¹Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings,

²As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

²今生れたばかりの乳飲み子のように、混じりけのない霊の乳を慕い求めなさい。それによっておい育ち、救に入るようになるためである。

³If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

³あなたがたは、主が恵み深いかたであることを、すでに味わい知ったはずである。

⁴To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

⁴主は、人には捨てられたが、神にとっては選ばれた尊い生ける石である。

⁵Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

⁵この主のみもとにきて、あなたがたも、それぞれ生ける石となって、霊の家に築き上げられ、聖なる祭司となって、イエス・キリストにより、神によろこばれる霊のいけにえを、ささげなさい。

⁶Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

⁶聖書にこう書いてある、「見よ、わたしはシオンに、選ばれた尊い石、隅のかしら石を置く。それにより頼む者は、決して、失望に終ることがない」。

⁷Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

⁷この石は、より頼んでいるあなたがたには尊いものであるが、不信仰な人々には「家造りらの捨てた石で、隅のかしら石となったもの」、

⁸And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

⁹But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

¹⁰Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

¹⁰あなたがたは、以前は神の民でなかったが、いまは神の民であり、以前は、あわれみを受けたことのない者であったが、いまは、あわれみを受けた者となっている。

¹¹Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

¹¹愛する者たちよ。あなたがたに勧める。あなたがたは、この世の旅人であり寄留者であるから、たましいに戦いをいどむ肉の欲を避けなさい。

¹²Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

¹²異邦人の中にあって、りっぱな行いをしなさい。そうすれば、彼らは、あなたがたを悪人呼ばわりしていても、あなたがたのりっぱなわざを見て、かえって、おとずれの日に神をあがめるようになろう。

¹³Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

¹³あなたがたは、すべて人の立てた制度に、主のゆえに従いなさい。主権者としての王であろうと、

¹⁴Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

¹⁴あるいは、悪を行う者を罰し善を行う者を賞するために、王からつかわされた長官であろうと、これに従いなさい。

¹⁵For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

¹⁵善を行うことによって、愚かな人々の無知な発言を封じるのは、神の御旨なのである。

¹⁶As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

¹⁶自由人にふさわしく行動しなさい。ただし、自由をば悪を行う口実として用いず、神の僕にふさわしく行動しなさい。

¹⁷Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

¹⁷すべての人をうやまい、兄弟たちを愛し、神をおそれ、王を尊びなさい。

¹⁸Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

¹⁸僕たる者よ。心からのおそれをもって、主人に仕えなさい。善良で寛容な主人だけにでなく、気むずかしい主人にも、そうしなさい。

¹⁹For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

¹⁹もしだれかが、不当な苦しみを受けても、神を仰いでその苦痛を耐え忍ぶなら、それはよみせられることである。

²⁰For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

²⁰悪いことをして打ちたたかれ、それを忍んだとしても、なんの手柄になるのか。しかし善を行って苦しみを受け、しかもそれを耐え忍んでいるとすれば、これこそ神によみせられることである。

²¹For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

²¹あなたがたは、実に、そうするようにと召されたのである。キリストも、あなたがたのために苦しみを受け、御足の跡を踏み従うようにと、模範を残されたのである。

²²Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

²²キリストは罪を犯さず、その口には偽りがなかった。

²³Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

²³ののしられても、ののしりかえさず、苦しめられても、おびやかすことをせず、正しいさばきをするかたに、いっさいをゆだねておられた。

²⁴Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

²⁴さらに、わたしたちが罪に死に、義に生きるために、十字架にかかって、わたしたちの罪をご自分の身に負われた。その傷によって、あなたがたは、いやされたのである。あなたがたは、羊のようにさ迷っていたが、今は、たましいの牧者であり監督であるかたのもとに、たち帰ったのである。

²⁵For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
