¹Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

¹ یورام، پسر اخاب، در هجدهمین سال سلطنت یهوشافاط پادشاه یهودا، سلطنت خود را بر اسرائیل در سامره آغاز کرد و دوازده سال حکومت کرد.

²And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.

² او آنچه را که در نظر خداوند پلید بود، بجا آورد؛ امّا نه به بدی پدر و مادرش زیرا او بت بعل را که پدرش ساخته بود، نابود کرد.

³Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

³ امّا او نیز مانند یربعام پادشاه، پسر نباط، مردم اسرائیل را به گناه کشید و از کار خود دست برنداشت.

⁴And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.

⁴ مِیشا، پادشاه موآب گوسفند پرورش می‌داد و هرسال صد هزار برّه و پشم صد هزار قوچ، به اسرائیل خراج می‌داد.

⁵But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

⁵ امّا هنگامی‌که اخاب درگذشت، پادشاه موآب علیه پادشاه اسرائیل شورش کرد.

⁶And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.

⁶ پس یورام پادشاه از سامره خارج شد و تمام لشکر خود را بسیج کرد.

⁷And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.

⁷ او برای یهوشافاط، پادشاه یهودا پیام فرستاد که پادشاه موآب علیه من شورش کرده است. آیا در نبرد علیه او به من کمک خواهی کرد؟ یهوشافاط پاسخ داد: «بله، چنین خواهم کرد، من و همهٔ مردان و اسبهای من در اختیار شما هستیم.

⁸And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.

⁸ از کدام جهت باید حمله کنیم؟» یورام پاسخ داد: «ما از راه طولانی صحرای اَدوم خواهیم رفت.»

⁹So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.

⁹ پس پادشاهان اسرائیل، اَدوم و یهودا حرکت کردند و بعد از هفت روز، آب تمام شد و هیچ آبی برای آنان و حیواناتشان باقی نمانده بود.

¹⁰And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!

¹⁰ آنگاه پادشاه اسرائیل گفت: «افسوس که خداوند این سه پادشاه را خوانده که آنها را به دست موآب بسپارد.»

¹¹But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

¹¹ یهوشافاط پادشاه پرسید: «آیا نبی‌ای هست که به واسطهٔ او از خداوند راهنمایی بخواهیم؟» یکی از افسران پادشاه اسرائیل پاسخ داد: «الیشع، پسر شافات که شاگرد ایلیا بود اینجاست.»

¹²And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

¹² یهوشافاط گفت: «او یک نبی واقعی است.» پس هرسه پادشاه نزد الیشع رفتند.

¹³And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

¹³ الیشع به پادشاه اسرائیل گفت: «من با شما کاری ندارم. نزد انبیای پدر و مادر خود بروید.» امّا پادشاه اسرائیل جواب داد: «خیر، زیرا خداوند، ما سه پادشاه را به اینجا آورد تا به دست موآبیان تسلیم کند.»

¹⁴And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

¹⁴ الیشع پاسخ داد: «به خداوند زندهٔ متعال که خدمتگزار او هستم سوگند، که اگر به‌خاطر احترام به یهوشافاط پادشاه یهودا نبود، حتّی به تو نگاه هم نمی‌کردم.

¹⁵But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.

¹⁵ اکنون نوازنده‌ای نزد من بیاورید.» هنگامی‌که نوازنده چنگ می‌نواخت قدرت خداوند بر او فرود آمد.

¹⁶And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches.

¹⁶ و او گفت: «خداوند چنین می‌گوید در همهٔ وادیهای خشک، گودالی بکَنید.

¹⁷For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

¹⁷ با وجودی که شما نه باران و نه بادی خواهید دید، این وادی پر از آب می‌شود و شما و چارپایان شما به اندازهٔ کافی آب برای آشامیدن خواهید داشت.»

¹⁸And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

¹⁸ الیشع ادامه داد و گفت: «این کار آسانی برای خداوند است، او همچنین شما را بر موآب پیروز خواهد گردانید.

¹⁹And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

¹⁹ شما همهٔ شهرهای زیبا و مستحکم آنها را تسخیر خواهید کرد، همهٔ درختان میوهٔ آنها را خواهید برید و چشمه‌های آب آنها را خشک خواهید کرد و همهٔ کشتزارهای حاصلخیز آنها را با سنگ خواهید پوشاند و نابود خواهید کرد.»

²⁰And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

²⁰ صبح روز بعد، در هنگام قربانی عادی صبحگاهی، آب از طرف اَدوم جاری شد و زمین را پوشاند.

²¹And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood in the border.

²¹ هنگامی‌که موآبیان شنیدند که پادشاهان به جنگ ایشان آمده‌اند، همهٔ کسانی را ‌که می‌توانستند اسلحه به دست بگیرند، از پیر تا جوان، جمع کرده و در مرز مستقر گشتند.

²²And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:

²² هنگامی‌که بامداد روز بعد برخاستند، خورشید بر روی آب می‌درخشید و به نظر موآبیان، آب مانند خون قرمز به نظر می‌آمد.

²³And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

²³ ایشان گفتند: «این خون است، حتماً پادشاهان با یکدیگر جنگیده‌اند و یکدیگر را کشته‌اند، برویم و اردوی آنها را تاراج کنیم.»

²⁴And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.

²⁴ امّا هنگامی‌که به اردوگاه رسیدند، اسرائیلی‌ها به ایشان حمله کردند و آنها را وادار به عقب‌نشینی کردند و موآبیان را کشتند و سپس ایشان را دنبال کردند

²⁵And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

²⁵ و شهرهای ایشان را نابود ساختند. همچنین هنگام عبور از زمین‌های حاصلخیز هر اسرائیلی سنگی در آن پرتاب می‌کرد تا تمام آن زمینها از سنگ پوشیده شد. آنها چشمه‌ها را بستند و درختان میوه‌دار را بریدند. تنها شهر پایتخت، قیرحارست باقی مانده بود و فلاخن‌اندازان آن را محاصره کردند و به آن حمله نمودند.

²⁶And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.

²⁶ هنگامی‌که پادشاه موآب فهمید که شکست خواهد خورد، هفتصد مرد شمشیرزن را با خود برد و کوشید از خط دشمن بگذرد و نزد پادشاه سوریه برود، امّا نتوانست. آنگاه او پسر نخست خود را که باید جانشین او می‌شد، گرفت و در روی دیوار شهر قربانی کرد. اسرائیلی‌ها ترسیدند و از شهر عقب‌نشینی کردند و به سرزمین خود بازگشتند.

²⁷Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

²⁷ آنگاه او پسر نخست خود را که باید جانشین او می‌شد، گرفت و در روی دیوار شهر قربانی کرد. اسرائیلی‌ها ترسیدند و از شهر عقب‌نشینی کردند و به سرزمین خود بازگشتند.
