¹Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

¹Darum wollen wir jetzt die Anfangslehre von Christus verlassen und zur Vollkommenheit übergehen, nicht abermals den Grund legen mit der Buße von toten Werken und dem Glauben an Gott,

²Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

²mit der Lehre von Taufen, von der Handauflegung, der Totenauferstehung und dem ewigen Gericht.

³And this will we do, if God permit.

³Und das wollen wir tun, wenn Gott es zuläßt.

⁴For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

⁴Denn es ist unmöglich, die, welche einmal erleuchtet worden sind und die himmlische Gabe geschmeckt haben und des heiligen Geistes teilhaftig geworden sind

⁵And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

⁵und das gute Wort Gottes, dazu Kräfte der zukünftigen Welt geschmeckt haben,

⁶If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

⁶wenn sie dann abgefallen sind, wieder zu erneuern zur Buße, während sie sich selbst den Sohn Gottes wiederum kreuzigen und zum Gespött machen!

⁷For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

⁷Denn ein Erdreich, welches den Regen trinkt, der sich öfters darüber ergießt und nützliches Gewächs hervorbringt denen, für die es bebaut wird, empfängt Segen von Gott;

⁸But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

⁸welches aber Dornen und Disteln trägt, ist untauglich und dem Fluche nahe, es wird zuletzt verbrannt.

⁹But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

⁹Wir sind aber überzeugt, Brüder, daß euer Zustand besser ist und dem Heile näher kommt, obgleich wir so reden.

¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

¹⁰Denn Gott ist nicht ungerecht, daß er eurer Arbeit und der Liebe vergäße, die ihr gegen seinen Namen bewiesen habt, indem ihr den Heiligen dientet und noch dienet.

¹¹And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

¹¹Wir wünschen aber, daß jeder von euch denselben Fleiß bis ans Ende beweise, entsprechend der vollen Gewißheit der Hoffnung,

¹²That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

¹²daß ihr ja nicht träge werdet, sondern Nachfolger derer, welche durch Glauben und Geduld die Verheißungen ererben.

¹³For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

¹³Denn als Gott dem Abraham die Verheißung gab, schwur er, da er bei keinem Größeren schwören konnte, bei sich selbst

¹⁴Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

¹⁴und sprach: «Wahrlich, ich will dich reichlich segnen und mächtig vermehren!»

¹⁵And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

¹⁵Und da er sich so geduldete, erlangte er die Verheißung.

¹⁶For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

¹⁶Menschen schwören ja bei dem Größeren, und für sie ist der Eid das Ende alles Widerspruchs und dient als Bürgschaft.

¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

¹⁷Darum ist Gott, als er den Erben der Verheißung in noch stärkerem Maße beweisen wollte, wie unwandelbar sein Ratschluß sei, mit einem Eid ins Mittel getreten,

¹⁸That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

¹⁸damit wir durch zwei unwandelbare Tatsachen, bei welchen Gott unmöglich lügen konnte, einen starken Trost haben, wir, die wir unsere Zuflucht dazu nehmen, die dargebotene Hoffnung zu ergreifen,

¹⁹Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

¹⁹und welche wir festhalten als einen sicheren und festen Anker der Seele, der auch hineinreicht ins Innere, hinter den Vorhang,

²⁰Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

²⁰wohin als Vorläufer Jesus für uns eingegangen ist, nach der Ordnung Melchisedeks Hoherpriester geworden in Ewigkeit.
