jew's feast of tabernacles was at hand.

³His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

³Jeesuksen veljet sanoivat hänelle: "Lähde Juudeaan, niin opetuslapsesikin näkevät, millaisia tekoja sinä teet.

⁴For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

⁴Eihän kukaan salaile tekojaan, jos haluaa julkisuutta. Jos kerran pystyt tällaiseen, näytä maailmalle, kuka sinä olet!"

⁵For neither did his brethren believe in him.

⁵Veljetkään eivät näet uskoneet häneen.

⁶Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

⁶Jeesus sanoi heille: "Nyt ei ole vielä minun aikani -- teille taas sopii mikä aika hyvänsä.

⁷The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

⁷Maailma ei voi vihata teitä, mutta minua se vihaa, koska minä todistan, että sen teot ovat pahat.

⁸Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.

⁸Menkää te vain juhlille. Minä en tule tähän juhlaan, sillä minun aikani ei ole vielä tullut."

⁹When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

⁹Näin hän sanoi ja jäi Galileaan.

¹⁰But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

¹⁰Mutta kun veljet olivat lähteneet juhlille, myös Jeesus lähti sinne, ei ihmisten tieten vaan salaa.

¹¹Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

¹¹Juhlien alettua juutalaiset etsivät häntä ja kyselivät: "Missä se mies on?"

¹²And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

¹²Kansan keskuudessa hän oli yleisen kiistelyn aiheena. Toiset kiittivät: "Hän on hyvä mies", toiset sanoivat: "Kaikkea muuta, hän on kansanvillitsijä."

¹³Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

¹³Julkisesti kukaan ei kuitenkaan uskaltanut puhua hänestä, sillä kaikki pelkäsivät juutalaisia.

¹⁴Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁴Juhlan jo ehdittyä puoliväliin Jeesus meni ylös temppeliin ja alkoi opettaa.

¹⁵And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

¹⁵Juutalaiset olivat ihmeissään ja sanoivat: "Kuinka tuo oppimaton mies voi tuntea kirjoitukset?"

¹⁶Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁶Jeesus sanoi heille: "Se, mitä minä opetan, ei ole minun oppiani, vaan hänen, joka on minut lähettänyt.

¹⁷If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

¹⁷Joka tahtoo noudattaa hänen tahtoaan, pääsee kyllä selville siitä, onko opetukseni lähtöisin Jumalasta vai puhunko omiani.

¹⁸He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁸Se, joka esittää omia ajatuksiaan, tahtoo kunniaa itselleen. Mutta se, joka tahtoo kunniaa lähettäjälleen, puhuu totta, hänessä ei ole vääryyttä.

¹⁹Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

¹⁹Mooses antoi teille lain, vai kuinka? Silti yksikään teistä ei noudata sitä. Miksi te haluatte tappaa minut?"

²⁰The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

²⁰Ihmiset sanoivat: "Sinussa on paha henki. Kuka sinut yrittäisi tappaa?"

²¹Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

²¹Jeesus vastasi: "Minä tein yhden ainoan teon, ja sitä te kaikki ihmettelette.

²²Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

²²Mooses sääti teille ympärileikkauksen -- se ei tosin ole peräisin Moosekselta, vaan kantaisiltä -- ja te toimitatte sen myös sapattina.

²³If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

²³Jos kerran ihminen ympärileikataan sapattinakin, ettei Mooseksen lakia rikottaisi, niin miksi te olette vihoissanne siitä, että minä sapattina paransin koko ihmisen?

²⁴Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁴Älkää tuomitko sen mukaan, miltä asia päältä katsoen näyttää, vaan tuomitkaa oikein."

²⁵Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

²⁵Muutamat jerusalemilaiset sanoivat: "Eikö tämä ole se, jonka he haluaisivat tappaa?

²⁶But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

²⁶Kuinka kummassa hän saa puhua täällä vapaasti eivätkä he sano mitään? Ovatkohan hallitusmiehet nyt varmoja siitä, että hän on Messias?

²⁷Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

²⁷Tästä miehestä me kyllä tiedämme, mistä hän on kotoisin. Kun Messias ilmestyy, kukaan ei tiedä, mistä hän tulee."

