¹Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

¹ فلسطینی‌ها باز به جنگ اسرائیل رفتند. اسرائیلی‌ها شکست خورده، فرار کردند و عدّهٔ زیادی از آنها در کوه جلبوع کشته شدند.

²And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul's sons.

² سپس فلسطینی‌ها به تعقیب شائول رفتند و پسرانش، یوناتان، ابیناداب و ملکیشوع را به قتل رساندند.

³And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

³ و بعد به سراغ شائول رفتند و تیراندازان او را محاصره نموده او را به سختی مجروح نمودند.

⁴Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

⁴ آنگاه شائول به جوانی که سلاح او را حمل می‌کرد گفت: «شمشیرت خود را درآور و مرا بکش تا این فلسطینی‌های کافر مرا تحقیر نکنند.» امّا مرد جوان بسیار ترسیده بود و چنین نکرد. پس شائول شمشیر کشید و خود را به روی آن انداخت.

⁵And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

⁵ چون سلاح‌بردارش دید که شائول مرد، او هم شمشیر خود را کشید و بر آن افتاد و او هم مرد.

⁶So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

⁶ به این ترتیب شائول، سه پسرش و سپاهیانش در آن روز کشته شدند.

⁷And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷ اسرائیلی‌هایی که در سمت دیگر دشت یزرعیل و طرف شرق رود اردن بودند، وقتی دیدند که سپاه اسرائیل فرار کرده‌اند و شائول و پسرانش هم کشته شده‌اند، شهرهای خود را ترک کرده، گریختند. آنگاه فلسطینیان آمدند و شهرهایشان را اشغال کردند.

⁸And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

⁸ فردای آن روز که فلسطینی‌ها برای غارت اجساد کشته‌شدگان آمدند، جنازه‌های شائول و پسرانش را در کوه جلبوع یافتند.

⁹And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

⁹ سر شائول را بریدند، اسلحه‌اش را برداشتند و مژدهٔ مرگ شائول را به بتخانه‌ها و مردم خود در سراسر کشور پخش کردند.

¹⁰And they put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

¹⁰ اسلحهٔ شائول را در پرستشگاه عشتاروت قرار دادند و جسدش را بر دیوار شهر بیت‌شان آویختند.

¹¹And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;

¹¹ چون مردم یابیش جلعاد شنیدند که فلسطینیان در حق شائول چه کرده‌اند،

¹²All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

¹² دلاوران خود را به بیت‌شان فرستادند و ایشان شبانه خود را به بیت‌شان رساندند و اجساد شائول و پسرانش را از دیوار پایین آوردند و ایشان را سوزانیدند. بعد استخوانهایشان را برداشته در زیر درخت بلوط در یابیش دفن کردند و هفت روز روزه گرفتند.

¹³And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
