¹Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

¹イエスはこれらの言葉をことごとく人々に聞かせてしまったのち、カペナウムに帰ってこられた。

²And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

²ところが、ある百卒長の頼みにしていた僕が、病気になって死にかかっていた。

³And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

³この百卒長はイエスのことを聞いて、ユダヤ人の長老たちをイエスのところにつかわし、自分の僕を助けにきてくださるようにと、お願いした。

⁴And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

⁴彼らはイエスのところにきて、熱心に願って言った、「あの人はそうしていただくねうちがございます。

⁵For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

⁵わたしたちの国民を愛し、わたしたちのために会堂を建ててくれたのです」。

⁶Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

⁶そこで、イエスは彼らと連れだってお出かけになった。ところが、その家からほど遠くないあたりまでこられたとき、百卒長は友だちを送ってイエスに言わせた、「主よ、どうぞ、ご足労くださいませんように。わたしの屋根の下にあなたをお入れする資格は、わたしにはございません。

⁷Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

⁷それですから、自分でお迎えにあがるねうちさえないと思っていたのです。ただ、お言葉を下さい。そして、わたしの僕をなおしてください。

⁸For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

⁸わたしも権威の下に服している者ですが、わたしの下にも兵卒がいまして、ひとりの者に『行け』と言えば行き、ほかの者に『こい』と言えばきますし、また、僕に『これをせよ』と言えば、してくれるのです」。

⁹When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

⁹イエスはこれを聞いて非常に感心され、ついてきた群衆の方に振り向いて言われた、「あなたがたに言っておくが、これほどの信仰は、イスラエルの中でも見たことがない」。

¹⁰And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

¹⁰使にきた者たちが家に帰ってみると、僕は元気になっていた。

¹¹And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

¹¹そののち、間もなく、ナインという町へおいでになったが、弟子たちや大ぜいの群衆も一緒に行った。

¹²Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

¹²町の門に近づかれると、ちょうど、あるやもめにとってひとりむすこであった者が死んだので、葬りに出すところであった。大ぜいの町の人たちが、その母につきそっていた。

¹³And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

¹³主はこの婦人を見て深い同情を寄せられ、「泣かないでいなさい」と言われた。

¹⁴And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

¹⁴そして近寄って棺に手をかけられると、かついでいる者たちが立ち止まったので、「若者よ、さあ、起きなさい」と言われた。

¹⁵And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

¹⁵すると、死人が起き上がって物を言い出した。イエスは彼をその母にお渡しになった。

¹⁶And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

¹⁶人々はみな恐れをいだき、「大預言者がわたしたちの間に現れた」、また、「神はその民を顧みてくださった」と言って、神をほめたたえた。

¹⁷And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

¹⁷イエスについてのこの話は、ユダヤ全土およびその附近のいたる所にひろまった。

¹⁸And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

¹⁸ヨハネの弟子たちは、これらのことを全部彼に報告した。するとヨハネは弟子の中からふたりの者を呼んで、

¹⁹And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

¹⁹主のもとに送り、「『きたるべきかた』はあなたなのですか。それとも、ほかにだれかを待つべきでしょうか」と尋ねさせた。

²⁰When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

²⁰そこで、この人たちがイエスのもとにきて言った、「わたしたちはバプテスマのヨハネからの使ですが、『きたるべきかた』はあなたなのですか、それとも、ほかにだれかを待つべきでしょうか、とヨハネが尋ねています」。

²¹And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

²¹そのとき、イエスはさまざまの病苦と悪霊とに悩む人々をいやし、また多くの盲人を見えるようにしておられたが、

²²Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

²²答えて言われた、「行って、あなたがたが見聞きしたことを、ヨハネに報告しなさい。盲人は見え、足なえは歩き、らい病人はきよまり、耳しいは聞え、死人は生きかえり、貧しい人々は福音を聞かされている。

²³And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

²³わたしにつまずかない者は、さいわいである」。

²⁴And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

²⁴ヨハネの使が行ってしまうと、イエスはヨハネのことを群衆に語りはじめられた、「あなたがたは、何を見に荒野に出てきたのか。風に揺らぐ葦であるか。

²⁵But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

²⁵では、何を見に出てきたのか。柔らかい着物をまとった人か。きらびやかに着かざって、ぜいたくに暮している人々なら、宮殿にいる。

²⁶But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

²⁶では、何を見に出てきたのか。預言者か。そうだ、あなたがたに言うが、預言者以上の者である。

²⁷This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁷『見よ、わたしは使をあなたの先につかわし、あなたの前に、道を整えさせるであろう』と書いてあるのは、この人のことである。

