¹And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.

¹Maka penduduk Kiryat-Yearim mengambil Peti Perjanjian TUHAN itu lalu membawanya ke dalam rumah orang yang bernama Abinadab; rumah itu terletak di atas bukit. Kemudian mereka mentahbiskan Eleazar anak Abinadab, untuk menjaga Peti Perjanjian itu.

²And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

²Lama juga Peti Perjanjian TUHAN itu tinggal di Kiryat-Yearim, kira-kira dua puluh tahun. Selama waktu itu seluruh umat Israel berseru kepada TUHAN meminta tolong.

³And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

³Lalu berkatalah Samuel kepada umat Israel, "Kalau kamu hendak kembali kepada TUHAN dan menyembah Dia dengan sepenuh hatimu, haruslah kamu membuang semua dewa asing dan patung Dewi Asytoret. Serahkanlah dirimu sama sekali kepada TUHAN dan berbakti kepada-Nya saja, maka kamu akan dibebaskan-Nya dari orang Filistin."

⁴Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

⁴Jadi orang Israel membuang patung-patung Dewa Baal dan patung Dewi Asytoret, lalu mengabdi kepada TUHAN saja.

⁵And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

⁵Setelah itu berkatalah Samuel, "Kumpulkanlah seluruh bangsa Israel di Mizpa, maka aku akan berdoa kepada TUHAN untuk kamu."

⁶And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

⁶Lalu berkumpullah mereka semua di Mizpa. Mereka menimba air lalu menuangkannya sebagai persembahan kepada TUHAN, selanjutnya mereka berpuasa sepanjang hari itu. Kata mereka, "Kami telah berdosa kepada TUHAN." (Di Mizpa itu Samuel mulai menyelesaikan perkara-perkara perselisihan orang Israel.)

⁷And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

⁷Ketika orang Filistin mendengar bahwa orang Israel telah berkumpul di Mizpa, kelima raja Filistin berangkat ke sana dengan tentara mereka untuk menyerang orang Israel. Orang Israel mendengar hal itu lalu menjadi takut.

⁸And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

⁸Kata mereka kepada Samuel, "Janganlah berhenti berdoa kepada TUHAN Allah kita supaya kita diselamatkan-Nya dari orang Filistin."

⁹And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

⁹Karena itu Samuel memotong seekor anak domba muda, lalu mempersembahkannya sebagai kurban bakaran kepada TUHAN. Setelah itu ia berdoa supaya TUHAN menolong orang Israel, dan doanya itu dikabulkan.

¹⁰And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

¹⁰Ketika Samuel sedang mempersembahkan kurban bakaran itu, orang Filistin mulai menyerang; tetapi tepat pada saat itu TUHAN mengguntur dari langit ke atas mereka. Mereka menjadi kacau-balau lalu lari kebingungan.

¹¹And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.

¹¹Tentara Israel keluar dari Mizpa lalu mengejar orang Filistin itu hampir sejauh Bet-Kar, dan menghancurkan mereka.

¹²Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

¹²Setelah itu Samuel menegakkan sebuah batu, di perbatasan Mizpa dan Sen. Ia berkata, "TUHAN telah menolong kita sepenuhnya." --lalu batu itu dinamainya "Batu Pertolongan".

¹³So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

¹³Demikianlah orang Filistin dikalahkan. TUHAN tidak mengizinkan mereka memasuki wilayah Israel lagi, selama Samuel masih hidup.

¹⁴And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

¹⁴Semua kota Israel yang telah ditaklukkan oleh orang Filistin, mulai dari Ekron sampai Gat, dikembalikan kepada Israel. Jadi Israel mendapat kembali seluruh wilayahnya. Orang Israel dan orang Amori pun hidup dengan damai.

¹⁵And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

¹⁵Samuel memerintah Israel seumur hidupnya.

¹⁶And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

¹⁶Setiap tahun ia mengadakan perjalanan keliling ke Betel, Gilgal, dan Mizpa. Dan di tempat-tempat itu ia menyelesaikan perkara-perkara perselisihan.

¹⁷And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

¹⁷Selalu sesudah itu ia pulang ke rumahnya di Rama. Di sana ia menjadi hakim orang Israel dan juga mendirikan sebuah mezbah bagi TUHAN.
