¹To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

¹天が下のすべての事には季節があり、すべてのわざには時がある。

²A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

²生るるに時があり、死ぬるに時があり、植えるに時があり、植えたものを抜くに時があり、

³A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

³殺すに時があり、いやすに時があり、こわすに時があり、建てるに時があり、

⁴A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁴泣くに時があり、笑うに時があり、悲しむに時があり、踊るに時があり、

⁵A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

⁵石を投げるに時があり、石を集めるに時があり、抱くに時があり、抱くことをやめるに時があり、

⁶A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

⁶捜すに時があり、失うに時があり、保つに時があり、捨てるに時があり、

⁷A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

⁷裂くに時があり、縫うに時があり、黙るに時があり、語るに時があり、

⁸A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

⁸愛するに時があり、憎むに時があり、戦うに時があり、和らぐに時がある。

⁹What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?

⁹働く者はその労することにより、なんの益を得るか。

¹⁰I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

¹⁰わたしは神が人の子らに与えて、ほねおらせられる仕事を見た。

¹¹He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

¹¹神のなされることは皆その時にかなって美しい。神はまた人の心に永遠を思う思いを授けられた。それでもなお、人は神のなされるわざを初めから終りまで見きわめることはできない。

¹²I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

¹²わたしは知っている。人にはその生きながらえている間、楽しく愉快に過ごすよりほかに良い事はない。

¹³And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

¹³またすべての人が食い飲みし、そのすべての労苦によって楽しみを得ることは神の賜物である。

¹⁴I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

¹⁴わたしは知っている。すべて神がなさる事は永遠に変ることがなく、これに加えることも、これから取ることもできない。神がこのようにされるのは、人々が神の前に恐れをもつようになるためである。

¹⁵That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

¹⁵今あるものは、すでにあったものである。後にあるものも、すでにあったものである。神は追いやられたものを尋ね求められる。

¹⁶And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.

¹⁶わたしはまた、日の下を見たが、さばきを行う所にも不正があり、公義を行う所にも不正がある。

¹⁷I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

¹⁷わたしは心に言った、「神は正しい者と悪い者とをさばかれる。神はすべての事と、すべてのわざに、時を定められたからである」と。

¹⁸I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

¹⁸わたしはまた、人の子らについて心に言った、「神は彼らをためして、彼らに自分たちが獣にすぎないことを悟らせられるのである」と。

¹⁹For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

¹⁹人の子らに臨むところは獣にも臨むからである。すなわち一様に彼らに臨み、これの死ぬように、彼も死ぬのである。彼らはみな同様の息をもっている。人は獣にまさるところがない。すべてのものは空だからである。

²⁰All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

²⁰みな一つ所に行く。皆ちりから出て、皆ちりに帰る。

²¹Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

²¹だれが知るか、人の子らの霊は上にのぼり、獣の霊は地にくだるかを。それで、わたしは見た、人はその働きによって楽しむにこした事はない。これが彼の分だからである。だれが彼をつれていって、その後の、どうなるかを見させることができようか。

²²Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

²²それで、わたしは見た、人はその働きによって楽しむにこした事はない。これが彼の分だからである。だれが彼をつれていって、その後の、どうなるかを見させることができようか。