²⁸Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

²⁸Opettaessaan temppelissä Jeesus huusi kovalla äänellä: "Te siis tiedätte, kuka minä olen ja mistä tulen. En minä ole tulostani itse päättänyt -- minut lähetti hän, joka on totuus itse. Te ette häntä tunne,

²⁹But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

²⁹mutta minä tunnen hänet, koska tulen hänen luotaan ja koska hän on minut lähettänyt."

³⁰Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

³⁰Hallitusmiesten teki mieli pidättää hänet, mutta kukaan ei kuitenkaan käynyt häneen käsiksi, sillä hänen hetkensä ei ollut vielä tullut.

³¹And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

³¹Monet kansanihmiset sen sijaan uskoivat häneen. He sanoivat: "Tokkopa Messias tullessaan tekee useampia tunnustekoja kuin tämä on jo tehnyt."

³²The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

³²Kun fariseukset kuulivat, että kansan parissa puhuttiin Jeesuksesta tähän tapaan, he ja ylipapit lähettivät miehiään pidättämään hänet.

³³Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

³³Jeesus sanoi: "Vähän aikaa minä vielä olen teidän luonanne. Sitten menen hänen luokseen, joka minut on lähettänyt.

³⁴Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

³⁴Silloin te etsitte minua mutta ette löydä, ettekä te pääse sinne, missä minä olen."

³⁵Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

³⁵Juutalaiset kyselivät toisiltaan: "Minne hän aikoo mennä? Mistä me emme häntä löytäisi? Onko hän lähdössä niiden luo, jotka asuvat kreikkalaisten keskuudessa? Aikooko hän opettaa kreikkalaisiakin?

³⁶What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

³⁶Mitä hän mahtoi tarkoittaa sanoessaan: 'Te etsitte minua mutta ette löydä', ja: 'Te ette pääse sinne, missä minä olen'?"

³⁷In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

³⁷Juhlan suurena päätöspäivänä Jeesus nousi puhumaan ja huusi kovalla äänellä: "Jos jonkun on jano, tulkoon minun luokseni ja juokoon!

³⁸He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

³⁸Joka uskoo minuun, 'hänen sisimmästään kumpuavat elävän veden virrat', niin kuin kirjoituksissa sanotaan."

³⁹(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

³⁹Tällä Jeesus tarkoitti Henkeä, jonka häneen uskovat tulisivat saamaan. Vielä ei Henki ollut tullut, koska Jeesusta ei vielä ollut kirkastettu.

⁴⁰Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

⁴⁰Jeesuksen sanat kuultuaan jotkut väkijoukosta sanoivat: "Tämän täytyy olla se profeetta."

⁴¹Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

⁴¹Toiset sanoivat: "Hän on Messias." Mutta toiset epäilivät: "Ei kai Messias Galileasta tule!

⁴²Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

⁴²Kirjoituksissahan sanotaan, että Messias on Daavidin jälkeläinen ja tulee Betlehemistä, Daavidin kotikaupungista."

⁴³So there was a division among the people because of him.

⁴³Näin ihmiset alkoivat kiistellä hänestä.

⁴⁴And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

⁴⁴Muutamat halusivat ottaa hänet kiinni, mutta kukaan ei kuitenkaan käynyt häneen käsiksi.

⁴⁵Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁵Jeesusta pidättämään lähetetyt miehet palasivat ylipappien ja fariseusten luo, ja nämä kysyivät: "Miksi ette tuoneet häntä?"

⁴⁶The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

⁴⁶Miehet vastasivat: "Yksikään ihminen ei ikinä ole puhunut sillä tavoin kuin hän."

⁴⁷Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

⁴⁷Silloin fariseukset sanoivat: "Oletteko tekin antaneet eksyttää itsenne?

⁴⁸Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

⁴⁸Onko kukaan hallitusmies uskonut häneen? Tai yksikään fariseus?

⁴⁹But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

⁴⁹Tuo rahvas ei tiedä laista mitään -- kirottuja kaikki!"

⁵⁰Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

⁵⁰Silloin Nikodemos, joka itse oli fariseus ja oli aiemmin käynyt tapaamassa Jeesusta, sanoi:

⁵¹Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

⁵¹"Eihän meidän lakimme mukaan ketään voi tuomita, ennen kuin on kuultu häntä ja otettu selville, mitä hän on tehnyt."

⁵²They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

⁵²Mutta toiset sanoivat hänelle: "Taidat olla itsekin Galileasta. Tutki kirjoituksia, niin opit, ettei Galileasta tule profeettaa."

⁵³And every man went unto his own house.
