1And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
1दावीदाने मग परमेश्वराला विचारले, “मी यहूदातील एखाद्या नगरात जाऊ का?” तेव्हा परमेश्वर म्हणाला, “हो खुशाल जा” दावीदाने विचारले, “कुठे जाऊ?” देवाने सांगितले, “हेब्रोनला जा.”
2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
2तेव्हा दावीद आपल्या दोन्ही बायकांसह हेब्रोनला गेला. (इज्रेलची अहीनवाम आणि कर्मेलच्या नाबालची विधवा अबीगईल या त्याच्या दोन बायका)
3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.

5And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
5तेव्हा दावीदाने याबेश गिलादच्या लोकांकडे दूत पाठवून संदेश दिला, “आपला स्वामी शौल याचा दफनविथी करुन तुम्ही जो दयाभाव दाखवला आहे त्याबद्दल परमेश्वर तुमचे भले करो.
6And now the LORD show kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
6देव तुमच्याशी प्रामाणिक राहील, तुमच्यावर प्रेमाची पाखर घालील. मीही तुमच्याशी दयाळूपणाने वागेन. कारण तुम्ही हे काम केलेले आहे.
7Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
7आता खंबीर राहा आणि धैर्याने वागा. आपला स्वामी शौल मरण पावला असला तरी यहूदा वंशातील लोकांनी मला राज्याभिषेक केला आहे.”
8But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
8नेरचा मुला अबनेर हा शौलचा सेनापती होता. इकडे तो शौलचा मुलगा इश-बोशेथ याला घेऊन महनाईम याठिकाणी आला.
9And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
9आणि त्याने ईश-बोशेथला गिलाद, अशेर, इज्रेल, एफ्राईम, बन्यामी आणि सर्व इस्राएल यांच्यावर राजा म्हणून नेमले.
10Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
10हा शौलाचा पुत्र ईश-बोशेथ इस्राएलवर राज्य करु लागला तेव्हा चाळीस वर्षाचा होता. त्याने दोन वर्षे कारभार पाहिला. पण यहूदा वंशाचा पाठिंबा दावीदाला होता.
11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
11दावीद हेब्रोनमध्ये राज्य करत होता. त्याने यहूदांच्या घराण्यावर साडेसात वर्षे राज्य केले.
12And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
12नेरचा मुलगा अबनेर आणि शौलपुत्र ईश-बोशेथचे सेवक महनाईम सोडून गिबोन येथे आले.
13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
13सरुवेचा मुलगा यवाब आणि दावीदचे सेवकही बाहेर पडून गिबोनला आले. गिबोनच्या तलावाशी या दोन गटांची गाठ पडली. तलावाच्या दोन बाजूला दोन्ही सैन्ये उतरली.
14And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
14अबनेर यवाबाला म्हणाला, “आपल्यातील तरुण सैनिकांनी उठून समोरासमोर येऊन दोन हात करावे.” यवाब म्हणाला, “ठीक आहे होऊन जाऊ दे.”
15Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
15तेव्हा दोन्ही बाजूचे तरुण सैनिक उठले. त्यांनी आपापली संख्या पाहिली. शौलपुत्र ईश-बोशेथ याच्या बाजूने झुंज द्यायला त्यांनी बन्यामीनच्या वंशातील बाराजण निवडले आणि दावीदाच्या सैन्यातील बाराजणांना घेतले.
16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
16प्रत्येकाने आपल्या प्रतिस्पर्ध्याचे मस्तक धरुन त्याच्या कुशीत तलवार खुपसली. तेव्हा सर्व एकदम पडले. म्हणून त्या जागेचे नाव हेलकथहसूरीम म्हणजेच “धारदार सुऱ्यांचे क्षेत्र” असे पडले हे स्थळ गिबोनमध्ये आहे.
17And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
17त्या दिवशी तेथे तुंबळ युध्द झाले. दावीदाच्या सैन्याने त्या दिवशी अबनेर आणि इस्राएल लोक यांचा पराभव केला.
