¹And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

¹Men folket knurret, og dette mishaget Herren; for da Herren hørte det, blev hans vrede optendt, og ild fra Herren slo ned mellem dem og fortærte nogen ytterst i leiren.

²And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

²Da ropte folket til Moses, og Moses bad til Herren, og ilden blev slukket.

³And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

³Og han kalte dette sted Tabera*, fordi Herrens ild hadde slått ned mellem dem. / {* brand.}

⁴And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

⁴Men den sammenløpne hop som fulgte med dem, blev grepet av lystenhet; også Israels barn begynte da atter å jamre sig og sa: Å, om vi hadde kjøtt å ete!

⁵We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic:

⁵Vi minnes fisken som vi åt i Egypten for intet, gresskarene og melonene og purren og rødløken og hvitløken.

⁶But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

⁶Men nu vansmekter vår sjel, for her er ingenting; Vi ser ikke annet for våre øine enn mannaen.

⁷And the manna was as coriander seed, and the color thereof as the color of bdellium.

⁷Mannaen lignet korianderfrø, og av utseende var den som bdellium.

⁸And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

⁸Folket løp hit og dit og sanket og malte den på håndkvern eller støtte den i morter og kokte den i gryter eller bakte kaker av den, og den smakte som oljekake.

⁹And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

⁹Når duggen falt ned over leiren om natten, da falt mannaen ned sammen med den.

¹⁰Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

¹⁰Og Moses hørte folket gråte rundt om i alle familier, enhver i døren til sitt telt, og Herrens vrede optendtes storlig; og Moses blev ille til mote derover.

¹¹And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

¹¹Da sa Moses til Herren: Hvorfor har du gjort så ille mot din tjener, og hvorfor har jeg ikke funnet nåde for dine øine, siden du har lagt byrden av hele dette folk på mig?

¹²Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

¹²Har jeg undfanget hele dette folk, har jeg født det, siden du sier jeg skal bære det i min favn, likesom ammen bærer det diende barn, og føre det til det land du har tilsvoret dets fedre?

¹³Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

¹³Hvor skal jeg ta kjøtt fra til hele dette folk? For de kommer gråtende til mig og sier: Gi oss kjøtt å ete!

¹⁴I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

¹⁴Jeg makter ikke å bære hele dette folk alene; det er mig for tungt.

¹⁵And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

¹⁵Vil du gjøre således mot mig, så drep mig heller med én gang, dersom jeg har funnet nåde for dine øine, og la mig slippe å se min ulykke!

¹⁶And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.

¹⁶Da sa Herren til Moses: Kall mig sammen sytti menn av Israels eldste, de som du vet er folkets eldste og dets tilsynsmenn, og du skal ta dem med dig til sammenkomstens telt, og la dem stille sig op der sammen med dig.

¹⁷And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

¹⁷Så vil jeg komme ned og tale med dig der, og jeg vil ta av den ånd som er over dig, og legge på dem, så de kan bære byrden av folket sammen med dig, og du ikke skal bære den alene.

¹⁸And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

¹⁸Og til folket skal du si: Hellige eder til imorgen, så skal I få kjøtt å ete, siden I har grått for Herren og sagt: Å, om vi hadde kjøtt å ete, for i Egypten hadde vi det godt. Nu vil Herren gi eder kjøtt, så I kan ete.

¹⁹Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;

¹⁹Ikke bare én dag skal I ete av det, og ikke to dager og ikke fem dager og ikke tyve dager,

²⁰But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

²⁰men en hel måned, til I ikke lenger tåler lukten av det, og det byr eder imot, fordi I foraktet Herren, som er midt iblandt eder, og gråt for hans åsyn og sa: Hvorfor drog vi da ut av Egypten?

²¹And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

²¹Og Moses sa: Seks hundre tusen mann til fots teller det folk som jeg følges med, og du sier: Jeg vil gi dem kjøtt, så de kan ete en hel måned!

²²Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

²²Skal der da slaktes så meget småfe og storfe til dem at det blir nok for dem? Eller skal alle fiskene i havet sankes sammen til dem, så det blir nok for dem?

²³And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD's hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

²³Da sa Herren til Moses: Er Herrens arm for kort? Nu skal du få se om det vil gå dig som jeg har sagt, eller ikke.

²⁴And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

²⁴Så gikk Moses ut og kunngjorde Herrens ord for folket, og han samlet sytti menn av folkets eldste og lot dem stille sig rundt om teltet.

²⁵And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

²⁵Da kom Herren ned i skyen og talte til ham, og han tok av den ånd som var over ham, og la på de sytti eldste, og det skjedde da ånden hvilte over dem, da talte de profetiske ord, men siden gjorde de det ikke mere.

²⁶But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.

²⁶Men det var to menn blitt tilbake i leiren, den ene hette Eldad, og den andre Medad, og ånden hvilte over dem, for de var blandt de opskrevne, men de var ikke gått ut til teltet; og de talte profetisk i leiren.

²⁷And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

²⁷Da løp en gutt ut og meldte det til Moses og sa: Eldad og Medad taler profetisk i leiren.

²⁸And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

²⁸Og Josva, Nuns sønn, som hadde tjent Moses fra sin ungdom av, tok til orde og sa: Min herre Moses, forbyd dem det!

²⁹And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

²⁹Men Moses sa til ham: Er du nidkjær for min skyld? Gid alt Herrens folk var profeter, gid Herren vilde legge sin Ånd på dem!

³⁰And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

³⁰Så gikk Moses tilbake til leiren, både han og de eldste av Israel.

³¹And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

³¹Da brøt det løs en storm fra Herren, og den førte vaktler inn fra havet og strødde dem over leiren, omkring en dagsreise på den ene kant og omkring en dagsreise på den andre kant rundt om leiren og omkring to alen over jordens overflate.

³²And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

³²Da stod folket op og gikk hele den dag og hele natten og hele den næste dag og sanket vaktlene; den som hadde samlet minst, hadde sanket ti homer. Og de bredte dem ut rundt om leiren.

³³And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

³³Men mens kjøttet ennu var mellem deres tenner, før det var helt fortært, optendtes Herrens vrede mot folket, og Herren lot det bli et meget stort mannefall blandt folket.

³⁴And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

³⁴Og de kalte dette sted Kibrot Hatta'ava*, fordi de der begravde dem som hadde vært så lystne. / {* lystenhets graver.}

³⁵And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.

³⁵Fra Kibrot-Hatta'ava brøt folket op til Haserot, og de blev i Haserot.
