¹But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

²That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

²老人たちには自らを制し、謹厳で、慎み深くし、また、信仰と愛と忍耐とにおいて健全であるように勧め、

³The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

³年老いた女たちにも、同じように、たち居ふるまいをうやうやしくし、人をそしったり大酒の奴隷になったりせず、良いことを教える者となるように、勧めなさい。

⁴That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

⁴そうすれば、彼女たちは、若い女たちに、夫を愛し、子供を愛し、

⁵To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

⁵慎み深く、純潔で、家事に努め、善良で、自分の夫に従順であるように教えることになり、したがって、神の言がそしりを受けないようになるであろう。

⁶Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

⁶若い男にも、同じく、万事につけ慎み深くあるように、勧めなさい。

⁷In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

⁷あなた自身を良いわざの模範として示し、人を教える場合には、清廉と謹厳とをもってし、

⁸Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

⁸非難のない健全な言葉を用いなさい。そうすれば、反対者も、わたしたちについてなんの悪口も言えなくなり、自ら恥じいるであろう。

⁹Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

⁹奴隷には、万事につけその主人に服従して、喜ばれるようになり、反抗をせず、

¹⁰Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

¹⁰盗みをせず、どこまでも心をこめた真実を示すようにと、勧めなさい。そうすれば、彼らは万事につけ、わたしたちの救主なる神の教を飾ることになろう。

¹¹For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

¹¹すべての人を救う神の恵みが現れた。

¹²Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

¹²そして、わたしたちを導き、不信心とこの世の情欲とを捨てて、慎み深く、正しく、信心深くこの世で生活し、

¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

¹³祝福に満ちた望み、すなわち、大いなる神、わたしたちの救主キリスト・イエスの栄光の出現を待ち望むようにと、教えている。

¹⁴Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

¹⁴このキリストが、わたしたちのためにご自身をささげられたのは、わたしたちをすべての不法からあがない出して、良いわざに熱心な選びの民を、ご自身のものとして聖別するためにほかならない。あなたは、権威をもってこれらのことを語り、勧め、また責めなさい。だれにも軽んじられてはならない。

¹⁵These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