18And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
18यवाब, अबीशय आणि असाएल हे सरूवेचे तीन पुत्र. त्यापैकी असाएल हा वेगवान धावपटू होता. अगदी रानातल्या हरणासारखा चपळ होता.
19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
19त्याने अबनेरचा पाठलाग सुरु केला. अबनेरचा पाठलाग करताना त्याने डावीकडे अथवा उजवीकडे वळून सुद्धा पाहिले नाही.
20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
20अबनेर ने मागे वळून विचारले, “तू असाएल ना?”
21And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
21(असाएलला इजा होऊ नये असे अबनेरला वाटत होते.) म्हणून तो असाएलला म्हणाला, “माझा पाठलाग थांबव. एखाद्या तरुण सैनिकाला धर. त्याचे चिलखत स्वत:साठी घे.” पण असाएलने त्याचे न ऐकता अबनेरचा पाठलाग चालूच ठेवला.
22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
22पुन्हा अबनेर त्याला म्हणाला, “हा पाठलाग थांबव नाहीतर मला तुला मारावे लागेल आणि तसे झाले तर तुझा भाऊ यवाब याला मी तोंड दाखवू शकणार नाही.”
23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
23तरीही असाएल ऐकेना. तेव्हा अबनेरने आपल्या भाल्याचे मागचे टोक असाएलच्या पोटात खुपसले. भाला सरळ त्याच्या पोटात घुसून पाठीतून निघाला. असाएलला तिथे तात्काळ मृत्यू आला. असाएलचा मृतदेह तिथेच जमिनीवर पडलेला होता. लोकांनी ते पाहिले आणि ते तिथेच थांबले.
24Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
24पण यवाब आणि अबीशय यांनी अबनेरचा पाठलाग चालू ठेवला. ते अम्मा टेकडीपाशी पोहोंचले तेव्हा सूर्य नुकताच मावळत होता. (ही टेकडी गिबोन वाळवंटाच्या रस्त्यावरील गिहा गावासमोर आहे.)
25And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
25बन्यामीनच्या घराण्यातील लोक अबनेरकडे आले आणि या डोंगराच्या शिखरावर उभे राहिले.
26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
26तेव्हा यवाबाला हाक मारून अबनेरने त्याला विचारले, “आपापसातील या प्राणघातक लढाया अशाच चालू ठेवायच्या आहेत का? याचे पर्यवसान दु:खात होणार आहे हे तू जाणतोसच. आपल्याच भाऊबंदांचा पाठलाग थांबवायला तुझ्या लोकांना सांग.”
27And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
27तेव्हा यवाब म्हणाला, “तू हे सुचवलेस ते चांगले झाले नाहीतर, देवाच्या जीविताची शपथ, हे लोक सकाळच्या वेळी आपल्याच बांधवांचा पाठलाग करत राहिले असते.”
28So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
28आणि यवाबाने रणशिंग फुंकले. त्याच्या बाजूच्या लोकांनी इस्राएल लोकांचा पाठलाग थांबवला. एवढेच नव्हे तर त्यांनी पुढे इस्राएलांशी युध्दही केले नाही.
29And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
29अबनेर आणि त्याच्या बरोबरची माणसे यांनी मग रातोरात यार्देन खोऱ्यातून कूच केले. नदी पार करुन महनाइमला पोचेपर्यंत ते वाटचाल करत होते.
30And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
30यवाबाने अबनेरचा पाठलाग थांबवला आणि तो परतला. आपल्या लोकांना त्याने एकत्र केले तेव्हा असाएल धरुन दावीदाच्या सेवकांपैकी एकोणीस जण बेपत्ता असल्याचे त्याला आढळून आले.
31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
31पण दावीदाच्या लोकांनी बन्यामीनच्या कुळातील अबनेरची तीनशे साठ माणसे मारली होती.
32And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
32दावीदाच्या लोकांनी असाएलचे दफन बेथलहेम येथे त्याच्या वडीलांच्या थडग्यातच केले. यवाब आणि त्याची माणसे रात्रभर प्रवास करुन उजाडता उजाडता हेब्रोन येथे पोचली.
