¹Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

¹Was aber das betrifft, wovon ihr mir geschrieben habt, so ist es ja gut für den Menschen, kein Weib zu berühren;

²Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

²um aber Unzucht zu vermeiden, habe ein jeglicher seine eigene Frau und eine jegliche ihren eigenen Mann.

³Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

³Der Mann leiste der Frau die schuldige Pflicht, ebenso aber auch die Frau dem Manne.

⁴The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.

⁴Die Frau verfügt nicht selbst über ihren Leib, sondern der Mann; gleicherweise verfügt aber auch der Mann nicht selbst über seinen Leib, sondern die Frau.

⁵Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

⁵Entziehet euch einander nicht, außer nach Übereinkunft auf einige Zeit, damit ihr zum Gebet Muße habt, und kommet wieder zusammen, damit euch der Satan nicht versuche um eurer Unenthaltsamkeit willen.

⁶But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.

⁶Das sage ich aber aus Nachsicht und nicht als Befehl.

⁷For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

⁷Denn ich wollte, alle Menschen wären wie ich; aber jeder hat seine eigene Gnadengabe von Gott, der eine so, der andere so.

⁸I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.

⁸Ich sage aber den Ledigen und den Witwen: Es ist gut für sie, wenn sie bleiben wie ich.

⁹But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

⁹Können sie sich aber nicht enthalten, so sollen sie heiraten; denn heiraten ist besser als in Glut geraten.

¹⁰And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

¹⁰Den Verheirateten aber gebiete nicht ich, sondern der Herr, daß eine Frau sich nicht scheide von dem Manne;

¹¹But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

¹¹wäre sie aber schon geschieden, so bleibe sie unverheiratet oder versöhne sich mit dem Manne. Der Mann aber soll die Frau nicht verstoßen.

¹²But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

¹²Den übrigen aber sage ich, nicht der Herr: Wenn ein Bruder eine ungläubige Frau hat, und diese ist einverstanden, bei ihm zu wohnen, so soll er sie nicht verstoßen;

¹³And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.

¹³und wenn eine Frau einen ungläubigen Mann hat, und dieser ist einverstanden, bei ihr zu wohnen, so soll sie den Mann nicht verlassen.

¹⁴For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

¹⁴Denn der ungläubige Mann ist geheiligt durch die Frau, und die ungläubige Frau ist geheiligt durch den Bruder; sonst wären eure Kinder unrein, nun aber sind sie heilig.

¹⁵But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.

¹⁵Will sich aber der ungläubige Teil scheiden, so scheide er! Der Bruder oder die Schwester ist in solchen Fällen nicht gebunden. In Frieden aber hat uns Gott berufen.

¹⁶For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

¹⁶Denn was weißt du, Frau, ob du den Mann retten kannst? Oder was weißt du, Mann, ob du die Frau retten kannst?

¹⁷But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.

¹⁷Doch wie der Herr einem jeden zugeteilt hat, wie der Herr einen jeden berufen hat, so wandle er! Und so verordne ich es in allen Gemeinden.

¹⁸Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.

¹⁸Ist jemand nach erfolgter Beschneidung berufen worden, so lasse er sich von ihr nicht wieder gewinnen; ist jemand in unbeschnittenem Zustand berufen worden, so lasse er sich nicht beschneiden.

¹⁹Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

¹⁹Beschnitten sein ist nichts und unbeschnitten sein ist auch nichts, wohl aber Gottes Gebote halten.

²⁰Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.

²⁰Jeder bleibe in dem Stand, darin er berufen worden ist.

²¹Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

²¹Bist du als Sklave berufen worden, so sei deshalb ohne Sorge! Kannst du aber frei werden, so benütze es lieber.

²²For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

²²Denn der im Herrn berufene Sklave ist ein Freigelassener des Herrn; desgleichen ist der berufene Freie ein Knecht Christi.

²³Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

²³Ihr seid teuer erkauft; werdet nicht der Menschen Knechte!

²⁴Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.

²⁴Brüder, es bleibe ein jeglicher vor Gott in dem Stand , worin er berufen worden ist.

²⁵Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.

²⁵Betreffs der Jungfrauen aber habe ich keinen Auftrag vom Herrn; ich gebe aber ein Gutachten ab als einer, der vom Herrn begnadigt worden ist, treu zu sein.

²⁶I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.

²⁶So halte ich nun, um der bevorstehenden Not willen, für richtig, daß es nämlich für einen Menschen gut sei, so zu sein.

²⁷Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.

²⁷Bist du an eine Frau gebunden, so suche keine Lösung; bist du los von der Frau, so suche keine Frau.

²⁸But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.

²⁸Wenn du aber auch heiratest, so sündigest du nicht; und wenn die Jungfrau heiratet, so sündigt sie nicht; doch werden solche leibliche Trübsal haben, die ich euch gerne ersparen möchte.

²⁹But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;

²⁹Das aber sage ich, ihr Brüder: Die Zeit ist beschränkt! So mögen nun in der noch verbleibenden Frist die, welche Frauen haben, sein, als hätten sie keine,

³⁰And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;

³⁰und die da weinen, als weinten sie nicht, und die sich freuen, als freuten sie sich nicht, und die da kaufen, als besäßen sie es nicht,

³¹And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

³¹und die diese Welt gebrauchen, als brauchten sie sie gar nicht; denn die Gestalt dieser Welt vergeht.

³²But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:

³²Ich will aber, daß ihr ohne Sorgen seid! Der Unverheiratete ist für die Sache des Herrn besorgt, wie er dem Herrn gefalle;

³³But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.

³³der Verheiratete aber sorgt für die Dinge der Welt, wie er der Frau gefalle, und er ist geteilt.

³⁴There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

³⁴So ist auch die Frau, die keinen Mann hat, und die Jungfrau besorgt um die Sache des Herrn, daß sie heilig sei am Leibe und am Geist; die Verheiratete aber sorgt für die Dinge der Welt, wie sie dem Manne gefalle.

³⁵And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.

³⁵Das sage ich aber zu eurem eigenen Nutzen, nicht um euch eine Schlinge um den Hals zu werfen, sondern damit ihr in allem Anstand und ungeteilt bei dem Herrn verharren könnet.

³⁶But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.

³⁶Wenn aber jemand meint, daß es für seine Jungfrau unschicklich sei, über die Jahre der Reife hinauszukommen, und wenn es dann so sein muß, der tue, was er will; er sündigt nicht, sie mögen heiraten!

³⁷Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.

³⁷Wenn aber einer in seinem Herzen fest geworden ist und keine Verpflichtung hat, sondern Macht, nach seinem eigenen Willen zu handeln, und in seinem eigenen Herzen beschlossen hat, seine Jungfrau zu behalten, der tut wohl.

³⁸So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.

³⁸Doch tut auch der wohl, welcher sie zur Ehe gibt; wer sie aber nicht gibt, tut besser.

³⁹The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

³⁹Eine Frau ist gebunden, solange ihr Mann lebt; wenn aber ihr Mann entschlafen ist, so ist sie frei, sich zu verheiraten, mit wem sie will; nur daß es im Herrn geschehe.

⁴⁰But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

⁴⁰Seliger aber ist sie, wenn sie so bleibt, nach meiner Meinung; ich glaube aber auch den heiligen Geist zu haben.
