¹But Job answered and said,

¹そこでヨブは答えて言った、

²Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

²「あなたがたはとくと、わたしの言葉を聞き、これをもって、あなたがたの慰めとするがよい。

³Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

³まずわたしをゆるして語らせなさい。わたしが語ったのち、あざけるのもよかろう。

⁴As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

⁴わたしのつぶやきは人に対してであろうか。わたしはどうして、いらだたないでいられようか。

⁵Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

⁵あなたがたはわたしを見て、驚き、手を口にあてるがよい。

⁶Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

⁶わたしはこれを思うと恐ろしくなって、からだがしきりに震えわななく。

⁷Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

⁷なにゆえ悪しき人が生きながらえ、老齢に達し、かつ力強くなるのか。

⁸Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

⁸その子らは彼らの前に堅く立ち、その子孫もその目の前に堅く立つ。

⁹Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

⁹その家は安らかで、恐れがなく、神のつえは彼らの上に臨むことがない。

¹⁰Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

¹⁰その雄牛は種を与えて、誤ることなく、その雌牛は子を産んで、そこなうことがない。

¹¹They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

¹¹彼らはその小さい者どもを群れのように連れ出し、その子らは舞い踊る。

¹²They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

¹²彼らは手鼓と琴に合わせて歌い、笛の音によって楽しみ、

¹³They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

¹³その日をさいわいに過ごし、安らかに陰府にくだる。

¹⁴Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

¹⁴彼らは神に言う、『われわれを離れよ、われわれはあなたの道を知ることを好まない。

¹⁵What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

¹⁵全能者は何者なので、われわれはこれに仕えねばならないのか。われわれはこれに祈っても、なんの益があるか』と。

¹⁶Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁶見よ、彼らの繁栄は彼らの手にあるではないか。悪人の計りごとは、わたしの遠く及ぶ所でない。

¹⁷How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

¹⁷悪人のともしびの消されること、幾たびあるか。その災の彼らの上に臨むこと、神がその怒りをもって苦しみを与えられること、幾たびあるか。

¹⁸They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

¹⁸彼らが風の前のわらのようになること、あらしに吹き去られるもみがらのようになること、幾たびあるか。

¹⁹God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

¹⁹あなたがたは言う、『神は彼らの罪を積みたくわえて、その子らに報いられるのだ』と。どうかそれを彼ら自身に報いて、彼らにその罪を知らせられるように。

²⁰His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

²⁰すなわち彼ら自身の目にその滅びを見させ、全能者の怒りを彼らに飲ませられるように。

²¹For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

²¹その月の数のつきるとき、彼らはその後の家になんのかかわる所があろうか。

²²Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

²²神は天にある者たちをさえ、さばかれるのに、だれが神に知識を教えることができようか。

²³One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

²³ある者は繁栄をきわめ、全く安らかに、かつおだやかに死に、

²⁴His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

²⁴そのからだには脂肪が満ち、その骨の髄は潤っている。

²⁵And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

²⁵ある者は心を苦しめて死に、なんの幸をも味わうことがない。

²⁶They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

²⁶彼らはひとしくちりに伏し、うじにおおわれる。

²⁷Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

²⁷見よ、わたしはあなたがたの思いを知り、わたしを害しようとするたくらみを知る。

²⁸For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

²⁸あなたがたは言う、『王侯の家はどこにあるか、悪人の住む天幕はどこにあるか』と。

²⁹Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,

²⁹あなたがたは道行く人々に問わなかったか、彼らの証言を受け入れないのか。

³⁰That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

³⁰すなわち、災の日に悪人は免れ、激しい怒りの日に彼は救い出される。

³¹Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

³¹だれが彼に向かって、その道を告げ知らせる者があるか、だれが彼のした事を彼に報いる者があるか。

³²Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

³²彼はかかれて墓に行き、塚の上で見張りされ、

³³The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

³³谷の土くれも彼には快く、すべての人はそのあとに従う。彼の前に行った者も数えきれない。それで、あなたがたはどうしてむなしい事をもって、わたしを慰めようとするのか。あなたがたの答は偽り以外の何ものでもない」。

³⁴How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

³⁴それで、あなたがたはどうしてむなしい事をもって、わたしを慰めようとするのか。あなたがたの答は偽り以外の何ものでもない」。
