¹When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

¹"Sesudah bangsa-bangsa itu dibinasakan TUHAN Allahmu dan negerinya diberikan kepadamu, dan sesudah kamu mengambil kota-kota dan rumah-rumah mereka dan diam di situ,

²Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

²wilayah itu harus kamu bagi menjadi tiga bagian, masing-masing dengan sebuah kota suaka yang mudah dicapai supaya setiap pembunuh dapat melarikan diri ke sana.

³Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

³(19:2)

⁴And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbor ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

⁴Kalau seseorang dengan tidak sengaja telah membunuh orang lain yang bukan musuhnya, ia dapat melarikan diri ke salah satu kota itu dan boleh tinggal hidup.

⁵As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbor, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:

⁵Misalnya dua orang bersama-sama masuk hutan untuk menebang kayu. Sementara yang seorang menebang pohon, kepala kapaknya terlepas dari gagangnya dan kena temannya sehingga tewas. Maka orang yang telah membunuh tanpa sengaja itu tidak bersalah dan boleh lari ke salah satu dari tiga kota suaka itu supaya selamat. Sekiranya ada satu kota suaka saja, mungkin jaraknya ke sana terlalu jauh, dan anggota keluarga yang bertanggung jawab untuk membalas pembunuhan itu dapat mengejar dia dan dalam kemarahannya membunuh orang yang tak bersalah.

⁶Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

⁶(19:5)

⁷Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

⁷Sebab itu aku memerintahkan kamu untuk menyediakan tiga kota.

⁸And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

⁸Apabila TUHAN Allahmu sudah memperluas wilayahmu seperti yang dijanjikan-Nya kepada leluhurmu, dan seluruh negeri itu sudah diberikan kepadamu,

⁹If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:

⁹kamu harus memilih tiga kota suaka lagi. (Negeri itu akan diberikan kepadamu kalau kamu melakukan segala sesuatu yang saya perintahkan kepadamu hari ini, dan kalau kamu mencintai TUHAN Allahmu dan hidup menurut ajaran-Nya.)

¹⁰That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

¹⁰Lakukanlah itu supaya kamu jangan berdosa karena membiarkan orang yang tak bersalah dibunuh di negeri yang diberikan TUHAN Allahmu kepadamu."

¹¹But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

¹¹"Tetapi lain halnya kalau seseorang menghadang musuhnya dan dengan sengaja dan rasa benci membunuh dia, lalu melarikan diri ke salah satu kota suaka untuk mendapat perlindungan.

¹²Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

¹²Dalam hal itu para pemimpin kotanya harus memanggil orang itu lalu menyerahkan dia kepada anggota keluarga yang bertanggung jawab untuk membalas pembunuhan itu, supaya ia dapat dibunuh.

¹³Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

¹³Jangan menaruh kasihan kepadanya. Bebaskanlah Israel dari pembunuh itu, supaya kamu sejahtera."

¹⁴Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

¹⁴"Apabila kamu sudah sampai di negeri yang diberikan TUHAN Allahmu kepadamu, janganlah menggeser batas tanah tetanggamu yang ditentukan di zaman dahulu."

¹⁵One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

¹⁵"Seorang saksi saja tidak cukup untuk menyatakan seorang tertuduh bersalah; sekurang-kurangnya dua saksi diperlukan untuk hal itu.

¹⁶If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

¹⁶Kalau seseorang mau menjatuhkan orang lain dengan tuduhan palsu di pengadilan, maka

¹⁷Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

¹⁷kedua-duanya harus pergi ke tempat ibadat yang ditentukan TUHAN supaya diadili oleh para imam dan hakim yang sedang bertugas.

¹⁸And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

¹⁸Para hakim harus menyelidiki perkara itu dengan teliti, dan kalau ternyata orang itu memfitnah sesamanya orang Israel,

¹⁹Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

¹⁹ia harus menjalani hukuman yang dimaksudkan untuk lawannya itu. Dengan demikian kamu memberantas kejahatan itu.

²⁰And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

²⁰Semua orang akan mendengar tentang hal itu dan menjadi takut, sehingga tak ada lagi yang berbuat sejahat itu.

²¹And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

²¹Jangan kasihan dalam perkara-perkara semacam itu. Hukumannya berupa: Nyawa ganti nyawa, mata ganti mata, gigi ganti gigi, tangan ganti tangan dan kaki ganti kaki."
