¹And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

¹ در آن هنگام فلسطینی‌ها سپاه خود را جمع کردند تا با اسرائیل بجنگند. اخیش به داوود گفت: «البتّه می‌دانی که تو و مردانت باید در این جنگ با ما باشید.»

²And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.

² داوود گفت: «بسیار خوب، من خادم شما هستم و شما خواهید دید که من چه خواهم کرد.» اخیش گفت: «بسیار خوب، من هم تو را محافظ همیشگی خود می‌سازم.»

³Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

³ در این زمان سموئیل مرده بود و تمام قوم اسرائیل برای او ماتم گرفته و او را در شهر خودش‌، در رامه به خاک سپرده بودند. شائول پادشاه، همهٔ فالبین‌ها و احضارکنندگان ارواح را از کشور اسرائیل بیرون کرده بود.

⁴And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

⁴ فلسطینی‌ها آمدند و در شونیم اردو زدند و شائول هم با سپاه خود در جلبوع سنگر گرفت.

⁵And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

⁵ وقتی شائول سپاه عظیم فلسطینی‌ها را دید، ترسید.

⁶And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

⁶ او از خداوند سؤال کرد که چه کند. امّا خداوند جوابش را نداد، نه در خواب به او جواب داد و نه به وسیلهٔ قرعه و نه توسط انبیا.

⁷Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

⁷ آنگاه شائول به خادمان خود گفت: «بروید زنی را که با ارواح سر و کار داشته باشد پیدا کنید، تا پیش او رفته بپرسم که چه باید بکنم.» آنها گفتند: «زنی در عین دور هست.»

⁸And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.

⁸ شائول شکل خود را تغییر داده، لباس عادی پوشید و در هنگام شب با دو نفر از افراد خود به خانهٔ آن زن رفت. از او خواهش کرده گفت: «روح شخصی را که به تو می‌گویم احضار کن و از او بپرس که من باید چه کار کنم؟»

⁹And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

⁹ زن به او گفت: «تو خوب می‌دانی که شائول تمام فالگیران و جادوگران را از اسرائیل بیرون کرده. چرا تو می‌خواهی مرا به دام بیندازی و به کشتن بدهی؟»

¹⁰And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

¹⁰ شائول گفت: «به نام خداوند قسم می‌خورم که از این بابت هیچ ضرری به تو نخواهد رسید.»

¹¹Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

¹¹ زن پرسید: «چه کسی را می‌خواهی که برایت بیاورم؟» او جواب داد: «سموئیل را.»

¹²And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.

¹² وقتی آن زن سموئیل را دید با آواز بلند فریاد زد و به شائول گفت: «برای چه مرا فریب دادی؟ تو شائول هستی.»

¹³And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

¹³ پادشاه به او گفت: «نترس. چه می‌بینی؟» زن گفت: «یک روح را می‌بینم که از زمین بیرون می‌آید.»

¹⁴And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

¹⁴ شائول پرسید: «چه شکلی دارد؟» زن جواب داد: «پیرمردی را می‌بینم که ردایی بر تن دارد.» آنگاه شائول دانست که او سموئیل است. پس رو به زمین خم شد و تعظیم کرد.

¹⁵And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

¹⁵ سموئیل به شائول گفت: «چرا آسایش مرا برهم زدی و مرا به اینجا آوردی؟» شائول گفت: «مشکل بزرگی دارم، زیرا فلسطینی‌ها به جنگ من آمده‌اند. خداوند مرا ترک کرده است و دیگر به سؤالهای من جواب نمی‌دهد. نه توسط انبیا و نه در خواب. بنابراین تو را خواستم تا به من بگویی که چه کار کنم.»

¹⁶Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

¹⁶ سموئیل گفت: «وقتی خداوند تو را ترک کرده و دشمن تو شده است، چرا از من سؤال می‌کنی؟

¹⁷And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbor, even to David:

¹⁷ خداوند همان‌طور که قبلاً به من گفته بود، عمل کرد. او پادشاهی را از تو گرفته و به همسایه‌ات، داوود داده است.

¹⁸Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

¹⁸ چون تو اوامر خداوند را اطاعت نکردی و عمالیقی‌ها و آنچه را که داشتند از بین نبردی، پس خداوند این بلا را بر سر تو آورد.

¹⁹Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

¹⁹ علاوه بر این تو و لشکر اسرائیل به دست فلسطینی‌ها سپرده می‌شوید و تو و پسرانت فردا نزد من خواهید آمد و لشکر اسرائیل بکلّی مغلوب می‌شود.»

²⁰Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

²⁰ شائول با شنیدن سخنان سموئیل ناگهان به روی زمین افتاد، زیرا بشدّت ترسید. چون تمام شب و روز چیزی نخورده بود، بسیار ضعیف شده بود.

²¹And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.

²¹ وقتی آن زن وضع پریشان شائول را دید به او گفت: «من جان خود را با انجام دادن دستورات شما به خطر انداختم.

²²Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.

²² اکنون خواهش می‌کنم که شما هم خواهش مرا بپذیرید و چیزی بُخورید تا کمی قوّت بگیرید و بتوانید بازگردی.»

²³But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.

²³ امّا شائول از خوردن خودداری کرده گفت: «من چیزی نمی‌خورم.» همراهانش نیز به او اصرار نمودند. پس شائول از زمین برخاست و روی تخت نشست.

²⁴And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:

²⁴ آن زن فوراً گوسالهٔ چاقی را که در خانه داشت، سر برید. آرد را خمیر کرده نان فطیر پخت. سپس غذا را پیش شائول و خادمانش گذاشت. آنها خوردند و برخاسته، شبانه به راه افتادند.

²⁵And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
