¹Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

¹そのころ、ヘロデ王は教会のある者たちに圧迫の手をのばし、

²And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

²ヨハネの兄弟ヤコブをつるぎで切り殺した。

³And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

³そして、それがユダヤ人たちの意にかなったのを見て、さらにペテロをも捕えにかかった。それは除酵祭の時のことであった。

⁴And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

⁴ヘロデはペテロを捕えて獄に投じ、四人一組の兵卒四組に引き渡して、見張りをさせておいた。過越の祭のあとで、彼を民衆の前に引き出すつもりであったのである。

⁵Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

⁵こうして、ペテロは獄に入れられていた。教会では、彼のために熱心な祈が神にささげられた。

⁶And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

⁶ヘロデが彼を引き出そうとしていたその夜、ペテロは二重の鎖につながれ、ふたりの兵卒の間に置かれて眠っていた。番兵たちは戸口で獄を見張っていた。

⁷And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

⁷すると、突然、主の使がそばに立ち、光が獄内を照した。そして御使はペテロのわき腹をつついて起し、「早く起きあがりなさい」と言った。すると鎖が彼の両手から、はずれ落ちた。

⁸And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

⁸御使が「帯をしめ、くつをはきなさい」と言ったので、彼はそのとおりにした。それから「上着を着て、ついてきなさい」と言われたので、

⁹And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

⁹ペテロはついて出て行った。彼には御使のしわざが現実のこととは考えられず、ただ幻を見ているように思われた。

¹⁰When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

¹⁰彼らは第一、第二の衛所を通りすぎて、町に抜ける鉄門のところに来ると、それがひとりでに開いたので、そこを出て一つの通路に進んだとたんに、御使は彼を離れ去った。

¹¹And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

¹¹その時ペテロはわれにかえって言った、「今はじめて、ほんとうのことがわかった。主が御使をつかわして、ヘロデの手から、またユダヤ人たちの待ちもうけていたあらゆる災から、わたしを救い出して下さったのだ」。

¹²And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

¹²ペテロはこうとわかってから、マルコと呼ばれているヨハネの母マリヤの家に行った。その家には大ぜいの人が集まって祈っていた。

¹³And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

¹³彼が門の戸をたたいたところ、ロダという女中が取次ぎに出てきたが、

¹⁴And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

¹⁴ペテロの声だとわかると、喜びのあまり、門をあけもしないで家に駆け込み、ペテロが門口に立っていると報告した。

¹⁵And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

¹⁵人々は「あなたは気が狂っている」と言ったが、彼女は自分の言うことに間違いはないと、言い張った。そこで彼らは「それでは、ペテロの御使だろう」と言った。

¹⁶But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

¹⁶しかし、ペテロが門をたたきつづけるので、彼らがあけると、そこにペテロがいたのを見て驚いた。

¹⁷But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

¹⁷ペテロは手を振って彼らを静め、主が獄から彼を連れ出して下さった次第を説明し、「このことを、ヤコブやほかの兄弟たちに伝えて下さい」と言い残して、どこかほかの所へ出て行った。

¹⁸Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

¹⁸夜が明けると、兵卒たちの間に、ペテロはいったいどうなったのだろうと、大へんな騒ぎが起った。

¹⁹And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

¹⁹ヘロデはペテロを捜しても見つからないので、番兵たちを取り調べたうえ、彼らを死刑に処するように命じ、そして、ユダヤからカイザリヤにくだって行って、そこに滞在した。

²⁰And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

²⁰さて、ツロとシドンとの人々は、ヘロデの怒りに触ていたので、一同うちそろって王をおとずれ、王の侍従官ブラストに取りいって、和解かたを依頼した。彼らの地方が、王の国から食糧を得ていたからである。

²¹And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

²¹定められた日に、ヘロデは王服をまとって王座にすわり、彼らにむかって演説をした。

²²And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

²²集まった人々は、「これは神の声だ、人間の声ではない」と叫びつづけた。

²³And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

²³するとたちまち、主の使が彼を打った。神に栄光を帰することをしなかったからである。彼は虫にかまれて息が絶えてしまった。

²⁴But the word of God grew and multiplied.

²⁴こうして、主の言はますます盛んにひろまって行った。バルナバとサウロとは、その任務を果したのち、マルコと呼ばれていたヨハネを連れて、エルサレムから帰ってきた。

²⁵And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
