¹Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?

¹わたしたちは、またもや、自己推薦をし始めているのだろうか。それとも、ある人々のように、あなたがたにあてた、あるいは、あなたがたからの推薦状が必要なのだろうか。

²Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

²わたしたちの推薦状は、あなたがたなのである。それは、わたしたちの心にしるされていて、すべての人に知られ、かつ読まれている。

³Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

³そして、あなたがたは自分自身が、わたしたちから送られたキリストの手紙であって、墨によらず生ける神の霊によって書かれ、石の板にではなく人の心の板に書かれたものであることを、はっきりとあらわしている。

⁴And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

⁴こうした確信を、わたしたちはキリストにより神に対していだいている。

⁵Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

⁵もちろん、自分自身で事を定める力が自分にある、と言うのではない。わたしたちのこうした力は、神からきている。

⁶Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

⁶神はわたしたちに力を与えて、新しい契約に仕える者とされたのである。それは、文字に仕える者ではなく、霊に仕える者である。文字は人を殺し、霊は人を生かす。

⁷But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

⁷もし石に彫りつけた文字による死の務が栄光のうちに行われ、そのためイスラエルの子らは、モーセの顔の消え去るべき栄光のゆえに、その顔を見つめることができなかったとすれば、

⁸How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

⁸まして霊の務は、はるかに栄光あるものではなかろうか。

⁹For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

⁹もし罪を宣告する務が栄光あるものだとすれば、義を宣告する務は、はるかに栄光に満ちたものである。

¹⁰For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

¹⁰そして、すでに栄光を受けたものも、この場合、はるかにまさった栄光のまえに、その栄光を失ったのである。

¹¹For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

¹¹もし消え去るべきものが栄光をもって現れたのなら、まして永存すべきものは、もっと栄光のあるべきものである。

¹²Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:

¹²こうした望みをいだいているので、わたしたちは思いきって大胆に語り、

¹³And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

¹³そしてモーセが、消え去っていくものの最後をイスラエルの子らに見られまいとして、顔におおいをかけたようなことはしない。

¹⁴But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

¹⁴実際、彼らの思いは鈍くなっていた。今日に至るまで、彼らが古い契約を朗読する場合、その同じおおいが取り去られないままで残っている。それは、キリストにあってはじめて取り除かれるのである。

¹⁵But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

¹⁵今日に至るもなお、モーセの書が朗読されるたびに、おおいが彼らの心にかかっている。

¹⁶Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

¹⁶しかし主に向く時には、そのおおいは取り除かれる。

¹⁷Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

¹⁷主は霊である。そして、主の霊のあるところには、自由がある。わたしたちはみな、顔おおいなしに、主の栄光を鏡に映すように見つつ、栄光から栄光へと、主と同じ姿に変えられていく。これは霊なる主の働きによるのである。

¹⁸But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

¹⁸わたしたちはみな、顔おおいなしに、主の栄光を鏡に映すように見つつ、栄光から栄光へと、主と同じ姿に変えられていく。これは霊なる主の働きによるのである。
