¹So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

¹Og Abia la sig til hvile hos sine fedre og blev begravet i Davids stad, og hans sønn Asa blev konge i hans sted. I hans dager hadde landet ro i ti år.

²And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:

²Asa gjorde hvad godt og rett var i Herrens, hans Guds øine.

³For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:

³Han fikk bort de fremmede guders altere og offerhaugene og sønderbrøt støttene og hugg Astartebilledene i stykker.

⁴And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

⁴Og han bød Juda å søke Herren, deres fedres Gud, og holde loven og budene.

⁵Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

⁵I alle Judas byer fikk han bort offerhaugene og solstøttene, og riket hadde ro under ham.

⁶And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.

⁶Han bygget festninger i Juda; for landet hadde ro, og ingen førte krig mot ham i de år, fordi Herren gav ham ro.

⁷Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

⁷Han sa til Juda: La oss bygge disse byer og reise murer og tårner, porter og bommer omkring dem! Ennu råder vi fritt over landet, fordi vi har søkt Herren vår Gud; vi har søkt ham, og han har gitt oss ro på alle kanter. Så tok de til å bygge, og det lyktes for dem.

⁸And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.

⁸Asas hær var tre hundre tusen mann av Juda, som var væbnet med spyd og store skjold, og to hundre og åtti tusen av Benjamin, som bar små skjold og skjøt med bue; de var alle djerve stridsmenn.

⁹And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.

⁹Men etioperen Serah drog ut imot dem med en hær på tusen ganger tusen mann og tre hundre stridsvogner, og han kom til Maresa.

¹⁰Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

¹⁰Og Asa drog ut imot ham, og de stilte sig i fylking i Sefata-dalen ved Maresa.

¹¹And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee.

¹¹Da ropte Asa til Herren sin Gud og sa: Herre, for dig gjør det ingen forskjell, enten du hjelper den mektige eller den maktesløse. Hjelp oss, Herre vår Gud! Til dig setter vi vår lit, og i ditt navn er vi gått mot denne store mengde. Herre, du er vår Gud; la ikke et menneske stå sig imot dig!

¹²So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

¹²Da lot Herren etioperne bli slått av Asa og Juda, og etioperne flyktet.

¹³And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.

¹³Asa og hans folk forfulgte dem like til Gerar, og av etioperne falt det så mange at ingen av dem blev i live; de blev knust av Herren og hans hær. Og de førte et umåtelig stort hærfang bort med sig.

¹⁴And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.

¹⁴Og de inntok alle byene rundt omkring Gerar, for frykt for Herren var kommet over dem, og de plyndret alle byene, for det var meget å plyndre i dem.

¹⁵They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

¹⁵Endog teltene for buskapen tok de, og de førte bort en mengde med småfe og kameler, og så vendte de tilbake til Jerusalem.
