¹Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹「見よ、わたしはわが使者をつかわす。彼はわたしの前に道を備える。またあなたがたが求める所の主は、たちまちその宮に来る。見よ、あなたがたの喜ぶ契約の使者が来ると、万軍の主が言われる。

²But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

²その来る日には、だれが耐え得よう。そのあらわれる時には、だれが立ち得よう。彼は金をふきわける者の火のようであり、布さらしの灰汁のようである。

³And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

³彼は銀をふきわけて清める者のように座して、レビの子孫を清め、金銀のように彼らを清める。そして彼らは義をもって、ささげ物を主にささげる。

⁴Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

⁴その時ユダとエルサレムとのささげ物は、昔の日のように、また先の年のように主に喜ばれる。

⁵And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

⁵そしてわたしはあなたがたに近づいて、さばきをなし、占い者、姦淫を行う者、偽りの誓いをなす者にむかい、雇人の賃銀をかすめ、やもめと、みなしごとをしえたげ、寄留の他国人を押しのけ、わたしを恐れない者どもにむかって、すみやかにあかしを立てると、万軍の主は言われる。

⁶For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

⁶主なるわたしは変ることがない。それゆえ、ヤコブの子らよ、あなたがたは滅ぼされない。

⁷Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

⁷あなたがたは、その先祖の日から、わが定めを離れて、これを守らなかった。わたしに帰れ、わたしはあなたがたに帰ろうと、万軍の主は言われる。ところが、あなたがたは『われわれはどうして帰ろうか』と尋ねる。

⁸Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

⁸人は神の物を盗むことをするだろうか。しかしあなたがたは、わたしの物を盗んでいる。あなたがたはまた『どうしてわれわれは、あなたの物を盗んでいるのか』と言う。十分の一と、ささげ物をもってである。

⁹Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

⁹あなたがたは、のろいをもって、のろわれる。あなたがたすべての国民は、わたしの物を盗んでいるからである。

¹⁰Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

¹⁰わたしの宮に食物のあるように、十分の一全部をわたしの倉に携えてきなさい。これをもってわたしを試み、わたしが天の窓を開いて、あふるる恵みを、あなたがたに注ぐか否かを見なさいと、万軍の主は言われる。

¹¹And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹¹わたしは食い滅ぼす者を、あなたがたのためにおさえて、あなたがたの地の産物を、滅ぼさないようにしよう。また、あなたがたのぶどうの木が、その熟する前に、その実を畑に落すことのないようにしようと、万軍の主は言われる。

¹²And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹²こうして万国の人は、あなたがたを祝福された者ととなえるであろう。あなたがたは楽しい地となるからであると、万軍の主は言われる。

¹³Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?

¹³主は言われる、あなたがたは言葉を激しくして、わたしに逆らった。しかもあなたがたは『われわれはあなたに逆らって、どんな事を言ったか』と言う。

¹⁴Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

¹⁴あなたがたは言った、『神に仕える事はつまらない。われわれがその命令を守り、かつ万軍の主の前に、悲しんで歩いたからといって、なんの益があるか。

¹⁵And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

¹⁵今われわれは高ぶる者を、祝福された者と思う。悪を行う者は栄えるばかりでなく、神を試みても罰せられない』」。

¹⁶Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

¹⁶そのとき、主を恐れる者は互に語った。主は耳を傾けてこれを聞かれた。そして主を恐れる者、およびその名を心に留めている者のために、主の前に一つの覚え書がしるされた。

¹⁷And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

¹⁷「万軍の主は言われる、彼らはわたしが手を下して事を行う日に、わたしの者となり、わたしの宝となる。また人が自分に仕える子をあわれむように、わたしは彼らをあわれむ。その時あなたがたは、再び義人と悪人、神に仕える者と、仕えない者との区別を知るようになる。

¹⁸Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
