¹And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

¹Lang tid derefter - i det tredje år - kom Herrens ord til Elias, og det lød således: Gå og tred frem for Akab, så vil jeg sende regn over jorden.

²And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

³And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

³Da kalte Akab på sin slottshøvding Obadja. Men Obadja fryktet Herren høilig;

⁴For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁴dengang Jesabel utryddet Herrens profeter, hadde Obadja tatt hundre profeter og skjult dem i to huler, femti mann i hver hule, og forsørget dem med brød og vann.

⁵And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

⁵Akab sa da til Obadja: Dra gjennem landet til alle kilder og bekker! Kanskje vi finner gress, så vi kan holde liv i hester og mulesler og slipper å slakte noget av buskapen.

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁶Så delte de landet som de skulde dra igjennem, mellem sig; Akab drog en vei for sig, og Obadja drog en annen vei for sig.

⁷And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

⁷Mens nu Obadja var på veien, fikk han se Elias som kom imot ham; han kjente ham igjen og falt ned på sitt ansikt og sa: Er det du, min herre Elias?

⁸And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

⁹And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

⁹Men han sa: Hvad synd har jeg gjort, siden du overgir din tjener i Akabs hånd, så han dreper mig?

¹⁰As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹⁰Så sant Herren din Gud lever: Det finnes ikke det folk eller det rike som min herre ikke har sendt bud til for å opsøke dig; og når de sa: Han er ikke her, lot han det rike og det folk sverge på at de ikke hadde funnet dig.

¹¹And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

¹¹Og nu sier du: Gå og si til din herre: Elias er her!

¹²And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

¹²Det vil gå så, at når jeg nu går fra dig, og Herrens Ånd rykker dig bort til et sted som jeg ikke vet, og jeg kommer og sier det til Akab, og han så ikke finner dig, da dreper han mig. Og din tjener har dog fryktet Herren fra ungdommen av.

¹³Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹³Er det ikke blitt min herre fortalt hvad jeg gjorde dengang Jesabel drepte Herrens profeter? Da skjulte jeg hundre av Herrens profeter i to huler, femti mann i hver hule, og forsørget dem med brød og vann.

¹⁴And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

¹⁴Og nu sier du: Gå og si til din herre: Elias er her! Og så dreper han mig.

¹⁵And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to day.

¹⁵Da sa Elias: Så sant Herren, hærskarenes Gud, lever, han hvis tjener jeg er: Idag skal jeg trede frem for ham.

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁶Så gikk Obadja Akab i møte og sa det til ham; og Akab gikk Elias i møte.

¹⁷And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

¹⁷Med det samme Akab fikk se Elias, sa han til ham: Er det du, du som fører ødeleggelse over Israel?

¹⁸And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

¹⁸Han svarte: Jeg har ikke ført ødeleggelse over Israel, men du og din fars hus, fordi I har forlatt Herrens bud og fulgt Ba'alene.

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

¹⁹Men send nu bud og la hele Israel komme sammen til mig på Karmel-fjellet og de fire hundre og femti Ba'als profeter og de fire hundre Astartes profeter som eter ved Jesabels bord!

²⁰So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

²⁰Så sendte Akab bud omkring blandt alle Israels barn og bød profetene komme sammen til Karmel-fjellet.

²¹And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

²¹Da trådte Elias frem for alt folket og sa: Hvor lenge vil I halte til begge sider? Dersom Herren er Gud, så følg ham, og dersom Ba'al er det, så følg ham! Men folket svarte ham ikke et ord.

²²Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

²²Og Elias sa til folket: Jeg er den eneste av Herrens profeter som er blitt tilbake, mens Ba'als profeter er fire hundre og femti mann.

²³Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

²³La oss nu få to okser, og la så dem velge sig den ene okse og hugge den i stykker og legge den på veden, men de skal ikke tende ild på; og jeg vil stelle til den andre okse og legge den på veden, men jeg vil ikke tende ild på.

²⁴And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

²⁴Påkall så I eders guds navn, og jeg vil påkalle Herrens navn, og det skal være så, at den gud som svarer med ild, han er Gud. Og alt folket svarte og sa: Det er rett!

