¹And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

¹In jenen Tagen aber, als die Zahl der Jünger wuchs, entstand ein Murren der Hellenisten gegen die Hebräer, weil ihre Witwen bei der täglichen Hilfeleistung übersehen wurden.

²Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

²Da beriefen die Zwölf die Menge der Jünger zusammen und sprachen: Es ziemt sich nicht, daß wir das Wort Gottes verlassen, um bei den Tischen zu dienen.

³Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

³Darum, ihr Brüder, sehet euch nach sieben Männern aus eurer Mitte um, von gutem Zeugnis, voll heiligen Geistes und Weisheit; die wollen wir für diesen Bedarf bestellen,

⁴But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

⁴wir aber wollen im Gebet und im Dienste des Wortes verharren.

⁵And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

⁵Und die Rede gefiel der ganzen Menge, und sie erwählten Stephanus, einen Mann voll Glaubens und heiligen Geistes, und Philippus und Prochorus und Nikanor und Timon und Parmenas und Nikolaus, einen Proselyten aus Antiochia.

⁶Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

⁶Diese stellten sie vor die Apostel, und sie beteten und legten ihnen die Hände auf.

⁷And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

⁷Und das Wort Gottes nahm zu, und die Zahl der Jünger mehrte sich sehr zu Jerusalem, auch eine große Zahl von Priestern wurden dem Glauben gehorsam.

⁸And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

⁸Stephanus aber, voll Gnade und Kraft, tat Wunder und große Zeichen unter dem Volk.

⁹Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

⁹Es standen aber etliche aus der sogenannten Synagoge der Libertiner und Kyrenäer und Alexandriner und derer von Cilicien und Asien auf und stritten mit Stephanus.

¹⁰And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

¹⁰Und sie vermochten der Weisheit und dem Geist, womit er redete, nicht zu widerstehen.

¹¹Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

¹¹Da stifteten sie Männer an, die sagten: Wir haben ihn Lästerworte wider Mose und Gott reden hören.

¹²And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

¹²Und sie wiegelten das Volk und die Ältesten und die Schriftgelehrten auf, überfielen ihn, rissen ihn fort und führten ihn vor den Hohen Rat.

¹³And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

¹³Und sie stellten falsche Zeugen, die sagten: Dieser Mensch hört nicht auf, Reden zu führen wider diese heilige Stätte und das Gesetz!

¹⁴For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

¹⁴Denn wir haben ihn sagen hören: Dieser Jesus von Nazareth wird diese Stätte zerstören und die Gebräuche ändern, die uns Mose überliefert hat!

¹⁵And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

¹⁵Und da alle, die im Hohen Rate saßen, ihn anblickten, sahen sie sein Angesicht, das war wie eines Engels Angesicht.
