¹Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

¹さて、信仰とは、望んでいる事がらを確信し、まだ見ていない事実を確認することである。

²For by it the elders obtained a good report.

²昔の人たちは、この信仰のゆえに賞賛された。

³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

³信仰によって、わたしたちは、この世界が神の言葉で造られたのであり、したがって、見えるものは現れているものから出てきたのでないことを、悟るのである。

⁴By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

⁴信仰によって、アベルはカインよりもまさったいけにえを神にささげ、信仰によって義なる者と認められた。神が、彼の供え物をよしとされたからである。彼は死んだが、信仰によって今もなお語っている。

⁵By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

⁵信仰によって、エノクは死を見ないように天に移された。神がお移しになったので、彼は見えなくなった。彼が移される前に、神に喜ばれた者と、あかしされていたからである。

⁶But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

⁶信仰がなくては、神に喜ばれることはできない。なぜなら、神に来る者は、神のいますことと、ご自身を求める者に報いて下さることとを、必ず信じるはずだからである。

⁷By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

⁷信仰によって、ノアはまだ見ていない事がらについて御告げを受け、恐れかしこみつつ、その家族を救うために箱舟を造り、その信仰によって世の罪をさばき、そして、信仰による義を受け継ぐ者となった。

⁸By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

⁸信仰によって、アブラハムは、受け継ぐべき地に出て行けとの召しをこうむった時、それに従い、行く先を知らないで出て行った。

⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

⁹信仰によって、他国にいるようにして約束の地に宿り、同じ約束を継ぐイサク、ヤコブと共に、幕屋に住んだ。

¹⁰For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

¹⁰彼は、ゆるがぬ土台の上に建てられた都を、待ち望んでいたのである。その都をもくろみ、また建てたのは、神である。

¹¹Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

¹¹信仰によって、サラもまた、年老いていたが、種を宿す力を与えられた。約束をなさったかたは真実であると、信じていたからである。

¹²Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

¹²このようにして、ひとりの死んだと同様な人から、天の星のように、海べの数えがたい砂のように、おびただしい人が生れてきたのである。

¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

¹³これらの人はみな、信仰をいだいて死んだ。まだ約束のものは受けていなかったが、はるかにそれを望み見て喜び、そして、地上では旅人であり寄留者であることを、自ら言いあらわした。

¹⁴For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

¹⁴そう言いあらわすことによって、彼らがふるさとを求めていることを示している。

¹⁵And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

¹⁵もしその出てきた所のことを考えていたなら、帰る機会はあったであろう。

¹⁶But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

¹⁶しかし実際、彼らが望んでいたのは、もっと良い、天にあるふるさとであった。だから神は、彼らの神と呼ばれても、それを恥とはされなかった。事実、神は彼らのために、都を用意されていたのである。

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

¹⁷信仰によって、アブラハムは、試錬を受けたとき、イサクをささげた。すなわち、約束を受けていた彼が、そのひとり子をささげたのである。

¹⁸Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

¹⁸この子については、「イサクから出る者が、あなたの子孫と呼ばれるであろう」と言われていたのであった。

¹⁹Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

¹⁹彼は、神が死人の中から人をよみがえらせる力がある、と信じていたのである。だから彼は、いわば、イサクを生きかえして渡されたわけである。

²⁰By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

²⁰信仰によって、イサクは、きたるべきことについて、ヤコブとエサウとを祝福した。

²¹By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

²¹信仰によって、ヤコブは死のまぎわに、ヨセフの子らをひとりびとり祝福し、そしてそのつえのかしらによりかかって礼拝した。

²²By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

²²信仰によって、ヨセフはその臨終に、イスラエルの子らの出て行くことを思い、自分の骨のことについてさしずした。

²³By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.

²³信仰によって、モーセの生れたとき、両親は、三か月のあいだ彼を隠した。それは、彼らが子供のうるわしいのを見たからである。彼らはまた、王の命令をも恐れなかった。

²⁴By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

²⁴信仰によって、モーセは、成人したとき、パロの娘の子と言われることを拒み、

²⁵Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

²⁵罪のはかない歓楽にふけるよりは、むしろ神の民と共に虐待されることを選び、

²⁶Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

²⁶キリストのゆえに受けるそしりを、エジプトの宝にまさる富と考えた。それは、彼が報いを望み見ていたからである。

²⁷By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

²⁷信仰によって、彼は王の憤りをも恐れず、エジプトを立ち去った。彼は、見えないかたを見ているようにして、忍びとおした。

²⁸Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

²⁸信仰によって、滅ぼす者が、長子らに手を下すことのないように、彼は過越を行い血を塗った。

²⁹By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

²⁹信仰によって、人々は紅海をかわいた土地をとおるように渡ったが、同じことを企てたエジプト人はおぼれ死んだ。

³⁰By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

³⁰信仰によって、エリコの城壁は、七日にわたってまわったために、くずれおちた。

³¹By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

³¹信仰によって、遊女ラハブは、探りにきた者たちをおだやかに迎えたので、不従順な者どもと一緒に滅びることはなかった。

³²And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

³²このほか、何を言おうか。もしギデオン、バラク、サムソン、エフタ、ダビデ、サムエル及び預言者たちについて語り出すなら、時間が足りないであろう。

³³Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.

³³彼らは信仰によって、国々を征服し、義を行い、約束のものを受け、ししの口をふさぎ、

³⁴Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

³⁴火の勢いを消し、つるぎの刃をのがれ、弱いものは強くされ、戦いの勇者となり、他国の軍を退かせた。

³⁵Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

³⁵女たちは、その死者たちをよみがえらさせてもらった。ほかの者は、更にまさったいのちによみがえるために、拷問の苦しみに甘んじ、放免されることを願わなかった。

³⁶And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

³⁶なおほかの者たちは、あざけられ、むち打たれ、しばり上げられ、投獄されるほどのめに会った。

³⁷They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

³⁷あるいは、石で打たれ、さいなまれ、のこぎりで引かれ、つるぎで切り殺され、羊の皮や、やぎの皮を着て歩きまわり、無一物になり、悩まされ、苦しめられ、

³⁸(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

³⁸（この世は彼らの住む所ではなかった）、荒野と山の中と岩の穴と土の穴とを、さまよい続けた。

³⁹And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

³⁹さて、これらの人々はみな、信仰によってあかしされたが、約束のものは受けなかった。神はわたしたちのために、さらに良いものをあらかじめ備えて下さっているので、わたしたちをほかにしては彼らが全うされることはない。

⁴⁰God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
