¹And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

¹ヒゼキヤ王はこれを聞いて、衣を裂き、荒布を身にまとって主に宮に入り、

²And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

²宮内卿エリアキムと書記官セブナおよび祭司のうちの年長者たちに荒布をまとわせて、アモツの子預言者イザヤのもとにつかわした。

³And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

³彼らはイザヤに言った、「ヒゼキヤはこう申されます、『きょうは悩みと、懲しめと、はずかしめの日です。胎児がまさに生れようとして、これを産み出す力がないのです。

⁴It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.

⁴あなたの神、主はラブシャケがその主君アッスリヤの王につかわされて、生ける神をそしったもろもろの言葉を聞かれたかもしれません。そしてあなたの神、主はその聞いた言葉をとがめられるかもしれません。それゆえ、この残っている者のために祈をささげてください』」。

⁵So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

⁵ヒゼキヤ王の家来たちがイザヤのもとに来たとき、

⁶And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

⁶イザヤは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの主君にこう言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、アッスリヤの王の家来たちが、わたしをそしった言葉を聞いて恐れるには及ばない。

⁷Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumor, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

⁷見よ、わたしは一つの霊を彼らのうちに送って、一つのうわさを聞かせ、彼を自分の国へ帰らせて、自分の国でつるぎに倒れさせるであろう』」。

⁸So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

⁸ラブシャケは引き返して、アッスリヤの王がリブナを攻めているところへ行った。彼が王のラキシを去ったことを聞いたからである。

⁹And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,

⁹この時アッスリヤの王はエチオピヤの王テルハカについて、「彼はあなたと戦うために出てきた」と人々がいうのを聞いたので、再び使者をヒゼキヤにつかわして言った、

¹⁰Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹⁰「ユダの王ヒゼキヤにこう言いなさい、『あなたは、エルサレムはアッスリヤの王の手に陥ることはない、と言うあなたの信頼する神に欺かれてはならない。

¹¹Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?

¹¹あなたはアッスリヤの王たちがもろもろの国々にした事、彼らを全く滅ぼした事を聞いている。どうしてあなたが救われることができようか。

¹²Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar?

¹²わたしの父たちはゴザン、ハラン、レゼフ、およびテラサルにいたエデンの人々を滅ぼしたが、その国々の神々は彼らを救ったか。

¹³Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?

¹³ハマテの王、アルパデの王、セパルワイムの町の王、ヘナの王およびイワの王はどこにいるのか』」。

¹⁴And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.

¹⁴ヒゼキヤは使者の手から手紙を受け取ってそれを読み、主の宮にのぼっていって、主の前にそれをひろげ、

¹⁵And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

¹⁵そしてヒゼキヤは主の前に祈って言った、「ケルビムの上に座しておられるイスラエルの神、主よ、地のすべての国のうちで、ただあなただけが神でいらせられます。あなたは天と地を造られました。

¹⁶LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.

¹⁶主よ、耳を傾けて聞いてください。主よ、目を開いてごらんください。セナケリブが生ける神をそしるために書き送った言葉をお聞きください。

¹⁷Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,

¹⁷主よ、まことにアッスリヤの王たちはもろもろの民とその国々を滅ぼし、

¹⁸And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.

¹⁸またその神々を火に投げ入れました。それらは神ではなく、人の手の作ったもので、木や石だから滅ぼされたのです。

¹⁹Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.

¹⁹われわれの神、主よ、どうぞ、今われわれを彼の手から救い出してください。そうすれば地の国々は皆、主であるあなただけが神でいらせられることを知るようになるでしょう」。

²⁰Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

²⁰その時アモツの子イザヤは人をつかわしてヒゼキヤに言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、『アッスリヤの王セナケリブについてあなたがわたしに祈ったことは聞いた』。

²¹This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

²¹主が彼について語られた言葉はこうである、『処女であるシオンの娘はあなたを侮り、あなたをあざける。エルサレムの娘はあなたのうしろで頭を振る。

²²Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

²²あなたはだれをそしり、だれをののしったのか。あなたはだれにむかって声をあげ、目を高くあげたのか。イスラエルの聖者にむかってしたのだ。

²³By thy messengers thou hast reproached the LORD, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.

²³あなたは使者をもって主をそしって言った、「わたしは多くの戦車をひきいて山々の頂にのぼり、レバノンの奥に行き、たけの高い香柏と最も良いいとすぎを切り倒し、またその果の野営地に行き、その密林にはいった。

²⁴I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.

²⁴わたしは井戸を掘って外国の水を飲んだ。わたしは足の裏で、エジプトのすべての川を踏みからした」。

²⁵Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.

²⁵あなたは聞かなかったか、昔わたしがこれを定めたことを。堅固な町々をあなたが荒塚とすることも、いにしえの日からわたしが計画して今これをおこなうのだ。

²⁶Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

²⁶そのうちに住む民は力弱くおののき、恥をいだいて、野の草のように、青菜のようになり、育たないで枯れる屋根の草のようになった。

²⁷But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

²⁷わたしはあなたのすわること、出入りすること、わたしにむかって怒り叫んだことをも知っている。

²⁸Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

²⁸あなたがわたしにむかって怒り叫んだことと、あなたの高慢がわたしの耳にはいったため、わたしはあなたの鼻に輪をつけ、あなたの口にくつわをはめて、あなたをもときた道へ引きもどすであろう』。

²⁹And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.

²⁹『あなたに与えるしるしはこれである。すなわち、ことしは落ち穂からはえたものを食べ、二年目にはまたその落ち穂からはえたものを食べ、三年目には種をまき、刈り入れ、ぶどう畑を作ってその実を食べるであろう。

³⁰And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

³⁰ユダの家ののがれて残る者は再び下に根を張り、上に実を結ぶであろう。

³¹For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

³¹すなわち残る者がエルサレムから出てき、のがれた者がシオンの山から出て来るであろう。主の熱心がこれをされるであろう』。

³²Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.

³²それゆえ、主はアッスリヤの王について、こう仰せられる、『彼はこの町にこない、またここに矢を放たない、盾をもってその前に来ることなく、また塁を築いてこれを攻めることはない。

³³By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

³³彼は来た道を帰って、この町に、はいることはない。主がこれを言う。

³⁴For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

³⁴わたしは自分のため、またわたしのしもべダビデのためにこの町を守って、これを救うであろう』」。

³⁵And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

³⁵その夜、主の使が出て、アッスリヤの陣営で十八万五千人を撃ち殺した。人々が朝早く起きて見ると、彼らは皆、死体となっていた。

³⁶So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

³⁶アッスリヤの王セナケリブは立ち去り、帰って行ってニネベにいたが、その神ニスロクの神殿で礼拝していた時、その子アデランメレクとシャレゼルが、つるぎをもって彼を殺し、ともにアララテの地へ逃げて行った。そこでその子エサルハドンが代って王となった。

³⁷And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

³⁷その神ニスロクの神殿で礼拝していた時、その子アデランメレクとシャレゼルが、つるぎをもって彼を殺し、ともにアララテの地へ逃げて行った。そこでその子エサルハドンが代って王となった。
