¹And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

¹時にサタンが起ってイスラエルに敵し、ダビデを動かしてイスラエルを数えさせようとした。

²And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

²ダビデはヨアブと軍の将校たちに言った、「あなたがたは行って、ベエルシバからダンまでのイスラエルを数え、その数を調べてわたしに知らせなさい」。

³And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

³ヨアブは言った、「それがどのくらいあっても、どうか主がその民を百倍に増されるように。しかし王わが主よ、彼らは皆あなたのしもべではありませんか。どうしてわが主はこの事を求められるのですか。どうしてイスラエルに罪を得させられるのですか」。

⁴Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

⁴しかし王の言葉がヨアブに勝ったので、ヨアブは出て行って、イスラエルをあまねく行き巡り、エルサレムに帰って来た。

⁵And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

⁵そしてヨアブは民の総数をダビデに告げた。すなわちイスラエルにはつるぎを抜く者が百十万人、ユダにはつるぎを抜く者が四十七万人あった。

⁶But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

⁶しかしヨアブは王の命令を快しとしなかったので、レビとベニヤミンとはその中に数えなかった。

⁷And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

⁷この事が神の目に悪かったので、神はイスラエルを撃たれた。

⁸And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

⁸そこでダビデは神に言った、「わたしはこの事を行って大いに罪を犯しました。しかし今どうか、しもべの罪を除いてください。わたしは非常に愚かなことをいたしました」。

⁹And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

⁹主はダビデの先見者ガデに告げて言われた、

¹⁰Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

¹⁰「行ってダビデに言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、わたしは三つの事を示す。あなたはその一つを選びなさい。わたしはそれをあなたに行おう』と」。

¹¹So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

¹¹ガデはダビデのもとに来て言った、「主はこう仰せられます、『あなたは選びなさい。

¹²Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

¹²すなわち三年のききんか、あるいは三月の間、あなたのあだの前に敗れて、敵のつるぎに追いつかれるか、あるいは三日の間、主のつるぎすなわち疫病がこの国にあって、主の使がイスラエルの全領域にわたって滅ぼすことをするか』。いま、わたしがどういう答をわたしをつかわしたものになすべきか決めなさい」。

¹³And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

¹³ダビデはガデに言った、「わたしは非常に悩んでいるが、主のあわれみは大きいゆえ、わたしを主の手に陥らせてください。しかしわたしを人の手に陥らせないでください」。

¹⁴So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

¹⁴そこで主はイスラエルに疫病を下されたので、イスラエルびとのうち七万人が倒れた。

¹⁵And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹⁵神はまたみ使をエルサレムにつかわして、これを滅ぼそうとされたが、み使がまさに滅ぼそうとしたとき、主は見られて、この災を悔い、その滅ぼすみ使に言われた、「もうじゅうぶんだ。今あなたの手をとどめよ」。そのとき主の使はエブスびとオルナンの打ち場のかたわらに立っていた。

¹⁶And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

¹⁶ダビデが目をあげて見ると、主の使が地と天の間に立って、手に抜いたつるぎをもち、エルサレムの上にさし伸べていたので、ダビデと長老たちは荒布を着て、ひれ伏した。

¹⁷And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

¹⁷そしてダビデは神に言った、「民を数えよと命じたのはわたしではありませんか。罪を犯し、悪い事をしたのはわたしです。しかしこれらの羊は何をしましたか。わが神、主よ、どうぞあなたの手をわたしと、わたしの父の家にむけてください。しかし災をあなたの民に下さないでください」。

¹⁸Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹⁸時に主の使はガデに命じ、ダビデが上って行って、エブスびとオルナンの打ち場で主のために一つの祭壇を築くように告げさせた。

¹⁹And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

¹⁹そこでダビデはガデが主の名をもって告げた言葉に従って上って行った。

²⁰And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

²⁰そのときオルナンは麦を打っていたが、ふりかえってみ使を見たので、ともにいた彼の四人の子は身をかくした。

²¹And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

²¹ダビデがオルナンに近づくと、オルナンは目を上げてダビデを見、打ち場から出て来て地にひれ伏してダビデを拝した。

²²Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

²²ダビデはオルナンに言った、「この打ち場の所をわたしに与えなさい。わたしは災が民に下るのをとどめるため、そこに主のために一つの祭壇を築きます。あなたは、そのじゅうぶんな価をとってこれをわたしに与えなさい」。

²³And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

²³オルナンはダビデに言った、「どうぞこれをお取りなさい。そして王わが主の良しと見られるところを行いなさい。わたしは牛を燔祭のために、打穀機をたきぎのために、麦を素祭のためにささげます。わたしは皆これをささげます」。

²⁴And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

²⁴ダビデ王はオルナンに言った、「いいえ、わたしはじゅうぶんな代価を払ってこれを買います。わたしは主のためにあなたのものを取ることをしません。また、費えなしに燔祭をささげることをいたしません」。

²⁵So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

²⁵それでダビデはその所のために金六百シケルをはかって、オルナンに払った。

²⁶And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

²⁶こうしてダビデは主のために、その所に一つの祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげて、主を呼んだ。主は燔祭の祭壇の上に天から火を下して答えられた。

²⁷And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

²⁷また主がみ使に命じられたので、彼はつるぎをさやにおさめた。

²⁸At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

²⁸その時ダビデは主がエブスびとオルナンの打ち場で自分に答えられたのを見たので、その所で犠牲をささげた。

²⁹For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

²⁹モーセが荒野で造った主の幕屋と燔祭の祭壇とは、その時ギベオンの高き所にあったからである。しかしダビデはその前へ行って神に求めることができなかった。彼が主の使のつるぎを恐れたからである。

³⁰But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
