¹Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

¹Es war aber einer krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Dorfe der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha,

²(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

²nämlich der Maria, die den Herrn gesalbt und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren getrocknet hat; deren Bruder Lazarus war krank.

³Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

³Da ließen ihm die Schwestern sagen: Herr, siehe, den du lieb hast, der ist krank!

⁴When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

⁴Als Jesus es hörte, sprach er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern zur Ehre Gottes, damit der Sohn Gottes dadurch verherrlicht werde!

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁵Jesus aber liebte Martha und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.

⁶When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

⁶Als er nun hörte, daß jener krank sei, blieb er noch zwei Tage an dem Orte, wo er war.

⁷Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

⁷Dann erst spricht er zu den Jüngern: Laßt uns wieder nach Judäa ziehen!

⁸His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

⁸Die Jünger sprechen zu ihm: Rabbi, eben noch haben dich die Juden zu steinigen gesucht, und du begibst dich wieder dorthin?

⁹Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

⁹Jesus antwortete: Hat der Tag nicht zwölf Stunden? Wenn jemand bei Tage wandelt, so stößt er nicht an, denn er sieht das Licht dieser Welt.

¹⁰But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

¹⁰Wenn aber jemand bei Nacht wandelt, so stößt er an, weil das Licht nicht in ihm ist.

¹¹These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

¹¹Solches sprach er, und darnach sagte er zu ihnen: Unser Freund Lazarus ist entschlafen; aber ich gehe hin, um ihn aus dem Schlafe zu erwecken.

¹²Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

¹²Da sprachen seine Jünger: Herr, ist er entschlafen, so wird er genesen!

¹³Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

¹³Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tode geredet; sie meinten aber, er rede von dem natürlichen Schlaf.

¹⁴Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

¹⁴Da sagte es ihnen Jesus frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;

¹⁵And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

¹⁵und ich bin froh um euretwillen, daß ich nicht dort gewesen bin, damit ihr glaubet. Aber lasset uns zu ihm gehen!

¹⁶Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

¹⁶Da sprach Thomas, der Zwilling genannt wird, zu den Mitjüngern: Lasset uns auch hingehen, daß wir mit ihm sterben!

¹⁷Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

¹⁷Als nun Jesus hinkam, fand er ihn schon vier Tage im Grabe liegend.

¹⁸Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

¹⁸Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, ungefähr fünfzehn Stadien weit.

¹⁹And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

¹⁹Und viele von den Juden waren zu Martha und Maria gekommen, um sie wegen ihres Bruders zu trösten.

²⁰Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

²⁰Als Martha nun hörte, daß Jesus komme, lief sie ihm entgegen, Maria aber blieb im Hause.

²¹Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

²¹Da sprach Martha zu Jesus: Herr, wärest du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!

²²But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

²²Aber auch jetzt weiß ich, was immer du von Gott erbitten wirst, das wird Gott dir geben.

²³Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

²³Jesus spricht zu ihr: Dein Bruder soll auferstehen!

²⁴Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

²⁴Martha spricht zu ihm: Ich weiß, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am letzten Tage.

²⁵Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

²⁵Jesus spricht zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er stirbt;

²⁶And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

²⁶und jeder, der da lebt und an mich glaubt, wird in Ewigkeit nicht sterben. Glaubst du das?

²⁷She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

²⁷Sie spricht zu ihm: Ja, Herr, ich glaube, daß du der Christus bist, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt kommen soll.

²⁸And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

²⁸Und als sie das gesagt hatte, ging sie weg und rief ihre Schwester Maria heimlich und sprach: Der Meister ist da und ruft dich!

²⁹As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

²⁹Als diese es hörte, stand sie eilends auf und begab sich zu ihm.

³⁰Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

³⁰Jesus war aber noch nicht in den Flecken gekommen, sondern befand sich noch an dem Orte, wo Martha ihm begegnet war.

³¹The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

³¹Als nun die Juden, die bei ihr im Hause waren und sie trösteten, sahen, daß Maria so eilends aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr nach, in der Meinung, sie gehe zum Grabe, um dort zu weinen.

