¹And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

¹Sementara bangsa Israel tinggal di Lembah Sitim, orang-orang lelaki mereka mulai berzinah dengan wanita-wanita Moab yang ada di situ.

²And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

²Wanita-wanita itu mengajak mereka ke pesta-pesta kurban untuk menghormati ilah mereka. Orang Israel juga ikut makan kurban itu dan menyembah ilah orang Moab.

³And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

³Karena orang Israel menyembah Baal di Peor, TUHAN marah kepada mereka dan berkata kepada Musa,

⁴And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

⁴"Tangkaplah semua orang yang mengepalai bangsa itu dan bunuhlah mereka di depan umum sebagai pelaksanaan perintah-Ku, supaya Aku tidak marah lagi kepada bangsa itu."

⁵And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

⁵Kemudian Musa berkata kepada hakim-hakim Israel, "Kamu masing-masing harus membunuh semua orang dalam sukumu yang telah menyembah Baal di Peor."

⁶And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

⁶Ketika Musa dan seluruh umat sedang meratap di pintu Kemah TUHAN, mereka melihat seorang Israel membawa seorang wanita Midian masuk ke dalam kemahnya.

⁷And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

⁷Waktu Pinehas, anak Eleazar, cucu Imam Harun melihat hal itu, ia bangkit dan meninggalkan perkumpulan itu. Diambilnya sebuah tombak

⁸And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

⁸lalu dikejarnya laki-laki dan wanita itu ke dalam kemah. Kedua orang itu ditikamnya dengan tombak itu maka berhentilah bencana yang sedang berkecamuk di Israel itu.

⁹And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

⁹Tetapi sementara itu yang mati sudah ada 24.000 orang.

¹⁰And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁰Lalu TUHAN berkata kepada Musa,

¹¹Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

¹¹"Pinehas anak Eleazar, cucu Imam Harun, dengan giat membela kehormatan-Ku di tengah-tengah orang Israel, sehingga kemarahan-Ku reda dan Aku tidak jadi membinasakan bangsa itu.

¹²Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

¹²Jadi katakanlah kepada Pinehas bahwa Aku membuat suatu perjanjian dengan dia.

¹³And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

¹³Dia dan keturunannya Kutetapkan sebagai imam untuk selama-lamanya, karena dia dengan begitu giat telah membela Aku, Allahnya, dan telah mengadakan perdamaian bagi dosa orang Israel."

¹⁴Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

¹⁴Orang Israel yang dibunuh bersama wanita Midian itu bernama Zimri, anak Salu, kepala suatu keluarga dari suku Simeon.

¹⁵And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

¹⁵Wanita itu bernama Kozbi; ia anak Zur, seorang kepala kaum di Midian.

¹⁶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁶TUHAN memberi perintah ini kepada Musa,

¹⁷Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

¹⁷"Lawanlah orang Midian, dan binasakanlah mereka

¹⁸For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.

¹⁸karena kejahatan yang telah mereka rencanakan terhadap kamu di Peor, dan karena Kozbi anak seorang kepala kaum di Midian. Kozbi itu wanita yang mati dibunuh waktu terjadi bencana karena peristiwa di Peor."
