¹And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

¹Da de nu fikk høre dette alle kongene som bodde vestenfor Jordan, i fjellbygdene og i lavlandet og på hele kysten av det store hav til midt for Libanon - hetittene og amorittene, kana'anittene, ferisittene, hevittene og jebusittene -

²That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

²da samlet de sig alle som én for å stride mot Josva og Israel.

³And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

³Men da innbyggerne i Gibeon hørte hvad Josva hadde gjort med Jeriko og Ai,

⁴They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

⁴da gikk de på sin side frem med list: De tok avsted og gav sig ut for sendebud; de la utslitte sekker på sine asener og utslitte, sprukne og bøtede vinsekker;

⁵And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

⁵de tok utslitte og lappede sko på sine føtter og hadde utslitte klær på sig, og alt brødet de hadde til reisekost, var tørt og smuldret.

⁶And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

⁶Således drog de til Josva i leiren ved Gilgal og sa til ham og Israels menn: Vi kommer fra et land langt borte; gjør nu en pakt med oss!

⁷And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

⁷Da sa Israels menn til hevittene: Kanskje bor I her midt iblandt oss; hvorledes kan vi da gjøre nogen pakt med eder?

⁸And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

⁸Da sa de til Josva: Vi vil være dine tjenere. Og Josva sa til dem: Hvem er I, og hvor kommer I fra?

⁹And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

⁹De svarte: Dine tjenere kommer fra et land langt, langt borte, for Herrens, din Guds navns skyld; for vi har hørt ryktet om ham og alt det han har gjort i Egypten,

¹⁰And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

¹⁰og alt det han har gjort med begge amoritter-kongene østenfor Jordan, Sihon, kongen i Hesbon, og Og, kongen i Basan, som bodde i Astarot.

¹¹Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

¹¹Derfor sa våre eldste og alle vårt lands innbyggere til oss: Ta reisekost med eder og gå dem i møte og si til dem: Vi vil være eders tjenere; gjør nu en pakt med oss!

¹²This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

¹²Her ser I vårt brød; det var varmt da vi tok det med oss hjemmefra til reisekost den dag vi drog avsted til eder, men se nu hvor tørt og smuldret det er!

¹³And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

¹³Og her ser I våre vinsekker; de var nye da vi fylte dem, men nu er de sprukket! Og her ser I våre klær og våre sko; de er blitt utslitt på denne lange, lange reise.

¹⁴And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

¹⁴Da tok mennene og smakte på deres reisekost; men Herren spurte de ikke til råds.

¹⁵And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

¹⁵Og Josva tilsa dem fred og gjorde pakt med dem om at de skulde få leve; og menighetens høvdinger tilsvor dem det.

¹⁶And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.

¹⁶Men da tre dager var gått efterat de hadde gjort pakt med dem, fikk de vite at de hørte hjemme der i nærheten og bodde midt iblandt dem.

¹⁷And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

¹⁷For da Israels barn brøt op, kom de den tredje dag til deres byer; det var Gibeon og Hakkefira og Be'erot og Kirjat-Jearim.

¹⁸And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

¹⁸Men Israels barn slo dem ikke ihjel, fordi menighetens høvdinger hadde tilsvoret dem fred ved Herren, Israels Gud. Da knurret hele menigheten mot høvdingene;

¹⁹But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

¹⁹men alle høvdingene sa til hele menigheten: Vi har tilsvoret dem fred ved Herren, Israels Gud, og nu kan vi ikke legge hånd på dem.

²⁰This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

²⁰Således vil vi gjøre med dem: Vi vil la dem få leve, forat det ikke skal komme vrede over oss for den eds skyld som vi har svoret dem.

²¹And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

²¹Høvdingene sa altså til dem*: De skal få leve. Så blev de vedhuggere og vannbærere for hele menigheten, således som høvdingene hadde sagt til dem*. / {* Israels menighet.}

²²And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

²²Da kalte Josva dem for sig og sa til dem: Hvorfor narret I oss og sa: Vi bor langt, langt borte fra eder, og så bor I midt iblandt oss?

²³Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

²³Derfor skal I nu være forbannet; ingen av eder skal slippe for å være træl og hugge ved og bære vann til min Guds hus.

²⁴And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

²⁴De svarte Josva og sa: Dine tjenere hadde fått vite at Herren din Gud hadde sagt til Moses, sin tjener, at han vilde gi eder hele landet og utrydde alle landets innbyggere for eder; da blev vi så redde for at I skulde ta vårt liv; derfor gjorde vi dette.

²⁵And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

²⁵Men nu er vi i din hånd; gjør med oss som det er godt og rett i dine øine!

²⁶And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

²⁶Og han gjorde således* med dem; han reddet dem av Israels barns hånd, så de ikke slo dem ihjel; / {* JOS 9, 21.}

²⁷And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

²⁷men Josva gjorde dem på den samme dag til vedhuggere og vannbærere for menigheten og for Herrens alter, på det sted han vilde utvelge, og det har de vært til denne dag.
