¹Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

¹さてエリコは、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、かたく閉ざして、出入りするものがなかった。

²And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

²主はヨシュアに言われた、「見よ、わたしはエリコと、その王および大勇士を、あなたの手にわたしている。

³And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

³あなたがた、いくさびとはみな、町を巡って、町の周囲を一度回らなければならない。六日の間そのようにしなければならない。

⁴And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

⁴七人の祭司たちは、おのおの雄羊の角のラッパを携えて、箱に先立たなければならない。そして七日目には七度町を巡り、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らさなければならない。

⁵And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

⁵そして祭司たちが雄羊の角を長く吹き鳴らし、そのラッパの音が、あなたがたに聞える時、民はみな大声に呼ばわり、叫ばなければならない。そうすれば、町の周囲の石がきは、くずれ落ち、民はみなただちに進んで、攻め上ることができる」。

⁶And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD.

⁶ヌンの子ヨシュアは祭司たちを召して言った、「あなたがたは契約の箱をかき、七人の祭司たちは雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立たなければならない」。

⁷And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.

⁷そして民に言った、「あなたがたは進んで行って町を巡りなさい。武装した者は主の箱に先立って進まなければならない」。

⁸And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

⁸ヨシュアが民に命じたように、七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主に先立って進み、ラッパを吹き鳴らした。主の契約の箱はそのあとに従った。

⁹And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rearward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

⁹武装した者はラッパを吹き鳴らす祭司たちに先立って行き、しんがりは箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。

¹⁰And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

¹⁰しかし、ヨシュアは民に命じて言った、「あなたがたは呼ばわってはならない。あなたがたの声を聞えさせてはならない。また口から言葉を出してはならない。ただ、わたしが呼ばわれと命じる日に、あなたがたは呼ばわらなければならない」。

¹¹So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

¹¹こうして主の箱を持って、町を巡らせ、その周囲を一度回らせた。人々は宿営に帰り、夜を宿営で過ごした。

¹²And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.

¹²翌朝ヨシュアは早く起き、祭司たちは主の箱をかき、

¹³And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rearward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

¹³七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立ち、絶えず、ラッパを吹き鳴らして進み、武装した者はこれに先立って行き、しんがりは主の箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。

¹⁴And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

¹⁴その次の日にも、町の周囲を一度巡って宿営に帰った。六日の間そのようにした。

¹⁵And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

¹⁵七日目には、夜明けに、早く起き、同じようにして、町を七度めぐった。町を七度めぐったのはこの日だけであった。

¹⁶And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

¹⁶七度目に、祭司たちがラッパを吹いた時、ヨシュアは民に言った、「呼ばわりなさい。主はこの町をあなたがたに賜わった。

¹⁷And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

¹⁷この町と、その中のすべてのものは、主への奉納物として滅ぼされなければならない。ただし遊女ラハブと、その家に共におる者はみな生かしておかなければならない。われわれが送った使者たちをかくまったからである。

¹⁸And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

¹⁸また、あなたがたは、奉納物に手を触れてはならない。奉納に当り、その奉納物をみずから取って、イスラエルの宿営を、滅ぼさるべきものとし、それを悩ますことのないためである。

¹⁹But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.

¹⁹ただし、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、みな主に聖なる物であるから、主の倉に携え入れなければならない」。

²⁰So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

²⁰そこで民は呼ばわり、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らした。民はラッパの音を聞くと同時に、みな大声をあげて呼ばわったので、石がきはくずれ落ちた。そこで民はみな、すぐに上って町にはいり、町を攻め取った。

²¹And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

²¹そして町にあるものは、男も、女も、若い者も、老いた者も、また牛、羊、ろばをも、ことごとくつるぎにかけて滅ぼした。

²²But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

²²その時ヨシュアは、この地を探ったふたりの人に言った、「あの遊女の家にはいって、その女と彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、彼女に誓ったようにしなさい」。

²³And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

²³斥候となったその若い人たちははいって、ラハブとその父母、兄弟、そのほか彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、その親族をみな連れ出して、イスラエルの宿営の外に置いた。

²⁴And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

²⁴そして火で町とその中のすべてのものを焼いた。ただ、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、主の家の倉に納めた。

²⁵And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

²⁵しかし、遊女ラハブとその父の家の一族と彼女に属するすべてのものとは、ヨシュアが生かしておいたので、ラハブは今日までイスラエルのうちに住んでいる。これはヨシュアがエリコを探らせるためにつかわした使者たちをかくまったためである。

²⁶And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

²⁶ヨシュアは、その時、人々に誓いを立てて言った、「おおよそ立って、このエリコの町を再建する人は、主の前にのろわれるであろう。その礎をすえる人は長子を失い、その門を建てる人は末の子を失うであろう」。主はヨシュアと共におられ、ヨシュアの名声は、あまねくその地に広がった。

²⁷So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
