¹Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

¹神は正しい者にむかい、心の清い者にむかって、まことに恵みふかい。

²But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

²しかし、わたしは、わたしの足がつまずくばかり、わたしの歩みがすべるばかりであった。

³For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

³これはわたしが、悪しき者の栄えるのを見て、その高ぶる者をねたんだからである。

⁴For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.

⁴彼らには苦しみがなく、その身はすこやかで、つやがあり、

⁵They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

⁵ほかの人々のように悩むことがなく、ほかの人々のように打たれることはない。

⁶Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

⁶それゆえ高慢は彼らの首飾となり、暴力は衣のように彼らをおおっている。

⁷Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

⁷彼らは肥え太って、その目はとびいで、その心は愚かな思いに満ちあふれている。

⁸They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

⁸彼らはあざけり、悪意をもって語り、高ぶって、しえたげを語る。

⁹They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

⁹彼らはその口を天にさからって置き、その舌は地をあるきまわる。

¹⁰Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

¹⁰それゆえ民は心を変えて彼らをほめたたえ、彼らのうちにあやまちを認めない。

¹¹And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

¹¹彼らは言う、「神はどうして知り得ようか、いと高き者に知識があろうか」と。

¹²Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

¹²見よ、これらは悪しき者であるのに、常に安らかで、その富が増し加わる。

¹³Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.

¹³まことに、わたしはいたずらに心をきよめ、罪を犯すことなく手を洗った。

¹⁴For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

¹⁴わたしはひねもす打たれ、朝ごとに懲しめをうけた。

¹⁵If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

¹⁵もしわたしが「このような事を語ろう」と言ったなら、わたしはあなたの子らの代を誤らせたであろう。

¹⁶When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

¹⁶しかし、わたしがこれを知ろうと思いめぐらしたとき、これはわたしにめんどうな仕事のように思われた。

¹⁷Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

¹⁷わたしが神の聖所に行って、彼らの最後を悟り得たまではそうであった。

¹⁸Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.

¹⁸まことにあなたは彼らをなめらかな所に置き、彼らを滅びに陥らせられる。

¹⁹How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁹なんと彼らはまたたくまに滅ぼされ、恐れをもって全く一掃されたことであろう。

²⁰As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

²⁰あなたが目をさまして彼らの影をかろしめられるとき、彼らは夢みた人の目をさました時のようである。

²¹Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.

²¹わたしの魂が痛み、わたしの心が刺されたとき、

²²So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.

²²わたしは愚かで悟りがなく、あなたに対しては獣のようであった。

²³Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.

²³けれどもわたしは常にあなたと共にあり、あなたはわたしの右の手を保たれる。

²⁴Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

²⁴あなたはさとしをもってわたしを導き、その後わたしを受けて栄光にあずからせられる。

²⁵Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

²⁵わたしはあなたのほかに、だれを天にもち得よう。地にはあなたのほかに慕うものはない。

²⁶My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

²⁶わが身とわが心とは衰える。しかし神はとこしえにわが心の力、わが嗣業である。

²⁷For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.

²⁷見よ、あなたに遠い者は滅びる。あなたは、あなたにそむく者を滅ぼされる。しかし神に近くあることはわたしに良いことである。わたしは主なる神をわが避け所として、あなたのもろもろのみわざを宣べ伝えるであろう。

²⁸But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