²⁵And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

²⁵Da sa Elias til Ba'als profeter: Velg nu I eder den ene okse og stell den til først, siden I er flest, og påkall så eders guds navn! Men I skal ikke tende ild på.

²⁶And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

²⁶Sa tok de den okse han hadde gitt dem, og stelte den til og påkalte Ba'als navn fra morgen til middag og ropte: Ba'al, svar oss! Men det hørtes ingen røst, og det var ikke nogen som svarte; og de hinket omkring det alter de hadde gjort.

²⁷And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

²⁷Men da det var blitt middag, spottet Elias dem og sa: Rop høiere! Han er jo Gud; han er vel falt i tanker, eller han er gått avsides eller er ute på reise; kanskje han sover - så vil han vel våkne.

²⁸And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

²⁸Da ropte de ennu høiere og flengte sig, som det var deres vis, med sverd og spyd, til blodet rant nedover dem.

²⁹And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

²⁹Da det led over middag, raste de til bortimot den tid matofferet blir frembåret; men det hørtes ingen røst, og det var ikke nogen som svarte, og ikke nogen som aktet på dem.

³⁰And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

³⁰Da sa Elias til alt folket: Tred hit til mig! Og alt folket trådte frem til ham, og han satte i stand Herrens alter, som var nedrevet.

³¹And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

³¹Og Elias tok tolv stener efter tallet på Jakobs barns stammer, han til hvem Herrens ord var kommet og hadde lydt således: Israel skal være ditt navn.

³²And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

³²Og han bygget av stenene et alter i Herrens navn og gjorde en grøft rundt om alteret så stor som til omkring to måls utsæd.

³³And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

³³Så la han veden til rette og hugg oksen i stykker og la den ovenpå veden.

³⁴And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

³⁴Og han sa: Fyll fire krukker med vann og øs det ut over brennofferet og over veden! Så sa han: Gjør det en gang til! Og de gjorde det annen gang! Så sa han: Gjør det tredje gang! Og de gjorde det tredje gang.

³⁵And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

³⁵Og vannet fløt rundt om alteret, og han fylte også grøften med vann.

³⁶And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

³⁶Men ved den tid matofferet blir båret frem, trådte profeten Elias frem og sa: Herre, Abrahams, Isaks og Israels Gud! La det idag bli vitterlig at du er Gud i Israel, og at jeg er din tjener, og at det er på ditt ord jeg har gjort alt dette!

³⁷Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

³⁷Svar mig, Herre, svar mig, så dette folk må kjenne at du, Herre, er Gud, og at du nu vender deres hjerte tilbake til dig!

³⁸Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁸Da falt Herrens ild ned og fortærte brennofferet og veden og stenene og jorden og slikket op vannet som var i grøften.

³⁹And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

³⁹Og alt folket så det, og de falt ned på sitt ansikt og sa: Herren, han er Gud! Herren, han er Gud!

⁴⁰And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

⁴⁰Da sa Elias til dem: Grip Ba'als profeter, la ingen av dem slippe herifra! Og de grep dem, og Elias førte dem ned til bekken Kison og lot dem drepe der.

⁴¹And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

⁴¹Så sa Elias til Akab: Gå nu op og et og drikk! For jeg hører regnet suse.

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

⁴²Da gikk Akab op for å ete og drikke. Men Elias gikk op på Karmels topp og bøide sig mot jorden med ansiktet mellem sine knær.

⁴³And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

⁴³Så sa han til sin dreng: Stig op og se ut mot havet! Og han steg op og så ut, men sa: Det er ikke noget å se. Syv ganger sa han: Gå dit igjen!

⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

⁴⁴Den syvende gang sa han: Se, en liten sky, så stor som en manns hånd, stiger op fra havet. Da sa han: Gå op og si til Akab: Spenn for og far ned, så ikke regnet skal opholde dig!

⁴⁵And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

⁴⁵Og i en håndvending sortnet himmelen til med skyer og storm, og det kom et sterkt regn; og Akab kjørte avsted og for til Jisre'el.

⁴⁶And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

⁴⁶Men Herrens hånd kom over Elias; han omgjordet sine lender og sprang foran Akab like til Jisre'el.