³²Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³²Als aber Maria dahin kam, wo Jesus war, und ihn sah, fiel sie ihm zu Füßen und sprach zu ihm: Herr, wärest du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

³³Als nun Jesus sah, wie sie weinte, und wie die Juden, die mit ihr gekommen waren, weinten, ergrimmte er im Geiste und wurde bewegt

³⁴And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁴und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sprechen zu ihm: Herr, komm und sieh!

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁵Jesus weinte.

³⁶Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

³⁶Da sagten die Juden: Seht, wie hatte er ihn so lieb! Etliche aber von ihnen sprachen:

³⁷And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

³⁷Konnte der, welcher dem Blinden die Augen aufgetan hat, nicht machen, daß auch dieser nicht stürbe?

³⁸Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

³⁸Jesus nun, indem er abermals bei sich selbst ergrimmte, kam zum Grabe. Es war aber eine Höhle, und ein Stein lag davor.

³⁹Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

³⁹Jesus spricht: Hebet den Stein weg! Martha, die Schwester des Verstorbenen, spricht zu ihm: Herr, er riecht schon, denn er ist schon vier Tage hier.

⁴⁰Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

⁴⁰Jesus spricht zu ihr: Habe ich dir nicht gesagt, wenn du glaubst, werdest du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?

⁴¹Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

⁴¹Da hoben sie den Stein weg. Jesus aber hob die Augen empor und sprach: Vater, ich danke dir, daß du mich erhört hast.

⁴²And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴²Doch ich weiß, daß du mich allezeit erhörst; aber um des umstehenden Volkes willen habe ich es gesagt, damit sie glauben, daß du mich gesandt hast.

⁴³And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴³Und als er solches gesagt, rief er mit lauter Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!

⁴⁴And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁴Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, an Händen und Füßen mit Grabtüchern umwickelt und sein Angesicht mit einem Schweißtuch umhüllt. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Bindet ihn los und laßt ihn gehen!

⁴⁵Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

⁴⁵Viele nun von den Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und sahen, was Jesus getan hatte, glaubten an ihn.

⁴⁶But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

⁴⁶Etliche von ihnen aber gingen zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.

⁴⁷Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

⁴⁷Da versammelten die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer den Hohen Rat und sprachen: Was wollen wir machen? Denn dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen!

⁴⁸If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

⁴⁸Lassen wir ihn so fortfahren, so werden alle an ihn glauben; und dann kommen die Römer und nehmen uns Land und Leute weg.

⁴⁹And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

⁴⁹Einer aber von ihnen, Kajaphas, der in jenem Jahre Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen:

⁵⁰Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

⁵⁰Ihr wisset nichts und bedenket nicht, daß es für uns besser ist, ein Mensch sterbe für das Volk, als daß das ganze Volk verderbe!

⁵¹And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

⁵¹Solches aber redete er nicht aus sich selbst; sondern weil er in jenem Jahre Hoherpriester war, weissagte er; denn Jesus sollte sterben für das Volk,

⁵²And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

⁵²und nicht für das Volk allein, sondern damit er auch die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in Eins zusammenbrächte.

⁵³Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

⁵³Von jenem Tage an beratschlagten sie nun, ihn zu töten.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

⁵⁴Darum wandelte Jesus nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden, sondern zog von dort weg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, in eine Stadt namens Ephraim, und hielt sich daselbst auf mit seinen Jüngern.

⁵⁵And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁵Es war aber das Passah der Juden nahe. Und viele aus der Gegend gingen vor dem Passah nach Jerusalem hinauf, um sich zu reinigen.

⁵⁶Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

⁵⁶Da suchten sie Jesus und sprachen zueinander, im Tempel stehend: Was dünkt euch, kommt er nicht auf das Fest?

⁵⁷Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

⁵⁷Es hatten aber auch die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer einen Befehl gegeben, daß, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sei, er es anzeige, damit sie ihn greifen könnten.