²⁸For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²⁸あなたがたに言っておく。女の産んだ者の中で、ヨハネより大きい人物はいない。しかし、神の国で最も小さい者も、彼よりは大きい。

²⁹And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

²⁹（これを聞いた民衆は皆、また取税人たちも、ヨハネのバプテスマを受けて神の正しいことを認めた。

³⁰But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

³⁰しかし、パリサイ人と律法学者たちとは彼からバプテスマを受けないで、自分たちに対する神のみこころを無にした。）

³¹And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

³¹だから今の時代の人々を何に比べようか。彼らは何に似ているか。

³²They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

³²それは子供たちが広場にすわって、互に呼びかけ、『わたしたちが笛を吹いたのに、あなたたちは踊ってくれなかった。弔いの歌を歌ったのに、泣いてくれなかった』と言うのに似ている。

³³For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

³³なぜなら、バプテスマのヨハネがきて、パンを食べることも、ぶどう酒を飲むこともしないと、あなたがたは、あれは悪霊につかれているのだ、と言い、

³⁴The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

³⁴また人の子がきて食べたり飲んだりしていると、見よ、あれは食をむさぼる者、大酒を飲む者、また取税人、罪人の仲間だ、と言う。

³⁵But wisdom is justified of all her children.

³⁵しかし、知恵の正しいことは、そのすべての子が証明する」。

³⁶And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.

³⁶あるパリサイ人がイエスに、食事を共にしたいと申し出たので、そのパリサイ人の家にはいって食卓に着かれた。

³⁷And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

³⁷するとそのとき、その町で罪の女であったものが、パリサイ人の家で食卓に着いておられることを聞いて、香油が入れてある石膏のつぼを持ってきて、

³⁸And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁸泣きながら、イエスのうしろでその足もとに寄り、まず涙でイエスの足をぬらし、自分の髪の毛でぬぐい、そして、その足に接吻して、香油を塗った。

³⁹Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

³⁹イエスを招いたパリサイ人がそれを見て、心の中で言った、「もしこの人が預言者であるなら、自分にさわっている女がだれだか、どんな女かわかるはずだ。それは罪の女なのだから」。

⁴⁰And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

⁴⁰そこでイエスは彼にむかって言われた、「シモン、あなたに言うことがある」。彼は「先生、おっしゃってください」と言った。

⁴¹There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

⁴¹イエスが言われた、「ある金貸しに金をかりた人がふたりいたが、ひとりは五百デナリ、もうひとりは五十デナリを借りていた。

⁴²And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

⁴²ところが、返すことができなかったので、彼はふたり共ゆるしてやった。このふたりのうちで、どちらが彼を多く愛するだろうか」。

⁴³Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

⁴³シモンが答えて言った、「多くゆるしてもらったほうだと思います」。イエスが言われた、「あなたの判断は正しい」。

⁴⁴And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

⁴⁴それから女の方に振り向いて、シモンに言われた、「この女を見ないか。わたしがあなたの家にはいってきた時に、あなたは足を洗う水をくれなかった。ところが、この女は涙でわたしの足をぬらし、髪の毛でふいてくれた。

⁴⁵Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

⁴⁵あなたはわたしに接吻をしてくれなかったが、彼女はわたしが家にはいった時から、わたしの足に接吻をしてやまなかった。

⁴⁶My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

⁴⁶あなたはわたしの頭に油を塗ってくれなかったが、彼女はわたしの足に香油を塗ってくれた。

⁴⁷Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

⁴⁷それであなたに言うが、この女は多く愛したから、その多くの罪はゆるされているのである。少しだけゆるされた者は、少しだけしか愛さない」。

⁴⁸And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

⁴⁸そして女に、「あなたの罪はゆるされた」と言われた。

⁴⁹And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

⁴⁹すると同席の者たちが心の中で言いはじめた、「罪をゆるすことさえするこの人は、いったい、何者だろう」。しかし、イエスは女にむかって言われた、「あなたの信仰があなたを救ったのです。安心して行きなさい」。

⁵⁰And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

⁵⁰しかし、イエスは女にむかって言われた、「あなたの信仰があなたを救ったのです。安心して行きなさい」。
