¹There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

¹さて、カイザリヤにコルネリオという名の人がいた。イタリヤ隊と呼ばれた部隊の百卒長で、

²A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

²信心深く、家族一同と共に神を敬い、民に数々の施しをなし、絶えず神に祈をしていた。

³He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

³ある日の午後三時ごろ、神の使が彼のところにきて、「コルネリオよ」と呼ぶのを、幻ではっきり見た。

⁴And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

⁴彼は御使を見つめていたが、恐ろしくなって、「主よ、なんでございますか」と言った。すると御使が言った、「あなたの祈や施しは神のみ前にとどいて、おぼえられている。

⁵And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

⁵ついては今、ヨッパに人をやって、ペテロと呼ばれるシモンという人を招きなさい。

⁶He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

⁶この人は、海べに家をもつ皮なめしシモンという者の客となっている」。

⁷And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

⁷このお告げをした御使が立ち去ったのち、コルネリオは、僕ふたりと、部下の中で信心深い兵卒ひとりとを呼び、

⁸And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁸いっさいの事を説明して聞かせ、ヨッパへ送り出した。

⁹On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

⁹翌日、この三人が旅をつづけて町の近くにきたころ、ペテロは祈をするため屋上にのぼった。時は昼の十二時ごろであった。

¹⁰And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

¹⁰彼は空腹をおぼえて、何か食べたいと思った。そして、人々が食事の用意をしている間に、夢心地になった。

¹¹And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

¹¹すると、天が開け、大きな布のような入れ物が、四すみをつるされて、地上に降りて来るのを見た。

¹²Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

¹²その中には、地上の四つ足や這うもの、また空の鳥など、各種の生きものがはいっていた。

¹³And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

¹³そして声が彼に聞えてきた、「ペテロよ。立って、それらをほふって食べなさい」。

¹⁴But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

¹⁴ペテロは言った、「主よ、それはできません。わたしは今までに、清くないもの、汚れたものは、何一つ食べたことがありません」。

¹⁵And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

¹⁵すると、声が二度目にかかってきた、「神がきよめたものを、清くないなどと言ってはならない」。

¹⁶This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

¹⁶こんなことが三度もあってから、その入れ物はすぐ天に引き上げられた。

¹⁷Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

¹⁷ペテロが、いま見た幻はなんの事だろうかと、ひとり思案にくれていると、ちょうどその時、コルネリオから送られた人たちが、シモンの家を尋ね当てて、その門口に立っていた。

¹⁸And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

¹⁸そして声をかけて、「ペテロと呼ばれるシモンというかたが、こちらにお泊まりではございませんか」と尋ねた。

¹⁹While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

¹⁹ペテロはなおも幻について、思いめぐらしていると、御霊が言った、「ごらんなさい、三人の人たちが、あなたを尋ねてきている。

²⁰Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

²⁰さあ、立って下に降り、ためらわないで、彼らと一緒に出かけるがよい。わたしが彼らをよこしたのである」。

²¹Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

²¹そこでペテロは、その人たちのところに降りて行って言った、「わたしがお尋ねのペテロです。どんなご用でおいでになったのですか」。

²²And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

²²彼らは答えた、「正しい人で、神を敬い、ユダヤの全国民に好感を持たれている百卒長コルネリオが、あなたを家に招いてお話を伺うようにとのお告げを、聖なる御使から受けましたので、参りました」。

²³Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

²³そこで、ペテロは、彼らを迎えて泊まらせた。翌日、ペテロは立って、彼らと連れだって出発した。ヨッパの兄弟たち数人も一緒に行った。

²⁴And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

²⁴その次の日に、一行はカイザリヤに着いた。コルネリオは親族や親しい友人たちを呼び集めて、待っていた。

²⁵And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

²⁵ペテロがいよいよ到着すると、コルネリオは出迎えて、彼の足もとにひれ伏して拝した。

²⁶But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

²⁶するとペテロは、彼を引き起して言った、「お立ちなさい。わたしも同じ人間です」。

²⁷And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

²⁷それから共に話しながら、へやにはいって行くと、そこには、すでに大ぜいの人が集まっていた。

²⁸And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

²⁸ペテロは彼らに言った、「あなたがたが知っているとおり、ユダヤ人が他国の人と交際したり、出入りしたりすることは、禁じられています。ところが、神は、どんな人間をも清くないとか、汚れているとか言ってはならないと、わたしにお示しになりました。

