¹There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

¹Es war aber in Cäsarea ein Mann, namens Kornelius, ein Hauptmann der Rotte, welche man «die italienische» nennt;

²A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

²fromm und gottesfürchtig samt seinem ganzen Hause, der dem Volke viele Almosen spendete und ohne Unterlaß zu Gott betete.

³He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

³Der sah in einem Gesichte deutlich, etwa um die neunte Stunde des Tages, einen Engel Gottes zu ihm hereinkommen, der zu ihm sprach: Kornelius!

⁴And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

⁴Er aber blickte ihn an, erschrak und sprach: Was ist's, Herr? Er sprach zu ihm: Deine Gebete und deine Almosen sind hinaufgekommen ins Gedächtnis vor Gott!

⁵And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

⁵Und nun sende Männer nach Joppe und laß einen gewissen Simon holen, den man Petrus nennt.

⁶He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

⁶Dieser ist zur Herberge bei einem Gerber Simon, dessen Haus am Meere liegt; der wird dir sagen, was du tun sollst.

⁷And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

⁷Als nun der Engel, der mit ihm redete, hinweggegangen war, rief er zwei seiner Hausknechte und einen gottesfürchtigen Kriegsknecht von denen, die stets um ihn waren,

⁸And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁸und erzählte ihnen alles und sandte sie nach Joppe.

⁹On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

⁹Am folgenden Tage aber, als jene auf dem Wege waren und sich der Stadt näherten, stieg Petrus auf das Dach, um zu beten, etwa um die sechste Stunde.

¹⁰And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

¹⁰Da wurde er hungrig und wollte essen. Während man aber etwas zubereitete, kam eine Verzückung über ihn.

¹¹And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

¹¹Und er sieht den Himmel geöffnet und ein Gefäß wie ein großes, leinenes Tuch herabkommen, das an vier Enden gebunden auf die Erde niedergelassen wurde;

¹²Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

¹²darin waren allerlei vierfüßige und wilde und kriechende Tiere der Erde und Vögel des Himmels.

¹³And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

¹³Und es sprach eine Stimme zu ihm: Steh auf, Petrus, schlachte und iß!

¹⁴But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

¹⁴Petrus aber sprach: Keineswegs, Herr; denn ich habe noch nie etwas Gemeines oder Unreines gegessen!

¹⁵And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

¹⁵Und eine Stimme sprach wiederum, zum zweitenmal, zu ihm: Was Gott gereinigt hat, das halte du nicht für gemein!

¹⁶This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

¹⁶Solches geschah dreimal, und das Gefäß wurde wieder in den Himmel hinaufgezogen.

¹⁷Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

¹⁷Als aber Petrus bei sich selbst ganz ungewiß war, was das Gesicht bedeute, das er gesehen hatte, siehe, da standen die von Kornelius abgesandten Männer, welche das Haus Simons erfragt hatten, am Toreingang,

¹⁸And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

¹⁸riefen und erkundigten sich, ob Simon mit dem Zunamen Petrus hier zur Herberge sei.

¹⁹While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

¹⁹Während nun Petrus über das Gesicht nachdachte, sprach der Geist zu ihm: Siehe, drei Männer suchen dich!

²⁰Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

²⁰Darum steh auf, steige hinab und ziehe ohne Bedenken mit ihnen, denn Ich habe sie gesandt!

²¹Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

²¹Da stieg Petrus zu den Männern hinab und sprach: Siehe, ich bin der, den ihr suchet. Was ist die Ursache, weshalb ihr hier seid?

²²And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

²²Sie aber sprachen: Kornelius, der Hauptmann, ein rechtschaffener und gottesfürchtiger Mann, der ein gutes Zeugnis hat beim ganzen Volk der Juden, hat von einem heiligen Engel den Befehl erhalten, dich in sein Haus holen zu lassen, um Worte von dir zu hören.

²³Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

²³Da rief er sie herein und beherbergte sie. Am folgenden Tage aber stand er auf und zog mit ihnen, und etliche Brüder von Joppe gingen mit ihm.

²⁴And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

²⁴Und am andern Tage kamen sie nach Cäsarea. Kornelius aber wartete auf sie und hatte seine Verwandten und seine vertrauten Freunde zusammenberufen.

²⁵And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

²⁵Als es nun geschah, daß Petrus hineinkam, ging ihm Kornelius entgegen und fiel ihm zu Füßen und betete an.

