¹And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

¹ در همان روز بعد از گفت‌وگوی شائول با داوود، یوناتان علاقه زیادی به داوود پیدا کرد، به حدّی که او را به اندازهٔ جان خود، دوست می‌داشت.

²And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

² شائول، داوود را پیش خود نگاه ‌داشت و نگذاشت که به خانهٔ پدر خود بازگردد.

³Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

³ یوناتان به‌خاطر علاقهٔ زیادی که به داوود داشت با او پیمان دوستی بست.

⁴And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

⁴ یوناتان ردای خود و همچنین کمربند، کمان و شمشیر خود را نیز به داوود بخشید.

⁵And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

⁵ داوود در هر مأموریتی که شائول به او می‌داد، موفّق می‌شد. بنابراین شائول او را فرماندهٔ سپاه خود نمود. از این امر هم مردم خوشحال و راضی بودند و هم سپاهیان.

⁶And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.

⁶ هنگامی‌که داوود و سربازان، پس از کشته شدن جلیات برمی‌گشتند، زنها از تمام شهرهای اسرائیل با ساز و آواز به استقبال شائول پادشاه آمدند.

⁷And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

⁷ رقص‌کنان با شادی این سرود را می‌خواندند: «شائول هزاران نفر را و داوود ده‌ها هزار نفر را کشته است.»

⁸And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

⁸ شائول از شنیدن این سرود، سخت خشمگین شد و با خود گفت: «آنها به داوود ده‌ها هزار نفر را و به من فقط هزاران نفر را نسبت می‌دهند. قدم بعدی این است که او را پادشاه سازند.»

⁹And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

⁹ بنابراین از همان روز کینهٔ داوود را به دل گرفت.

¹⁰And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

¹⁰ روز دیگر روح پلیدی از جانب خدا بر شائول آمد و او را در خانه‌اش پریشان خاطر ساخت. داوود برای اینکه او را آرام سازد، مانند سابق برایش چنگ می‌نواخت.

¹¹And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

¹¹ امّا شائول نیزه‌ای را که در دست داشت به سوی داوود پرتاب کرد تا او را به دیوار میخکوب کند، ولی داوود، دو بار خود را کنار کشید.

¹²And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

¹² شائول از داوود می‌ترسید، زیرا خدا با او بود ولی شائول را ترک کرده بود.

¹³Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

¹³ پس شائول او را از پیشگاه خود بیرون کرد و به رتبهٔ فرمانده سپاه هزار نفری گماشت. داوود مردان خود را در جبهه رهبری می‌نمود.

¹⁴And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

¹⁴ او در هر کاری که می‌کرد، موفّق می‌شد‌؛ زیرا خداوند با او بود.

¹⁵Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

¹⁵ وقتی شائول موفقیّت او را در همهٔ کارها دید، از او بیشتر ترسید.

¹⁶But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

¹⁶ امّا همهٔ مردم اسرائیل و یهودا، داوود را دوست می‌داشتند، چون او رهبر موفّقی بود.

¹⁷And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

¹⁷ روزی شائول به داوود گفت: «می‌خواهم دختر بزرگ خود میرب را به عقد تو درآورم به شرط اینکه تو شجاعت و دلاوری خود را در جنگهای خداوند ثابت کنی.» هدف شائول این بود که داوود به دست فلسطینیان کشته شود، نه به دست خود او.

¹⁸And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

¹⁸ داوود گفت: «من چه کسی هستم و خاندان پدرم و قوم من کیست که داماد پادشاه شوم؟»

¹⁹But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

¹⁹ امّا وقتی‌که داوود آماده شد که با میرب، دختر شائول عروسی کند، معلوم شد که او را به عدرئیل محولاتی داده بودند.

²⁰And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

²⁰ در عین حال میکال دختر دیگر شائول عاشق داوود بود. چون به شائول خبر رسید، خوشحال شد.

²¹And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

²¹ او با خود گفت: «دختر خود را به داوود می‌دهم تا دامی برای او گردد و او به دست فلسطینیان کشته شود.» بنابراین شائول برای بار دوم به داوود پیشنهاد کرد که دامادش بشود.

²²And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.

²² او به خادمان خود گفت که به طور خصوصی و محرمانه به داوود بگویند: «پادشاه از تو بسیار راضی است و همهٔ کارکنان او هم تو را دوست دارند. پس حالا باید پیشنهاد پادشاه را قبول کنی و داماد او بشوی.»

²³And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

²³ وقتی خادمان پادشاه، پیام او را به داوود رساندند، داوود به آنها گفت: «مگر داماد پادشاه شدن آسان است، من از خانوادهٔ فقیر و ناچیزی هستم.»

²⁴And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

²⁴ خادمان پادشاه رفتند و جواب داوود را به او دادند.

²⁵And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

²⁵ شائول گفت: «بروید و به داوود بگویید که من مهریه نمی‌خواهم. در عوض برای من صد قلفهٔ فلسطینیان را بیاور تا از دشمنانم انتقام گرفته شود.» هدف شائول این بود که داوود به دست فلسطینیان به قتل برسد.

²⁶And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.

²⁶ وقتی خادمان پادشاه به داوود خبر دادند، او این پیشنهاد را پسندید و موافقت کرد که داماد پادشاه بشود. پس داوود پیش از زمان معیّن،

²⁷Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

²⁷ با سپاه خود رفت و دویست فلسطینی را کشت و قلفهٔ آنها را برید. همه را تمام و کمال به پادشاه داد تا شرط او بجا آورده شود و داماد پادشاه گردد. شائول هم دختر خود میکال را به او داد.

²⁸And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.

²⁸ آنگاه شائول دانست که خداوند با داوود است و میکال هم او را بسیار دوست دارد،

²⁹And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

²⁹ پس بیشتر از گذشته از داوود می‌ترسید و دشمنی و نفرت او به داوود روزبه‌روز بیشتر می‌شد. هر زمان که سپاه فلسطینیان حمله می‌کرد، موفقیّت داوود در شکست آنها زیادتر از دیگر افسران نظامی شائول بود و به همین دلیل او بسیار معروف گردید.

³⁰Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

³⁰ هر زمان که سپاه فلسطینیان حمله می‌کرد، موفقیّت داوود در شکست آنها زیادتر از دیگر افسران نظامی شائول بود و به همین دلیل او بسیار معروف گردید.
