¹And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

¹Men da kom det på Herrens bud en Guds mann til Betel fra Juda, nettop som Jeroboam stod ved alteret for å brenne røkelse.

²And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.

²Og han ropte på Herrens bud mot alteret: Alter! Alter! Så sier Herren: Det skal fødes en sønn for Davids hus, Josias skal han hete, og på dig skal han ofre offerhaugenes prester, som brenner røkelse på dig, og det skal brennes menneskeben på dig.

³And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

³På samme tid forkynte han et tegn og sa: Dette er tegnet på at Herren har talt: Alteret skal revne, og asken som er på det, skal spredes.

⁴And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

⁴Da kong Jeroboam hørte de ord som den Guds mann ropte mot alteret i Betel, rakte han ut sin hånd fra alteret og sa: Grip ham! Men hånden som han rakte ut mot ham, visnet, og han kunde ikke dra den til sig igjen.

⁵The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

⁵Og alteret revnet, og asken spredtes fra alteret; det var det tegn som den Guds mann hadde forkynt på Herrens bud.

⁶And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

⁶Da tok kongen til orde og sa til den Guds mann: Bønnfall Herren din Gud og bed for mig at jeg må kunne dra min hånd til mig igjen! Og den Guds mann bønnfalt Herren, og kongen kunde dra sin hånd til sig igjen - den blev som den hadde vært før.

⁷And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

⁷Da sa kongen til den Guds mann: Kom hjem med mig og vederkveg dig og la mig få gi dig en gave!

⁸And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

⁸Men den Guds mann sa til kongen: Om du gav mig halvdelen av ditt hus, vilde jeg dog ikke gå hjem til dig; på dette sted vil jeg hverken ete brød eller drikke vann.

⁹For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

⁹For dette bud fikk jeg av Herren: Du skal hverken ete brød eller drikke vann*, og du skal ikke vende tilbake den vei du gikk. / {* på dette sted, 1KG 13, 16. 17.}

¹⁰So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

¹⁰Så tok han avsted en annen vei og vendte ikke tilbake den vei han var kommet til Betel.

¹¹Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

¹¹I Betel bodde det en gammel profet; hans sønn kom og fortalte ham alt det som den Guds mann den dag hadde gjort i Betel, og de ord han hadde talt til kongen. Da de* hadde fortalt sin far dette, / {* sønnene.}

¹²And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

¹²spurte han dem: Hvad vei tok han? For hans sønner hadde sett hvad vei han hadde tatt den Guds mann som var kommet fra Juda.

¹³And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

¹³Da sa han til sine sønner: Sal asenet for mig! Så salte de asenet for ham, og han satte sig på det

¹⁴And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

¹⁴og red avsted efter den Guds mann. Han fant ham sittende under en terebinte, og han sa til ham: Er du den Guds mann som er kommet fra Juda? Han svarte: Ja, det er jeg.

¹⁵Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

¹⁵Da sa han til ham: Kom hjem med mig og få dig litt mat!

¹⁶And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

¹⁶Men han sa: Jeg kan ikke vende tilbake med dig og komme hjem til dig; jeg vil hverken ete brød eller drikke vann med dig på dette sted.

¹⁷For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

¹⁷For det kom et ord til mig fra Herren: Du skal hverken ete brød eller drikke vann der; du skal ikke gå tilbake den vei du gikk.

¹⁸He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

¹⁸Da sa han til ham: Jeg er også en profet likesom du, og en engel har talt et ord til mig fra Herren og sagt: Få ham med dig tilbake til ditt hus, så han kan få sig mat og drikke! Men da han sa det, løi han for ham.

¹⁹So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

¹⁹Så vendte han da tilbake med ham og åt og drakk i hans hus.

²⁰And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:

²⁰Men mens de satt til bords, kom Herrens ord til den profet som hadde fått ham med sig tilbake,

²¹And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,

²¹og han ropte til den Guds mann som var kommet fra Juda: Så sier Herren: Fordi du var gjenstridig mot Herrens ord og ikke holdt det bud Herren din Gud gav dig,

²²But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcass shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

²²men vendte tilbake og åt og drakk på det sted hvorom han hadde sagt til dig: Du skal hverken ete brød eller drikke vann der, så skal ditt lik ikke komme i dine fedres grav.

²³And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

²³Da han nu hadde ett og drukket, salte han asenet for ham - for profeten som han hadde fått med sig tilbake.

²⁴And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcass was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcass.

²⁴Og han tok avsted; men på veien kom en løve imot ham og drepte ham; og hans lik lå slengt bortefter veien, og asenet stod ved siden av det og løven stod også ved siden av liket.

²⁵And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcass cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcass: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

²⁵Da fór det nogen menn forbi; de så liket som lå slengt bortefter veien, og løven som stod ved siden av liket; og da de kom til den by hvor den gamle profet bodde, fortalte de det der.

²⁶And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.

²⁶Da profeten som hadde fått ham med tilbake fra veien, hørte det, sa han: Det er den Guds mann som var gjenstridig mot Herrens ord; derfor har Herren gitt ham i løvens vold, og den har sønderrevet ham og drept ham efter det ord som Herren hadde talt til ham.

²⁷And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

²⁷Derefter sa han til sine sønner: Sal asenet for mig: Så salte de det.

²⁸And he went and found his carcass cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcass: the lion had not eaten the carcass, nor torn the ass.

²⁸Og han tok avsted og fant hans lik slengt bortefter veien og asenet og løven stående ved siden av liket; løven hadde ikke fortært liket og heller ikke sønderrevet asenet.

²⁹And the prophet took up the carcass of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

²⁹Da tok profeten op liket av den Guds mann og la ham på asenet og førte ham tilbake; og den gamle profet gikk inn i sin by for å holde sørgehøitid over ham og begrave ham.

³⁰And he laid his carcass in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

³⁰Han la hans lik i sin egen grav, og de holdt sørgehøitid over ham og ropte: Ve, min bror!

³¹And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

³¹Da han nu hadde begravet ham, sa han til sine sønner: Når jeg dør, skal I begrave mig i den grav hvor den Guds mann ligger begravet; I skal legge mine ben ved siden av hans ben.

³²For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

³²For det ord skal gå i opfyllelse som han på Herrens bud ropte mot alteret i Betel og mot alle offerhaugenes helligdommer i Samarias byer.

³³After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

³³Men heller ikke efter dette vendte Jeroboam om fra sin onde vei, men blev ved å gjøre hvem han vilde av folket til prester ved offerhaugene; han fylte* alle deres hender som hadde lyst dertil, så de blev prester ved haugene. / {* 2MO 28, 41.}

³⁴And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

³⁴Og dette blev årsak til synd for Jeroboams hus og til at det blev utryddet og utslettet av jorden.
