¹My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

²Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

²もしあなたのくちびるの言葉によって、わなにかかり、あなたの口の言葉によって捕えられたならば、

³Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

³わが子よ、その時はこうして、おのれを救え、あなたは隣り人の手に陥ったのだから。急いで行って、隣り人にひたすら求めよ。

⁴Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

⁴あなたの目を眠らせず、あなたのまぶたを、まどろませず、

⁵Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

⁵かもしかが、かりゅうどの手からのがれるように、鳥が鳥を取る者の手からのがれるように、おのれを救え。

⁶Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

⁶なまけ者よ、ありのところへ行き、そのすることを見て、知恵を得よ。

⁷Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

⁷ありは、かしらなく、つかさなく、王もないが、

⁸Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

⁸夏のうちに食物をそなえ、刈入れの時に、かてを集める。

⁹How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

⁹なまけ者よ、いつまで寝ているのか、いつ目をさまして起きるのか。

¹⁰Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

¹⁰しばらく眠り、しばらくまどろみ、手をこまぬいて、またしばらく休む。

¹¹So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

¹¹それゆえ、貧しさは盗びとのようにあなたに来り、乏しさは、つわもののようにあなたに来る。

¹²A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

¹²よこしまな人、悪しき人は偽りの言葉をもって行きめぐり、

¹³He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

¹³目でめくばせし、足で踏み鳴らし、指で示し、

¹⁴Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

¹⁴よこしまな心をもって悪を計り、絶えず争いをおこす。

¹⁵Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

¹⁵それゆえ、災は、にわかに彼に臨み、たちまちにして打ち敗られ、助かることはない。

¹⁶These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

¹⁶主の憎まれるものが六つある、否、その心に、忌みきらわれるものが七つある。

¹⁷A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹⁷すなわち、高ぶる目、偽りを言う舌、罪なき人の血を流す手、

¹⁸An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

¹⁸悪しき計りごとをめぐらす心、すみやかに悪に走る足、

¹⁹A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

¹⁹偽りをのべる証人、また兄弟のうちに争いをおこす人がこれである。

²⁰My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

²⁰わが子よ、あなたの父の戒めを守り、あなたの母の教を捨てるな。

²¹Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

²¹つねに、これをあなたの心に結び、あなたの首のまわりにつけよ。

²²When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

²²これは、あなたが歩くとき、あなたを導き、あなたが寝るとき、あなたを守り、あなたが目ざめるとき、あなたと語る。

²³For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

²³戒めはともしびである、教は光である、教訓の懲しめは命の道である。

²⁴To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

²⁴これは、あなたを守って、悪い女に近づかせず、みだらな女の、巧みな舌に惑わされぬようにする。

²⁵Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

²⁵彼女の麗しさを心に慕ってはならない、そのまぶたに捕えられてはならない。

²⁶For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.

²⁶遊女は一塊のパンのために雇われる、しかし、みだらな女は人の尊い命を求める。

²⁷Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

²⁷人は火を、そのふところにいだいてその着物が焼かれないであろうか。

²⁸Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

²⁸また人は、熱い火を踏んで、その足が、焼かれないであろうか。

²⁹So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

²⁹その隣の妻と不義を行う者も、それと同じだ。すべて彼女に触れる者は罰を免れることはできない。

³⁰Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

³⁰盗びとが飢えたとき、その飢えを満たすために盗むならば、人は彼を軽んじないであろうか。

³¹But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

³¹もし捕えられたなら、その七倍を償い、その家の貨財を、ことごとく出さなければならない。

³²But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

³²女と姦淫を行う者は思慮がない。これを行う者はおのれを滅ぼし、

³³A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

³³傷と、はずかしめとを受けて、その恥をすすぐことができない。

³⁴For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

³⁴ねたみは、その夫を激しく怒らせるゆえ、恨みを報いるとき、容赦することはない。どのようなあがない物をも顧みず、多くの贈り物をしても、和らがない。

³⁵He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