²⁶But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

²⁶Petrus aber richtete ihn auf und sprach: Steh auf! ich bin auch ein Mensch.

²⁷And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

²⁷Und indem er sich mit ihm unterredete, ging er hinein und fand viele versammelt.

²⁸And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

²⁸Und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr wißt, daß es einem jüdischen Manne nicht erlaubt ist, mit einem Ausländer zu verkehren oder sich ihm zu nahen; aber mir hat Gott gezeigt, daß ich keinen Menschen gemein oder unrein nennen soll.

²⁹Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

²⁹Darum bin ich auch ohne Widerrede gekommen, als ich hergerufen wurde. Und nun frage ich: Aus welchem Grunde habt ihr mich gerufen?

³⁰And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

³⁰Und Kornelius sprach: Vor vier Tagen, um diese Stunde, fastete und betete ich um die neunte Stunde in meinem Hause. Und siehe, da stand ein Mann in glänzendem Kleide vor mir und sprach:

³¹And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

³¹Kornelius, dein Gebet ist erhört, und deiner Almosen ist vor Gott gedacht worden!

³²Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

³²Darum sende nach Joppe und laß Simon, der Petrus genannt wird, holen; dieser ist zur Herberge im Hause Simons, eines Gerbers, am Meer; der wird, wenn er kommt, zu dir reden.

³³Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

³³Da schickte ich zur Stunde zu dir, und du hast wohl daran getan, daß du gekommen bist. So sind wir nun alle vor Gott gegenwärtig, zu hören alles, was dir von Gott aufgetragen ist!

³⁴Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

³⁴Da tat Petrus den Mund auf und sprach: Nun erfahre ich in Wahrheit, daß Gott die Person nicht ansieht,

³⁵But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

³⁵sondern daß in allem Volk, wer ihn fürchtet und Gerechtigkeit übt, ihm angenehm ist!

³⁶The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

³⁶Das Wort, das er den Kindern Israel gesandt hat, indem er Frieden verkünden ließ durch Jesus Christus, welcher ist aller Herr,

³⁷That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

³⁷ihr kennet es, nämlich die Geschichte, die in ganz Judäa geschehen ist und in Galiläa anfing nach der Taufe, die Johannes predigte:

³⁸How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

³⁸Jesus von Nazareth, wie Gott ihn mit heiligem Geist und Kraft gesalbt hat, welcher umherzog, indem er wohltat und alle heilte, die vom Teufel überwältigt waren; denn Gott war mit ihm.

³⁹And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

³⁹Und wir sind Zeugen alles dessen, was er im jüdischen Lande und zu Jerusalem getan; den haben sie ans Holz gehängt und getötet.

⁴⁰Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

⁴⁰Diesen hat Gott am dritten Tage auferweckt und hat ihn offenbar werden lassen,

⁴¹Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

⁴¹nicht allem Volke, sondern uns, den von Gott vorher erwählten Zeugen, die wir mit ihm gegessen und getrunken haben nach seiner Auferstehung von den Toten.

⁴²And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

⁴²Und er hat uns geboten, dem Volke zu verkündigen und zu bezeugen, daß er der von Gott verordnete Richter der Lebendigen und der Toten sei.

⁴³To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

⁴³Von diesem legen alle Propheten Zeugnis ab, daß jeder, der an ihn glaubt, durch seinen Namen Vergebung der Sünden empfangen soll.

⁴⁴While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

⁴⁴Während Petrus noch diese Worte redete, fiel der heilige Geist auf alle, die dem Wort zuhörten.

⁴⁵And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

⁴⁵Und die Gläubigen aus der Beschneidung, soviele ihrer mit Petrus gekommen waren, erstaunten, daß die Gabe des heiligen Geistes auch über die Heiden ausgegossen wurde.

⁴⁶For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

⁴⁶Denn sie hörten sie in Zungen reden und Gott hoch preisen. Da antwortete Petrus:

⁴⁷Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

⁴⁷Kann auch jemand das Wasser verwehren, daß diese nicht getauft werden, die den heiligen Geist empfangen haben, gleichwie wir?

⁴⁸And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

⁴⁸Und er befahl, daß sie getauft würden im Namen des Herrn. Da baten sie ihn, etliche Tage zu bleiben.
