¹And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

¹イエスが道をとおっておられるとき、生れつきの盲人を見られた。

²And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

²弟子たちはイエスに尋ねて言った、「先生、この人が生れつき盲人なのは、だれが罪を犯したためですか。本人ですか、それともその両親ですか」。

³Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

³イエスは答えられた、「本人が罪を犯したのでもなく、また、その両親が犯したのでもない。ただ神のみわざが、彼の上に現れるためである。

⁴I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

⁴わたしたちは、わたしをつかわされたかたのわざを、昼の間にしなければならない。夜が来る。すると、だれも働けなくなる。

⁵As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

⁵わたしは、この世にいる間は、世の光である」。

⁶When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

⁶イエスはそう言って、地につばきをし、そのつばきで、どろをつくり、そのどろを盲人の目に塗って言われた、

⁷And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

⁷「シロアム（つかわされた者、の意）の池に行って洗いなさい」。そこで彼は行って洗った。そして見えるようになって、帰って行った。

⁸The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

⁸近所の人々や、彼がもと、こじきであったのを見知っていた人々が言った、「この人は、すわってこじきをしていた者ではないか」。

⁹Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

⁹ある人々は「その人だ」と言い、他の人々は「いや、ただあの人に似ているだけだ」と言った。しかし、本人は「わたしがそれだ」と言った。

¹⁰Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

¹⁰そこで人々は彼に言った、「では、おまえの目はどうしてあいたのか」。

¹¹He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

¹¹彼は答えた、「イエスというかたが、どろをつくって、わたしの目に塗り、『シロアムに行って洗え』と言われました。それで、行って洗うと、見えるようになりました」。

¹²Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

¹²人々は彼に言った、「その人はどこにいるのか」。彼は「知りません」と答えた。

¹³They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

¹³人々は、もと盲人であったこの人を、パリサイ人たちのところにつれて行った。

¹⁴And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

¹⁴イエスがどろをつくって彼の目をあけたのは、安息日であった。

¹⁵Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

¹⁵パリサイ人たちもまた、「どうして見えるようになったのか」、と彼に尋ねた。彼は答えた、「あのかたがわたしの目にどろを塗り、わたしがそれを洗い、そして見えるようになりました」。

¹⁶Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

¹⁶そこで、あるパリサイ人たちが言った、「その人は神からきた人ではない。安息日を守っていないのだから」。しかし、ほかの人々は言った、「罪のある人が、どうしてそのようなしるしを行うことができようか」。そして彼らの間に分争が生じた。

¹⁷They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

¹⁷そこで彼らは、もう一度この盲人に聞いた、「おまえの目をあけてくれたその人を、どう思うか」。「預言者だと思います」と彼は言った。

¹⁸But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

¹⁸ユダヤ人たちは、彼がもと盲人であったが見えるようになったことを、まだ信じなかった。ついに彼らは、目が見えるようになったこの人の両親を呼んで、

¹⁹And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

¹⁹尋ねて言った、「これが、生れつき盲人であったと、おまえたちの言っているむすこか。それではどうして、いま目が見えるのか」。

²⁰His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

²⁰両親は答えて言った、「これがわたしどものむすこであること、また生れつき盲人であったことは存じています。

²¹But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

²¹しかし、どうしていま見えるようになったのか、それは知りません。また、だれがその目をあけて下さったのかも知りません。あれに聞いて下さい。あれはもうおとなですから、自分のことは自分で話せるでしょう」。

²²These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

²²両親はユダヤ人たちを恐れていたので、こう答えたのである。それは、もしイエスをキリストと告白する者があれば、会堂から追い出すことに、ユダヤ人たちが既に決めていたからである。

²³Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

²³彼の両親が「おとなですから、あれに聞いて下さい」と言ったのは、そのためであった。

²⁴Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

²⁴そこで彼らは、盲人であった人をもう一度呼んで言った、「神に栄光を帰するがよい。あの人が罪人であることは、わたしたちにはわかっている」。

²⁵He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

²⁵すると彼は言った、「あのかたが罪人であるかどうか、わたしは知りません。ただ一つのことだけ知っています。わたしは盲であったが、今は見えるということです」。

²⁶Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

²⁶そこで彼らは言った、「その人はおまえに何をしたのか。どんなにしておまえの目をあけたのか」。

²⁷He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

²⁷彼は答えた、「そのことはもう話してあげたのに、聞いてくれませんでした。なぜまた聞こうとするのですか。あなたがたも、あの人の弟子になりたいのですか」。

²⁸Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.

²⁸そこで彼らは彼をののしって言った、「おまえはあれの弟子だが、わたしたちはモーセの弟子だ。

²⁹We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

²⁹モーセに神が語られたということは知っている。だが、あの人がどこからきた者か、わたしたちは知らぬ」。

³⁰The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

³⁰そこで彼が答えて言った、「わたしの目をあけて下さったのに、そのかたがどこからきたか、ご存じないとは、不思議千万です。

³¹Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

³¹わたしたちはこのことを知っています。神は罪人の言うことはお聞きいれになりませんが、神を敬い、そのみこころを行う人の言うことは、聞きいれて下さいます。

³²Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

³²生れつき盲であった者の目をあけた人があるということは、世界が始まって以来、聞いたことがありません。

³³If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

³³もしあのかたが神からきた人でなかったら、何一つできなかったはずです」。

³⁴They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

³⁴これを聞いて彼らは言った、「おまえは全く罪の中に生れていながら、わたしたちを教えようとするのか」。そして彼を外へ追い出した。

³⁵Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

³⁵イエスは、その人が外へ追い出されたことを聞かれた。そして彼に会って言われた、「あなたは人の子を信じるか」。

³⁶He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

³⁶彼は答えて言った、「主よ、それはどなたですか。そのかたを信じたいのですが」。

³⁷And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

³⁷イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたは、もうその人に会っている。今あなたと話しているのが、その人である」。

³⁸And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

³⁸すると彼は、「主よ、信じます」と言って、イエスを拝した。

³⁹And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

³⁹そこでイエスは言われた、「わたしがこの世にきたのは、さばくためである。すなわち、見えない人たちが見えるようになり、見える人たちが見えないようになるためである」。

⁴⁰And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

⁴⁰そこにイエスと一緒にいたあるパリサイ人たちが、それを聞いてイエスに言った、「それでは、わたしたちも盲なのでしょうか」。イエスは彼らに言われた、「もしあなたがたが盲人であったなら、罪はなかったであろう。しかし、今あなたがたが『見える』と言い張るところに、あなたがたの罪がある。

⁴¹Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

⁴¹イエスは彼らに言われた、「もしあなたがたが盲人であったなら、罪はなかったであろう。しかし、今あなたがたが『見える』と言い張るところに、あなたがたの罪がある。
