³For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

³兄弟たちがきて、あなたが真理に生きていることを、あかししてくれたので、ひじょうに喜んでいる。事実、あなたは真理のうちを歩いているのである。

⁴I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

⁴わたしの子供たちが真理のうちを歩いていることを聞く以上に、大きい喜びはない。

⁵Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;

⁵愛する者よ。あなたが、兄弟たち、しかも旅先にある者につくしていることは、みな真実なわざである。

⁶Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

⁶彼らは、諸教会で、あなたの愛についてあかしをした。それらの人々を、神のみこころにかなうように送り出してくれたら、それは願わしいことである。

⁷Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

⁸We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

⁸それだから、わたしたちは、真理のための同労者となるように、こういう人々を助けねばならない。

⁹I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

⁹わたしは少しばかり教会に書きおくっておいたが、みんなのかしらになりたがっているデオテレペスが、わたしたちを受けいれてくれない。

¹⁰Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

¹⁰だから、わたしがそちらへ行った時、彼のしわざを指摘しようと思う。彼は口ぎたなくわたしたちをののしり、そればかりか、兄弟たちを受けいれようともせず、受けいれようとする人たちを妨げて、教会から追い出している。

¹¹Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

¹¹愛する者よ。悪にならわないで、善にならいなさい。善を行う者は神から出た者であり、悪を行う者は神を見たことのない者である。

¹²Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