²⁹Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

²⁹お招きにあずかった時、少しもためらわずに参ったのは、そのためなのです。そこで伺いますが、どういうわけで、わたしを招いてくださったのですか」。

³⁰And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

³⁰これに対してコルネリオが答えた、「四日前、ちょうどこの時刻に、わたしが自宅で午後三時の祈をしていますと、突然、輝いた衣を着た人が、前に立って申しました、

³¹And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

³¹『コルネリオよ、あなたの祈は聞きいれられ、あなたの施しは神のみ前におぼえられている。

³²Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

³²そこでヨッパに人を送ってペテロと呼ばれるシモンを招きなさい。その人は皮なめしシモンの海沿いの家に泊まっている』。

³³Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

³³それで、早速あなたをお呼びしたのです。ようこそおいで下さいました。今わたしたちは、主があなたにお告げになったことを残らず伺おうとして、みな神のみ前にまかり出ているのです」。

³⁴Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

³⁴そこでペテロは口を開いて言った、「神は人をかたよりみないかたで、

³⁵But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

³⁵神を敬い義を行う者はどの国民でも受けいれて下さることが、ほんとうによくわかってきました。

³⁶The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

³⁶あなたがたは、神がすべての者の主なるイエス・キリストによって平和の福音を宣べ伝えて、イスラエルの子らにお送り下さった御言をご存じでしょう。

³⁷That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

³⁷それは、ヨハネがバプテスマを説いた後、ガリラヤから始まってユダヤ全土にひろまった福音を述べたものです。

³⁸How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

³⁸神はナザレのイエスに聖霊と力とを注がれました。このイエスは、神が共におられるので、よい働きをしながら、また悪魔に押えつけられている人々をことごとくいやしながら、巡回されました。

³⁹And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

³⁹わたしたちは、イエスがこうしてユダヤ人の地やエルサレムでなさったすべてのことの証人であります。人々はこのイエスを木にかけて殺したのです。

⁴⁰Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

⁴⁰しかし神はイエスを三日目によみがえらせ、

⁴¹Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

⁴¹全部の人々にではなかったが、わたしたち証人としてあらかじめ選ばれた者たちに現れるようにして下さいました。わたしたちは、イエスが死人の中から復活された後、共に飲食しました。

⁴²And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

⁴²それから、イエスご自身が生者と死者との審判者として神に定められたかたであることを、人々に宣べ伝え、またあかしするようにと、神はわたしたちにお命じになったのです。

⁴³To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

⁴³預言者たちもみな、イエスを信じる者はことごとく、その名によって罪のゆるしが受けられると、あかしをしています」。

⁴⁴While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

⁴⁴ペテロがこれらの言葉をまだ語り終えないうちに、それを聞いていたみんなの人たちに、聖霊がくだった。

⁴⁵And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

⁴⁵割礼を受けている信者で、ペテロについてきた人たちは、異邦人たちにも聖霊の賜物が注がれたのを見て、驚いた。

⁴⁶For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

⁴⁶それは、彼らが異言を語って神をさんびしているのを聞いたからである。そこで、ペテロが言い出した、

⁴⁷Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

⁴⁷「この人たちがわたしたちと同じように聖霊を受けたからには、彼らに水でバプテスマを授けるのを、だれがこばみ得ようか」。こう言って、ペテロはその人々に命じて、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマを受けさせた。それから、彼らはペテロに願って、なお数日のあいだ滞在してもらった。

⁴⁸And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

⁴⁸こう言って、ペテロはその人々に命じて、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマを受けさせた。それから、彼らはペテロに願って、なお数日のあいだ滞在してもらった。
