¹Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

¹死んだはえは、香料を造る者のあぶらを臭くし、少しの愚痴は知恵と誉よりも重い。

²A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

²知者の心は彼を右に向けさせ、愚者の心は左に向けさせる。

³Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

³愚者は道を行く時、思慮が足りない、自分の愚かなことをすべての人に告げる。

⁴If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

⁴つかさたる者があなたに向かって立腹しても、あなたの所を離れてはならない。温順は大いなるとがを和らげるからである。

⁵There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

⁵わたしは日の下に一つの悪のあるのを見た。それはつかさたる者から出るあやまちに似ている。

⁶Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

⁶すなわち愚かなる者が高い地位に置かれ、富める者が卑しい所に座している。

⁷I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

⁷わたしはしもべたる者が馬に乗り、君たる者が奴隷のように徒歩であるくのを見た。

⁸He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

⁸穴を掘る者はみずからこれに陥り、石がきをこわす者は、へびにかまれる。

⁹Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

⁹石を切り出す者はそれがために傷をうけ、木を割る者はそれがために危険にさらされる。

¹⁰If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

¹⁰鉄が鈍くなったとき、人がその刃をみがかなければ、力を多くこれに用いねばならない。しかし、知恵は人を助けてなし遂げさせる。

¹¹Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

¹¹へびがもし呪文をかけられる前に、かみつけば、へび使は益がない。

¹²The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

¹²知者の口の言葉は恵みがある、しかし愚者のくちびるはその身を滅ぼす。

¹³The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

¹³愚者の口の言葉の初めは愚痴である、またその言葉の終りは悪い狂気である。

¹⁴A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁴愚者は言葉を多くする、しかし人はだれも後に起ることを知らない。だれがその身の後に起る事を告げることができようか。

¹⁵The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

¹⁵愚者の労苦はその身を疲れさせる、彼は町にはいる道をさえ知らない。

¹⁶Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

¹⁶あなたの王はわらべであって、その君たちが朝から、ごちそうを食べる国よ、あなたはわざわいだ。

¹⁷Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

¹⁷あなたの王は自主の子であって、その君たちが酔うためでなく、力を得るために、適当な時にごちそうを食べる国よ、あなたはさいわいだ。

¹⁸By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

¹⁸怠惰によって屋根は落ち、無精によって家は漏る。

¹⁹A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

¹⁹食事は笑いのためになされ、酒は命を楽しませる。金銭はすべての事に応じる。あなたは心のうちでも王をのろってはならない、また寝室でも富める者をのろってはならない。空の鳥はあなたの声を伝え、翼のあるものは事を告げるからである。

²⁰Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
