¹And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

¹Und es begab sich, als Jesus die Befehle an seine zwölf Jünger vollendet hatte, zog er von dannen, um in ihren Städten zu lehren und zu predigen.

²Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

²Als aber Johannes im Gefängnis die Werke Christi vernahm, ließ er ihn durch seine Jünger fragen:

³And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

³Bist du es, der da kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen andern warten?

⁴Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

⁴Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin und verkündiget dem Johannes, was ihr sehet und höret:

⁵The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

⁵Blinde werden sehend, und Lahme wandeln, Aussätzige werden rein, und Taube hören, Tote stehen auf, und den Armen wird das Evangelium gepredigt.

⁶And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

⁶Und selig ist, wer sich nicht ärgert an mir!

⁷And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

⁷Als aber diese aufbrachen, fing Jesus an zur Volksmenge zu reden über Johannes: Was seid ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen zu sehen? Ein Rohr, das vom Winde bewegt wird?

⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

⁸Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Menschen, mit weichen Kleidern angetan? Siehe, die weiche Kleider tragen, sind in den Häusern der Könige!

⁹But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

⁹Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen? Wolltet ihr einen Propheten sehen? Ja, ich sage euch, einen, der mehr ist als ein Prophet!

¹⁰For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

¹⁰Denn dieser ist's, von dem geschrieben steht: «Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesichte her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll.»

¹¹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹¹Wahrlich, ich sage euch, unter denen, die vom Weibe geboren sind, ist kein Größerer aufgetreten, als Johannes der Täufer. Doch der Kleinste im Himmelreich ist größer als er.

¹²And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

¹²Aber von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers an bis jetzt leidet das Himmelreich Gewalt, und die, welche Gewalt anwenden, reißen es an sich.

¹³For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

¹³Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz bis auf Johannes haben geweissagt.

¹⁴And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

¹⁴Und wenn ihr es annehmen wollt: er ist der Elia, der da kommen soll.

¹⁵He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!

¹⁶But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,

¹⁶Wem soll ich aber dieses Geschlecht vergleichen? Es ist Kindern gleich, die am Markte sitzen und ihren Gespielen zurufen

¹⁷And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

¹⁷und sprechen: Wir haben euch aufgespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben geklagt, und ihr habt nicht geweint!

¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

¹⁸Denn Johannes ist gekommen, der aß nicht und trank nicht; da sagen sie: Er hat einen Dämon!

¹⁹The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

¹⁹Des Menschen Sohn ist gekommen, der ißt und trinkt; da sagen sie: Siehe, wie ist der Mensch ein Fresser und Weinsäufer, der Zöllner und Sünder Freund! Und die Weisheit ist durch ihre Kinder gerechtfertigt worden.

²⁰Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

²⁰Da fing er an, die Städte zu schelten, in welchen die meisten seiner Taten geschehen waren, weil sie nicht Buße getan.

²¹Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²¹Wehe dir, Chorazin, wehe dir, Bethsaida! Denn wenn zu Tyrus und Sidon die Taten geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind, so hätten sie längst im Sack und in der Asche Buße getan.

²²But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

²²Doch ich sage euch, es wird Tyrus und Zidon erträglicher gehen am Tage des Gerichts als euch!

²³And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

²³Und du, Kapernaum, die du bis zum Himmel erhoben bist, du wirst bis zur Hölle hinabgeworfen werden. Denn wenn zu Sodom die Taten geschehen wären, die bei dir geschehen sind, es stünde noch heutzutage!

²⁴But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

²⁴Doch ich sage euch, es wird dem Lande Sodom erträglicher gehen am Tage des Gerichts als dir!

²⁵At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

²⁵Zu jener Zeit hob Jesus an und sprach: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, daß du solches den Weisen und Klugen verborgen und es den Unmündigen offenbart hast!

²⁶Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

²⁶Ja, Vater, denn so ist es wohlgefällig gewesen vor dir.

²⁷All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

²⁷Alles ist mir von meinem Vater übergeben worden, und niemand erkennt den Sohn, als nur der Vater; und niemand erkennt den Vater, als nur der Sohn und wem der Sohn es offenbaren will.

²⁸Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²⁸Kommet her zu mir alle, die ihr mühselig und beladen seid, so will ich euch erquicken!

²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

²⁹Nehmet auf euch mein Joch und lernet von mir; denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig; so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen;

³⁰For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

³⁰denn mein Joch ist sanft und meine Last ist leicht!
