¹This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

¹「もし人が監督の職を望むなら、それは良い仕事を願うことである」とは正しい言葉である。

²A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

²さて、監督は、非難のない人で、ひとりの妻の夫であり、自らを制し、慎み深く、礼儀正しく、旅人をもてなし、よく教えることができ、

³Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

³酒を好まず、乱暴でなく、寛容であって、人と争わず、金に淡泊で、

⁴One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

⁴自分の家をよく治め、謹厳であって、子供たちを従順な者に育てている人でなければならない。

⁵(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

⁵自分の家を治めることも心得ていない人が、どうして神の教会を預かることができようか。

⁶Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁶彼はまた、信者になって間もないものであってはならない。そうであると、高慢になって、悪魔と同じ審判を受けるかも知れない。

⁷Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁷さらにまた、教会外の人々にもよく思われている人でなければならない。そうでないと、そしりを受け、悪魔のわなにかかるであろう。

⁸Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

⁸それと同様に、執事も謹厳であって、二枚舌を使わず、大酒を飲まず、利をむさぼらず、

⁹Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

⁹きよい良心をもって、信仰の奥義を保っていなければならない。

¹⁰And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

¹⁰彼らはまず調べられて、不都合なことがなかったなら、それから執事の職につかすべきである。

¹¹Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

¹¹女たちも、同様に謹厳で、他人をそしらず、自らを制し、すべてのことに忠実でなければならない。

¹²Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

¹²執事はひとりの妻の夫であって、子供と自分の家とをよく治める者でなければならない。

¹³For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹³執事の職をよくつとめた者は、良い地位を得、さらにキリスト・イエスを信じる信仰による、大いなる確信を得るであろう。

¹⁴These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

¹⁴わたしは、あなたの所にすぐ行きたいと望みながら、この手紙を書いている。

¹⁵But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

¹⁵万一わたしが遅れる場合には、神の家でいかに生活すべきかを、あなたに知ってもらいたいからである。神の家というのは、生ける神の教会のことであって、それは真理の柱、真理の基礎なのである。確かに偉大なのは、この信心の奥義である、「キリストは肉において現れ、霊において義とせられ、御使たちに見られ、諸国民の間に伝えられ、世界の中で信じられ、栄光のうちに天に上げられた」。

¹⁶And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

¹⁶確かに偉大なのは、この信心の奥義である、「キリストは肉において現れ、霊において義とせられ、御使たちに見られ、諸国民の間に伝えられ、世界の中で信じられ、栄光のうちに天に上げられた」。
