¹And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

¹Men da folket så at Moses drygde med å komme ned fra fjellet, samlet folket sig om Aron og sa til ham: Kom, gjør oss en gud som kan dra foran oss! For denne Moses, han som førte oss op fra Egyptens land - vi vet ikke hvad det er blitt av ham.

²And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

²Da sa Aron til dem: Ta gullringene som eders hustruer, eders sønner og eders døtre har i sine ører, og kom til mig med dem!

³And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

³Da tok alt folket gullringene ut av sine ører og kom til Aron med dem;

⁴And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

⁴og han tok imot gullet og støpte det om og laget det med meiselen til en kalv. Da sa de: Dette er din Gud, Israel, som førte dig op fra Egyptens land.

⁵And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.

⁵Da Aron så dette, bygget han et alter for den og lot utrope: Imorgen er det høitid for Herren!

⁶And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

⁶Dagen efter stod de tidlig op og ofret brennoffer og bar frem takkoffer; og folket satte sig ned for å ete og drikke og stod op for å leke.

⁷And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

⁷Da sa Herren til Moses: Skynd dig og stig ned! Ditt folk, som du har ført op fra Egyptens land, har fordervet sin vei.

⁸They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

⁸De er hastig veket av fra den vei jeg bød dem å vandre; de har gjort sig en støpt kalv; den har de tilbedt og ofret til og sagt: Dette er din Gud, Israel, som førte dig op fra Egyptens land.

⁹And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

⁹Og Herren sa til Moses: Jeg har lagt merke til dette folk og sett at det er et hårdnakket folk.

¹⁰Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

¹⁰La nu mig få råde, så min vrede kan optendes mot dem, og jeg kan ødelegge dem; så vil jeg gjøre dig til et stort folk.

¹¹And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

¹¹Men Moses bønnfalt Herren sin Gud og sa: Herre! Hvorfor skal din vrede optendes mot ditt folk, som du har ført ut av Egyptens land med stor kraft og med veldig hånd?

¹²Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

¹²Hvorfor skal egypterne si: Til ulykke har han ført dem ut; han vilde slå dem ihjel i fjellene og utrydde dem av jorden? Vend om fra din brennende vrede og angre det onde du har tenkt å gjøre mot ditt folk!

¹³Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

¹³Kom i hu dine tjenere Abraham, Isak og Israel, til hvem du har sagt og svoret ved dig selv: Jeg vil gjøre eders ætt tallrik som stjernene på himmelen, og hele dette land som jeg har talt om, vil jeg gi eders ætt, og de skal eie det til evig tid.

¹⁴And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

¹⁴Så angret Herren det onde han hadde talt om å gjøre mot sitt folk.

¹⁵And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

¹⁵Og Moses vendte sig og gikk ned fra fjellet med vidnesbyrdets to tavler i sin hånd, og på begge sider av tavlene var der skrevet; både på forsiden og baksiden var der skrevet.

¹⁶And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

¹⁶Og tavlene var Guds arbeid, og skriften var Guds skrift, som var inngravd på tavlene.

¹⁷And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

¹⁷Da Josva hørte hvorledes folket støiet og skrek, sa han til Moses: Det lyder krigsrop i leiren.

¹⁸And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

¹⁸Men han svarte: Det lyder ikke som seiersrop og ikke som skrik over mannefall; det er lyd av sang jeg hører.

¹⁹And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

¹⁹Og da Moses kom nær til leiren, så han kalven og dansen; da optendtes hans vrede; han kastet tavlene fra sig og slo dem i stykker ved foten av fjellet.

²⁰And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

²⁰Og han tok kalven som de hadde gjort, og kastet den på ilden og knuste den til den blev til støv, og støvet strødde han ovenpå vannet og gav Israels barn det å drikke.

²¹And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

²¹Så sa Moses til Aron: Hvad har dette folk gjort dig, siden du har ført så stor en synd over det?

²²And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

²²Aron svarte: La ikke din vrede optendes, herre! Du vet selv at dette folk ligger i det onde;

²³For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

²³de sa til mig: Gjør oss en gud som kan dra foran oss! For denne Moses, han som førte oss op fra Egyptens land - vi vet ikke hvad det er blitt av ham.

²⁴And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

²⁴Da sa jeg til dem: Den som har gullsmykker på sig, ta dem av sig! Så gav de mig dem, og jeg kastet dem på ilden, og således blev denne kalv til.

²⁵And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

²⁵Da Moses så at folket var ustyrlig - for Aron hadde sloppet det løs til spott for deres motstandere -

²⁶Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

²⁶så stilte han sig i porten til leiren og sa: Hver den som hører Herren til, han komme hit til mig! Da samlet alle Levis barn sig om ham.

²⁷And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

²⁷Og han sa til dem: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Hver binde sitt sverd ved sin lend! Gå så frem og tilbake fra port til port i leiren og slå ihjel hver sin bror og hver sin venn og hver sin frende!

²⁸And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

²⁸Og Levis barn gjorde som Moses sa; og den dag falt det av folket omkring tre tusen mann.

²⁹For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

²⁹For Moses sa: Innvi eder idag til prester for Herren, om det så er med blodet av sønn eller bror; så skal han idag gi eder sin velsignelse.

³⁰And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

³⁰Dagen efter sa Moses til folket: I har gjort en stor synd. Nu vil jeg stige op til Herren; kanskje jeg kunde gjøre soning for eders synd.

³¹And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

³¹Så vendte Moses tilbake til Herren og sa: Akk, dette folk har gjort en stor synd; de har gjort sig en gud av gull.

³²Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

³²Å, om du vilde forlate dem deres synd! Men hvis ikke, da slett mig ut av din bok som du har skrevet!

³³And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

³³Da sa Herren til Moses: Hver den som har syndet mot mig, ham vil jeg slette ut av min bok.

³⁴Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

³⁴Så gå nu og før folket dit jeg har sagt dig! Se, min engel skal gå foran dig, men på min hjemsøkelses dag vil jeg hjemsøke dem for deres synd.

³⁵And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

³⁵Således slo Herren folket fordi de hadde gjort kalven - den som Aron hadde laget.
