¹Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

²And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

²Der åpenbarte Herrens engel sig for ham i en luende ild, midt ut av en tornebusk; og han så op, og se, tornebusken stod i lys lue, men tornebusken brente ikke op.

³And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

³Og Moses sa: Jeg vil gå bort og se dette vidunderlige syn, hvorfor tornebusken ikke brenner op.

⁴And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

⁴Da Herren så at han gikk bort for å se, ropte Gud til ham midt ut av tornebusken og sa: Moses, Moses! Og han svarte: Ja, her er jeg.

⁵And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

⁵Da sa han: Kom ikke nærmere, dra dine sko av dine føtter! For det sted du står på, er hellig jord.

⁶Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

⁶Så sa han: Jeg er din fars Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud. Da skjulte Moses sitt ansikt, for han fryktet for å skue Gud.

⁷And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

⁷Og Herren sa: Jeg har sett mitt folks nød i Egypten, og jeg har hørt deres klagerop over arbeidsfogdene; jeg vet hvad de lider.

⁸And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

⁸Og nu er jeg steget ned for å utfri dem av egypternes hånd og for å føre dem op fra dette land til et godt og vidtstrakt land, til et land som flyter med melk og honning, det land hvor kana'anittene bor og hetittene og amorittene og ferisittene og hevittene og jebusittene.

⁹Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

⁹Nu er Israels barns skrik nådd op til mig, og jeg har også sett hvorledes egypterne mishandler dem.

¹⁰Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

¹⁰Så gå nu du avsted, jeg vil sende dig til Farao, og du skal føre mitt folk, Israels barn, ut av Egypten!

¹¹And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

¹¹Men Moses sa til Gud: Hvem er jeg, at jeg skulde gå til Farao, og at jeg skulde føre Israels barn ut av Egypten?

¹²And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

¹²Og han sa: Sannelig, jeg vil være med dig, og dette skal være dig et tegn på at jeg har sendt dig: Når du har ført folket ut av Egypten, da skal I holde gudstjeneste på dette fjell.

¹³And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

¹³Da sa Moses til Gud: Men når jeg nu kommer til Israels barn og sier til dem: Eders fedres Gud har sendt mig til eder, og de så spør mig: Hvad er hans navn? - hvad skal jeg da svare dem?

¹⁴And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

¹⁴Og Gud sa til Moses: Jeg er den jeg er ; og han sa: Så skal du si til Israels barn: "Jeg er" har sendt mig til eder.

¹⁵And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

¹⁵Og Gud sa fremdeles til Moses: Så skal du si til Israels barn: Herren*, eders fedres Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud, har sendt mig til eder. Dette er mitt navn til evig tid, og så skal de kalle mig fra slekt til slekt. / {* Jahve d.e. han er, 2MO 3, 14. JES 42, 8. SLM 135, 13.}

¹⁶Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:

¹⁶Gå nu og kall sammen de eldste i Israel og si til dem: Herren, eders fedres Gud, har åpenbaret sig for mig, Abrahams, Isaks og Jakobs Gud, og sagt: Jeg har sett til eder og vet hvorledes de farer frem mot eder i Egypten.

¹⁷And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.

¹⁷Og jeg sa: Jeg vil føre eder ut av alt det onde I lider i Egypten, til kana'anittenes og hetittenes og amorittenes og ferisittenes og hevittenes og jebusittenes land, til et land som flyter med melk og honning.

¹⁸And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.

¹⁸Og de skal høre på dine ord, og du skal gå inn til kongen i Egypten, du og de eldste i Israel, og I skal si til ham: Herren, hebreernes Gud, har møtt oss; la oss nu gå tre dagsreiser ut i ørkenen og ofre til Herren vår Gud.

¹⁹And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.

¹⁹Men jeg vet at kongen i Egypten ikke vil gi eder lov til å dra ut, ikke engang om han får kjenne en sterk hånd over sig.

²⁰And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.

²⁰Derfor vil jeg rekke ut min hånd og slå Egypten med alle mine under, som jeg vil gjøre midt iblandt dem; så skal han la eder fare.

²¹And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty.

²¹Og jeg vil la dette folk finne yndest hos egypterne, så I, når I drar ut, ikke skal dra tomhendt bort;

²²But every woman shall borrow of her neighbor, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.

²²men enhver kvinne skal be sin grannekvinne og den som bor i hennes hus, om smykker av sølv og gull og om klær, og I skal la eders sønner og eders døtre ta dem på sig; dette er det bytte I skal ta av egypterne.
